Doctor John Zoidberg. Everyone’s favorite, disgusting, slimy, desperate, incompetent, package delivery company Doctor. I don’t think anybody is surprised when I use these words to Describe Zoidberg, that’s how he’s generally perceived, right? By both the audience AND his colleagues at Planet Express. But honestly, when you look past Zoidberg’s inherently pathetic qualities and peer closer into his intentions, and his actions, you might be surprised to find that Zoidberg is actually… maybe the best person on the Planet Express crew? Like, on a fundamental level, Zoidberg is actually an incredibly GOOD person, and I feel like that does not get talked about enough! So today let’s examine and challenge our perceptions of Zoidberg, and why he absolutely deserved the happy ending the show gave him.

Staning is toxic don’t do it.
@@maninthemask6275 ....not always? "Stan" hasn't meant what eminem sang about for a LONG time. Usually, most people that engage in fandom and fan content call themselves stans. Another thing I liked that isn't mentioned in the video is that while Zoidberg is shown to be an inept and incompetent doctor for most of the series, it's revealed in Tip of the Zoidberg that he's actually a very talented doctor, just not for humans.
I mean honestly that makes sense. Why would a Decopadian medical school teach mammalian medicine? When they are crustaceans?
@@LanMandragon1720 like it is not specifically stated but he is most likely very good doctor for most other alien life forms, simply human anatomy is his achilleas heel and most likely the trauma of big 4-D whale which happened with first planet express crew is the result why he never managed to study up the humans.
And yet in the end he’s able to perform a proper nose transplant on a human. Success!

Same, I was so worried that they would screw him over hard

It was the final season if they weren't even happy end then they were going to give it to him
Zoidberg went through years of ridicule just to be with Emilia Clarke. He's a real winner

Zoidberg: Switch bodies? I don't see why not. I also don't see why.
Wait there are people who hate Zoidberg???? WHY??? I'm happy he got a happy ending, brings a tear to the eye.
@Roger Conant what no father figure does to someone
@Roger Conant if you had actually watched the show and have some critical thinking skills you would know he’s not pathetic, and the only reason he’s sad is everyone hates him. But when one person doesn’t hate him he’s happy again and giving all you have to people less fortunate is anything but pathetic, also he defeated the clamp guy. He’s a strong character that is beat on but never gives up, and never loses his selfless attitude.
@Roger Conant I don’t see being noble and strong as being pathetic. I see those traits completely outweighing his depression. I see being pathetic as being a pushover and easily overpowered even by seemingly much weaker people.
@Roger Conant he evokes pity but doesnt ask for it,his qualities literally show that he isnt pathetic
@Roger Conant Alright that’s fair, so it has more than one definition. So both of our descriptions fit pathetic.
He also fought a freaking robot hitman from the mafia to protect his friends, he didn't hesitate a second to put his life on the line despite the planet express crew making him feel useless throughout the episode.
"My name ain't 'Slick.' It's Zoidberg. John F**king Zoidberg!"
He’s like Meg, but as an alien with a happy ending
You forgot the episode where Hermes almost killed his own humanity by turning into a robot, only to be saved (somehow) by Zoidberg. Even his wife urged him to thank him
"Now, Husband, don't you think you owe Zoidberg a thank-you for saving you from yourself?"
"But I hate him."
"Honey, we all do! But fair is fair."
honestly, i hate all the characters on family guy, but i hate meg a little less than the rest of them, mostly because they hate her so much, but i guess also because of that time she turned into daffy duck for about 5 seconds
One of my favorite Zoidberg moments was when we squares up with Francis in “Silence of the Clamps” to save (who he at least thought was at the time) Bender, nearly being killed from getting his head crushed before his final triumphant victory. He doesn’t even *kill* Francis either, despite being an actively murderous mafioso, opting to disarm him instead (quite literally).

I never watched Futurama until one day I stopped by my daugther's hosue and she was watching an episide. "Why does that look like a Harold Lloyd movie?" I asked. "Because it's Harold Zoid." It‘s also worthy of note how Zoidberg masterfully reassembled a human body from discarded parts (with noteworthy time gaps in between), ending with him successfully amputating a brain and just straight reassembling the person as if they never got torn apart.
With a handpuppet.
While singing
And harmonizing with himself. Don't forget that part

