for those of you who do not know the meaning of this song and are curious (or for those of you who just like some fun facts):
This song was written during the Howard Administration in Australia, and during his administration Pauline Hanson got voted in as the Independent leader of Oxley based on her racist and discriminating views, she openly made a speech in parliament stating that it was unfair for white Australians to receive less benefits than Aboriginals and believed that their benefits promoted segregation against white Australians and that any politician that believed otherwise should be thrown out of parliament for promoting segregation. She even went further in the speech to state that she wanted Australia's multiculturalism abolished, fully stating that "I believe we are in danger of being swamped by Asians" and that they "do not assimilate" into Australia, further stating that "if she has the right to decide who comes into her home, then she should have the right to decide who comes into her country" and "a truly multicultural country can never be strong or united". She then even proceeds to be extremely bigoted and racist in the speech.
This speech was accepted by politicians and vilified by the majority of people, to the point that it even encouraged Bernard Fanning to write this song which he states is his first truly political song as the rest of his danced around issues but never fully were about a political issue until that speech, meaning that this song is about the racism in the government and of the anger of the people that was ignored.

This is a great song. I was the lead singer, guitarist and songwriter in my own band at the time and I wasn’t really fussed on Powderfinger. But this is a really great song, powerful but ethereal vocals, great lyrics and nice harmonies. This is my new favourite song.

I like this song but it was written because the Conservative Liberal ( I know, confusing) party had won an election in Australia. Typical lefty, bullshit. You can only be happy in that lifestyle for so long.
Once worked at a food and wine event in Pt Douglas. Folk were arseholes, flinging rubbish at us as we tried to pick up their empty glasses and clear tables of their shit. In the 'VIP' area Powderfinger had a table and were the only decent people there, respectfully clearing their table for us and thanking us for what we were doing. This video looks like that event.
There was a happy ending though. A particularly obnoxious member of staff in the VIP area demanded that we clear away boxes of empty wine bottles that were piled next to boxes of full wine bottles, so we did this. One box of empties to the bin, one box of full to the van. Was a great after-party.
The way the multi track vocals at the end get stronger and overshadow the main vocals is incredible
