She was very good back then and the obvious winner. But damn, she has still managed to improve a lot since then. Now she is almost always pitch perfect and not straining her voice anymore. What a difference years of experience makes!

That first year of American Idol was shortly after 9/11. We were all still in shock. Then on the TV comes this kooky show where you call to vote for your favorite contestant... great to get our minds off the bleakness of the times.. Who would have thought there'd be a girl like this? I thank God for Kelly Clarkson every day. Everyone of her performances is fabulous. Week after week, she belted it out. You could put her performances back in any season and she'd still win again. To the editor and uploader: this was a great presentation of Kelly Clarkson. I don't watch television, so when Clarkson was on American Idol while it was airing, I only knew of Clarkson by word of mouth. This video gave a great overview of Clarkson's start, and was a wonderful place to see her progression that first year.

I watched American Idol from the very beginning with my dad and mom and Kelly was my favorite from the audition and I voted every week for her over 75 times every week that my mom had to make sure I wasn't being charged to call. haha Was a fan than and been a fan for over the past 10 1/2 years!!!!!

Amazing! she deliverd on everysong!!!!! there was no bad ok good great perfomances they were all amazing! granted there were a few pitches in her voice on some of those huge notes but she didnt let it stop her so in the end it sounded amazing! i Got chills wehn she did that Mariah like note!!!!!