@@speeddemon456 Funnily enough Robot Santa's programming would STILL deem Zoidberg as 'nice' after that. Hell in subsequent X-Mas episodes Robot Santa doesn't go after Zoidberg at all.
Mom as well, because he is the only character from the main group of Planet Express, with whom she has a positive relationship.
Zoidberg is impulsive, but is a creature of intense emotion. One of my favourite moments is when he frames fry for 10 dollars worth of bottle ship, before being eaten by guilt. Of course his impulsivness gets on the way again, he still tries.
People also seem to forget that he even met Robot Santa’s standards for being genuine and nice
“You’ve all been very naughty! Except for you Dr. Zoidberg.”
@@nicholaspeters9919 the real question did his actions that day make him more or less worthy of that present?
Zoidberg was the only person in the UNIVERSE on Santa's nice list, yet he gives it up without a second thought and puts his life in danger not just for one time, but every year for the rest of his life, to protect people he calls his friends
I think Zoidberg getting a happy ending was perfect. Sometimes happy endings are cliché and boring, or even unjustified at times, but for a character who was consistently the punching bag of the show its nice to see he FINALLY got a win.
I REALLY hope that Maryanne returns for the Futurama reboot. If it's an actual continuation of the series, it would honestly be cute for Zoidberg to still have his girlfriend. Maybe she could even go on adventures with the crew.
I was literally thinking about this exact thing yesterday, Zoidberg is by far my favorite character, and I adore him, so I was so happy that he found his happy ending
Omg same here!!
Oh man, she actually has a different shaped nose at the end. That's so cool, it's a little detail they didn't have to include, but they still did!
Even when Zoidberg is being bad (aka when he breaks the professor's model ship and blames fry) it's only because he asked himself what BENDER would do.
And he even confesses at the end.
Also lying out of fear is different to lying for fun or to get away with deliberately being immoral.
both times, Zoidberg ACCIDENTALLY breaks something and lies out of fear of consequences he cannot handle - the things he broke cost money and he has none.
And we see he feels incredibly guilty for lying.
This is not someone who just does bad things for fun and lies about it
This video inspired me to rewatch many of the episodes and I realized the best description of how the show writers viewed Dr.Zoidberg was given to us in the season's 6 episode "Reincarnation". In that episode Zoidberg is the only person who can communicate with mouthless aliens through dance and thus save the planet. But he can only do so in the very end, because other team members ridicule him while trying to hero up themselves. At the end when Zoidberg saves the day he says: "I may be the humblest of team members, but I have given it my all".
NGL I absolutely loved that episode. Zoidberg gets shit on throughout the series and it filled my heart with joy to see him happy with someone.
I agree that Zoidberg deserved that happy ending. He went through a good bit of personal torment as the "Pathetic Comic Relief" but as you pointed out, he was a genuinely good person. So good in fact that even the Santa Bot was like "You all are naughty! Except you Zoidberg, here's a pogo stick,". When the malfunctioning serial killer who is supposed to deem everyone as naughty and put them on the kill list says you are nice? Then by golly you are one of the best of us all.
"I help those who help themselves!"
I love Zoidberg. He's got some of the best jokes and he's a sweet little character, I was very happy they gave him a happy ending.
Stench And Stenchability made me tear up. Zoidberg kept getting dumped on throughout the series. Through it all, he remained a nice guy...or crustacean.
It was great seeing him get the love he's always wanted.
Aww yeah, some Zoidberg love!
Also, I figured out a way that Bender's Big Score can happen without overwriting the sad moments of Fry's life.
Fry's mom having her dream still happens in the Lars timeline, but that creates a feeling in her that the Fry that came back isn't _her_ . Eventually, Fry's dad and Yancy start to get the same feeling, and that further drives Lars into being a narwhal specialist/back to the 3000s.
After all, a time paradox duplicate is always doomed! :-)
That actually makes alot of sense. Perhaps being in the past bought him some time while the doom caught up to him/concocted a way to get him back to the future before killing him.
I'm now convinced that the reason Santa gave Zoidberg a present is because he is just a genuinely good person no matter what, so good in fact that even Santa saw him as good despite his programming
One of the most non-human looking characters embraces the best human qualities
Something nice too, is that the two not-human characters (Bender and Zoidberg) had the most human qualities and arcs. As Bender got the worst human qualities possible as a means to beat a really human fear (that of being not special and not being remembered) but got into healthy friendships like Fry to actually still be alive, while Zoidberg has been bullied all of his life known througout the show (except with the first Planet Express generation), but everything he has, every chance he gets, he gives everything up for someone else's happiness or safety to then reach a point where he actually finds someone who understands him and loves him the way it is. I freaking love Futurama.
I remember being so happy for Zoidberg when I saw this episode because I knew he deserved this. Honestly, I would have been happy if this episode had been the series finale.
I always hated hermes and the gang for the hatred against Zoidberg, mainly he might be annoying but he had great moments to show himself as kinda better than the rest of em all.
I really liked the moment where Zoidberg pushed back against Hermes, which wasn't too overblown but also was justified. Was satisfying
To be fair, he is their doctor and he routinely "fixes" them so bad that they would be better off dead. He also always steals their food and squirts god knows what bodily fluids on them.
While he is a good person, he does definitely earn some of the ire he gets.
That’s how it is in most sitcoms/comedies. The main popular characters are terrible people while the actually good people are the butt of a LOT of jokes.
@@Sacredsnow2 OH MY GOD, I know right?!

