    This is funny..every single barb wire type figure 8 knott video tutorial is an Australian fella...I love it! I like that yout just using the butt of the hammer to hold it tight

    Winding the wire around and snapping off makes a neat knot and prevents the wire snagging the other wires on the fence if they come together .
    However it does not add to the strength of the knot and the brocken end leaves bare metal without a protective coating of zinc next to the tensioned wire .If the wire is cut off either side of the knot the corrosion must eat away the stub of untensioned wire before it reaches the tensioned wire leading to a longer wire life before it fails , especially in a high corrosion environment , think near the sea.

      most wires use a galve aluminium coating that will oxide and protect the broken ends so this is a rather moot point
