Thank you! I love seeing them. I walk around everyday and can't believe what I'm seeing. I have already harvested so many seeds I could start a seed business lol but I did video part of that harvest already. Should be out soon!

Hey Leigh! 😊. I’m hoping you, Farmer John and your birds are all doing well! If not reach out. I’ve been thinking about you guys and of coarse missing your wonderful videos. You have given me such zest for gardening again! I’m doing well and waiting for the weather to be a little bit cooler. I’m looking forward to fall weather. Take care your St. Louis friend 😊

Hi Pauline I was honestly wondering how you are doing! So nice to hear from you, I'm happy you are well! It's been raining for 5 days now, ugh and it's quite chilly and raw today. It seems September just came and went, so strange. We have some footage we are putting together but I was worried it was boring. Trying to make some magic happen. Stay tuned we will be back soon! Sending a hug!

Hi Leigh - those Cosmos are so beautiful! Wow! I love the varieties! And I admire your patience in growing them. I get so frustrated with watching my asters and goldenrod - they are huge plants and they take forever to bloom, even with cutting them back!!!
I’m just going to enjoy yours for now; I’m still trying to figure out what goes where in my garden beds. Lol, I ripped out some non-native asters that didn’t attract any pollinators last season and replaced those with milkweed. I can envision cosmos behind the milkweed a few seasons from now after the milkweed is established. It’s going to take some possible trellising against a fence…and constant vigilance for poison ivy. I physically can’t do much until late October, so I’m using the time to watch UA-cam to get ideas.
I can’t wait to see your next projects and I hope you both are well. ❤
My last monarch left Tuesday - 6 boys and 9 girls for the season, but my losses were hard - three never emerged from their chrysalises and one caterpillar died before going into chrysalis. 😢 Next season I hope I’m better situated with protection against parasitic wasps and bacterial infections. I still think it was a successful year given that I only saw two monarchs visit my yard the entire summer.

Hey my friend hugs!! I'm going to miss all of these extra winged creatures this year. It's been amazing. This is my first year growing milkweed but I harvested a ton of seeds! I've never loved flowers so much. I'll miss this garden someday. I'm getting scary tired.

@@ourbackyardgarden I’m going to attribute your low energy to the summer; it demanded a great deal from you this year with all the food processing. I personally need a good cold snap to get my blood percolating…I love the freshness of fall! Maybe the first frosty morning will do wonders for you.
Yes, saying goodbye to our summer butterfly friends is tough, but we can start preparing for them now. It is great that you have harvested seeds. They have to stay out in the cold and wet of winter to germinate, or you’ll have to cold stratify them in your refrigerator/freezer. I’m direct sowing mine outside this winter. If it doesn’t work, I’ll supplement mine with those grown at the local native plant initiative…pricier, but they offer other options too.
I hope your getting rest when you can and getting your fall projects completed. Hugs!

@@ourbackyardgarden Hi Leigh - doing well and heading back to work mid-month. I thought I left a post on your September tour video! I was amazed at your tomato longevity, the zinnias, and the home you’ve created for monarchs.
I hope you’re doing well and keeping busy with projects.

Nice review of the cosmos! Never seen a double and they do look like asters. It’s now 9/14 and the seeds have appeared here in WI. They are still blooming and will capture some seeds tomorrow.
Things are winding down as we had only 40*F this morning, but will have a warm week next week. Plan on taking some propagation cuttings tomorrow of boxwood, white sage and lavender. I figure it is easier than starting from seed again. The white sage only winters in Z7 and it smells wonderful and the silver leaves looked fantastic with blue forget me nots. I’m also thinking these plants won’t be devoured by deer, but I’m not putting a bet on it😅. I prefer not to have houseplants-2 are enough-orchid and Christmas cactus-but I like saving money on those outdoor plants that do well here. I have several bulbs to winter over and we just started an experimental root cellar. I’ll put a temp monitor in it and hope for the best this winter.
The Non-stop Begonias I grew from seed are really showing off and it will freeze before too long-sigh. They require winter storage and hope they survive as they are expensive to buy and I really do enjoy them. They are like moss roses and zinnias-never know what might pop up.
I have only a couple white zinnias and they were never in the seeds saved from last year-nice surprise. The hollyhocks were only white and yellow and I just seen a red. They say the colors from seeds will be different next year, but I didn’t have only those two colors so I will probably get cream.🤷‍♀️
Thinking of things that need done before winter like washing flats, marking dahlias with what color they are, preparing area for garlic planting. Lol, I’m still harvesting and waiting for fall crops to finish. It won’t be long because north of here they had 29*F🥶
Take care, collect and mark those cosmo seeds. Do you think they cross pollinated? I wonder.
We have 7 roosters left and hope they go to a family farm soon. They want to stay by the house too much.
Oh, and a hello to farmer John-nice walkway!😃

The doubles have dozens of blooms all on 1 stem, 1 seed! Sounds lime you have a lot of varieties as well. I had a hollyhock come up, some purple magenta color, incredible. Tomorrow we split and plant daylilies farmer John will be filthy all day for his 49th bday. I'll tell him you like the walkway! I will be a bloom of flowers next year.

@@ourbackyardgarden I did try a lot of new things this year. Don’t know if I can winter them over, but hopeful. There was frost not far from here so it’s just about done. A warm week next week yet. Those cosmos are like little bright lights in the garden now. I need to take pics of a few plants as they are gorgeous just before frost.
      🥳 Happy Birthday Farmer John!