After recently rewatching the show, I realised Dr. Zoidberg is my favourite character.
bruh same
Zoidberg is my favorite character in all of Futurama. He is such an underrated character that it’s ironically sad to see him severely overlooked by everyone. Speaking as someone who was born on the autistic spectrum who has always struggled with social anxiety and an inability to maintain multiple long-term relationships and understand social cues, I just relate so much to this crustacean alien, especially in his quest and longing for companionship and love. He’s just such a sweetheart and I’m glad that he finally found love. It’s not what most fans wanted, but it’s what Zoidberg deserved: someone who not only loves him, but accepts him as well.
I'm glad you did this and saw this. Something interesting I'd like to now point out to you is that the only other person that even comes close to Zoidberg in terms of being a good person is Fry; The other *actually really good person* who is constantly crapped on as a punchline. Interesting, that.
I remember when I was first watching Futurama that Zoidberg was my favorite character. I'm re-watching the show again now, and somehow didn't even realize all the good traits he has. We love a well-developed character
He was the only one to get a gift from the Santa bot
Zoidberg has always been one of my favourite characters in the show. If I were to end up in the world of Futurama on the Planet Express crew Zoidberg would be the first one I'd really try to befriend, both because he feels so lonely most of the time and because he'd be a genuinely awesome friend to have.
Zoidberg amazing feats
- Gain Mom respect
- Made Bender apologize
- Robo Santa consider him a nice person
- Has Sacrifice his happiness for his friends multiple times
- Has nothing and still gives to others
- The fact that he holds no grudge against all of his friends for all the horrible things they done to him or the way they treat him.
Ah yes Dr. John Zoidberg the best developed character outside of the main trio
Yes! Dr. Zoidburg finally gets the attention he deserves. 100% nicest character ever. So many fantastic moments, and acts of kindness. Present from Santa, it was great. I love that he got his happy ending.
Omg yes one of the sweetest episodes of Futurama that noone talks about
I love how even through out all these years, I'm still finding things about this legendary show that I never noticed before. I love this show so much!

One of my favorite Zoidberg moments was after he spent an entire episode helping Cubert, at the end he flatly admits he doesn't actually like him. It's the perfect moment of pettiness while still highlighting his interest in helping others.
One of my favourite characters of all time. So happy that they gave him a good ending :)

Zoidberg and bill from king of the hill are the people we need in our life they have a big heart ♥️

I mean... Bill is kind of a creepy asshole. He openly stalks Peggy and the few times he is given 'power,' he goes mad and cruel. If you're looking for a pure-hearted KoTH character; I'd either go Bobby or Connie.
My favorite Zoidburg moment when he fights clamps in that epic showdown
There was a hint of Zoidberg's kind nature early on, in XMas Story he is the only person Santa doesn't deem as naughty and gives him a pogo stick.
Yknow, I think that zoidbergs happy ending also is a small nod to just how strange humans can be. In that humans can truly associate the absolute most horrendous smells, with the most enjoyable experiences, and because even despite our (relative to the rest of earth animals) poor sense of smell, we still retain a large amount of scent associated memory, that because she was unable to smell zoidberg *before* she created a connection to him that she could easily associate whatever he smells like to her connection to him!
It strikes me as very similar to real humans and the variability in their enjoyment of things like durian, stinky tofu, and even eggs to some degree! The association we have with these things is strong enough to push our primitive senses to an enjoyable experience, thus removing the disgust factor.
Zoidberg has always fascinated me as a teen having found Futurama in my early teens, and now having a fresh adult perspective on the characters really makes the show that much more enjoyable
Let's not forget when Zoidberg put Hermes body back together when he started becoming a Cyborg. Despite the fact that Hermes hates him more than anyone else in the crew.
The Tip of the Zoidberg episode must have driven Zoidberg to really study human anatomy after making the crew into abominations.
I've always found Zoidberg inspiring, He keeps a positive outlook on life no matter what he's put through, He DEFINITLY deserved his happy ending.
Am i the only one who thinks zoidberg is ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE?!

