August Allotment Garden Tour + Life Changing Announcement

  • In this month's tour I have a BIG life changing announcement to make and I still haven't come to terms with it! My dahlias are finally in bloom and they're taking over my allotment (and my home). I'll also show you around the crops that I'll be harvesting over the autumn and winter months, including the biggest vegetable I have ever grown!
Inside the polytunnel the tomatoes are having their best year yet, as are the chillies! Tempted by first ripe Jwala chilli, for some reason I thought it was a great idea at the time to eat a bit of one raw on camera. This is not something I would normally do or recommend unless you enjoy the feeling of your mouth being on fire.
What videos would you like to see over the autumn and winter months? Let me know in the comments!
    Filmed - 26th August 2018.

I'm so excited for you! Congratulations!! If your allotment is any indication they have chosen well. I am a lifelong gardener and I have done it professionally for the last 20 years. Here is my advice on working in the elements... If you possess basic common sense working in the elements is simply Mind Over Matter. People always ask me what I do on rainy days and I always reply "I get wet!" I may not always have a comfortable job but I have never come to any lasting harm and I'm rewarded with those gloriously perfect days when I get to work outside and everyone else is stuck inside!

Well Done on getting a job you really want. Try not to reach the end of your life thinking "What if?" because there are no rehearsals, we only get one run through this play so you want to give it your best shot. Chillis - I dry mine slowly in the oven, crush them up and use them in curries etc. My wife and I have found Long Joe Cayenne to give the amount of heat we like so I grow those which makes the whole thing very easy. However, you can experiment with different chilli mixes until you find a blend you like and grow accordingly next year.
    Best Wishes, Brendan.

Congrats on your new job.. having worked fair few years as a gardener some advice, I would invest in some insulated Wellington boots, decent pair of short waterproof (gortex type) boots, lots of gloves and some good waterproof trousers and jacket. Nothing worse than working in wet flower borders with no waterproofs! Lol..

Your apples on the ground got me. I struggle so hard to keep squirrels from stealing my apples; every year I do a different netting system and
fail! But the apples on the ground would be great for a bunny if you had them for their manure. Only a thought. Have fun at your new job; I know you'll do great! Take care in these Covid times.

Pinkfluffygirl1 thanks for subscribing to my channel! I’ve had my allotment for almost four years now. Before then I never had a garden to call my own, so this is where all my experience comes from! I started by growing the basics, potatoes, tomatoes and gradually added more and more foods that I like to eat as I cleared more space on my allotment. It’s only in the last year or so that I’ve been growing so many flowers as I do now!

Mónica D F heya! I like to water my plants using them. The bottle has lots of holes drilled into it so the water goes straight to the roots. This way I can measure how much I am watering and help prevent blight, a disease that thrives in warm and damp conditions.