There was definitely an episode or two before then when he mentioned his stink gland. I think it was even from the one where he goes to his home planet to mate. Whichever one it was, I remember him bemoaning the fact that his stench wasn't powerful enough to attract the ladies.

He's actually my favorite character in the whole show. I was so happy when he got his own episode for love in Season 10
I loved that yeti episode with Farnsworth, in part since it addressed Zoidberg's long professional relationship with Farnsworth, a connection that engendered a lot of trust between them. Farnsworth called him just "John" for possibly the first time on screen when he called in that big favor.
A few months back, I told my dad that I had never watched Futurama. I watched bits and pieces and obviously saw that notorious Fry meme, but never really watched it. I watched the first episode and as I watched the show, I began to really, really love Zoidberg. One of my favorite episodes was his and Farnsworth's past. I always thought he was just a sweet and dorky but smarter-than-he-lets-on doctor crab who deserves love.
Give Zoidberg the love.
Time traveller here to tell you this is a good vid :)
Santa's strict criteria taught us earlier about how much is he a good guy
Zoidberg is also the best part of the Roswell episode, especially his very casual nature with the military setting Lol
I actually have anosmia (lack of the sense of smell), it's not complete anosmia, I can still smell super strong odors or anything pressed into contact with my nose, but nothing else. It's one of the things my boyfriend loves about me, because he gets kinda bad gas, but I never smell it.
The comedy Central season's definitely gave him wins, hooked up with the Alien cosplayer, told Hermes off, had great hair and got back with his past (imma assume) fling, got a hug from the professor, hell mom highly respected him.
Zoidberg is such a kind character, I wish I knew him in real life.

Stench and Stenchibility might be my favorite episode
What a fabulous, crabulous day! Look at all these new friends!
I don't know if the writers intended this with Zoidberg but, the first x-mas episode kind of sets up Zoidbergs character as the best person. I see someone else mentioned the episode already, but I wanted to comment on it
I’m gonna say this Dr. Zoeidberg is actually a perfect character example of people in the real world to never underestimate anybody For there looks smell and quality because deep down they can be very good people.

@@wgrandbois I did like a few years ago when I was watching Futurama and I was like wait a minute I’ve heard this before 😂
At the tail end of a rewatch right now, I can safely say zoidberg has surprisingly shone through as the funniest character. He takes up as little space as he needs and delivers one liners that elevate episodes that fall flat otherwise. It makes me really happy to see people honoring him instead of knocking him down
This was one of Futurama's best episodes
The usually hostile/"Kill All" Santabot had/has a soft spot for Zoidberg, giving him a gift and NOT trying to kill him.
Growing up must be weird for Zoidberg and his kind. In the flashbacks we see want appears to be a smaller version of the same general body structure as his child form, but in the episode where they fall into the fountain of youth and keep getting younger and younger, he transitions backwards through several metamorphosis into forms that're practically variations on our own sealife, including a lamprey and I think a starfish(?).
Zoidberg is the true meaning of "Nice guys finish last." like, ACTUAL nice guys.
Zoidberg really deserves that heartwarming win of an episode :)
The last four episodes are all great. I was so happy Zoidberg found someone who loves him. "Game of tones" had the best ending with Fry enjoying time with his mom in her dreams at the end. And "Meanwhile..." was a great way to send the series...at least until we see these new episodes coming soon to Hulu.
You know I just finished rewatching Futurama a bit back and was wondering 'Why on earth is the second to last episode Zoidberg of all characters getting closure?' This is why thinking back on his centered ones yeah I too judged him a little harshly. good for Dr.Z
I can't understand for the life of me why anyone would hate the fact that Zoidberg got a good ending.
Zoidberg has always, and will always be my favorite Futurama character.
You should have included the clip from when we first meet robot Santa, everyone else is getting killed but he gets a pogo stick
"You can eat my dog, you can eat my truck, but you eat my flag and you're outta luck..."
What a heart warming ending! Zoidberg is a really charming character and deserves it a lot
I really love that for a character that was created to be the butt of jokes the writers of Futurama created a really wonderful and endearing character in Zoidberg.
Zoidberg is the best character in Futurama. Period. I don't think "Meanwhile" can be talked about without mentioning Zoidberg's final, happy ending. Love the channel. Love you're insights. Liked and subscribed.
Zoidbergs smell was referenced lots of times, mostly by Hermes throwaway insults, but almost all the crew have commented on his smell at least once, even the Proffessor.
Hes lucky when his love got a sence of smell
She already loved him so she naturally correlated bad smells with her live for him which makes it even sweeter
