Im a lease operator on the western slope of Colorado so ive only ever worked on gas wells. Your channel has taught me a lot about oil wells and how they work. Id eventually like to pump wells in texas and i think some of the things ive learned on here can help me get started. You’ve got an amazing channel and i think we all really appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experience with us.

Looking forward to the series. I'm retired from a career of programming SCADA systems in industrial process control, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and building controls. Loved it. I never did anything in oil.

Me too. Having worked with big expensive SCADA systems in the Rail industry, I'm looking forward to seeing how a small business owner build's his own SCADA, and how he chooses to utilize it. While I find all of Zach's videos very interesting, I am especially looking forward to this series.

Brilliant stuff Zach. I have 30 yrs in electronic security and controls systems, the sensors and parts are simple and cheap nowadays. What you need is a software engineer to write you a program to gather and display the data, set high low limits and alarms. Logic tables to control strategy. Essentially a Buildings Management System like Trend but that would be a pretty penny, so go ahead and make this happen as you are 95% there. You certainly have the knowledge, willpower and need to do it. If you weren’t on the other side of the Atlantic I would drop by with some parts and knowledge. All the best Zach.

That's what most UA-cam viewers attention span is. I don't have any problem with longer videos from my favorite UA-camrs especially Derek Beiri. Yea I don't also have an hour and 45 minutes to sit and watch one of his longer videos. But that's the cool thing with UA-cam can can click away and turn it off and it remembers where you were and you can come back and pick up where you left off .

I live in alaska and many places there are so little water in areas, so they dig shallow water wells. Like your high water level indicator shut off system, kind of like a circuit breaker under the hood of a car but has a timer to turn it back on with a timer. Its called a pump protector. Well companies will usually not tell you about it because they want you to drill to Texas to find water, fifty thousand dollar wells when ground water from rain or seepage from other sources which can be filtered or just plain drink it. I happen to know if your thirsty enough, you will drink your own pee to wet your thirst, you don't need to ask me how I know/LOL. Many things some think quite offensive becomes a "Hell ya, I'll drink it"!!! I just hope our tech doesn't get ahead of good sense. Love all the videos Zach... Oh by the way... those pump protectors that they sell are quite expensive.... a really hard thing for a guy low on dollars to purchase. Its simple to make but people don't stop to think on ways to make one themselves. Parts from under the hood of a old car and a timer will do the same thing.

Dude your a mechanic, machinist, oil field operator, computer programmer and electrical engineer. The later two are amazing to me. Im a lot like yourself. I do just about everything myself and try to fix everything and make something work. Were close to the same age, but i have no interest in the conouter stuff let alone the programming stuff. My ADD eont let me sit there and do something like that. To me those type skill sets rarely cross over in people. Seems they do one side or the other and often not both.
Your a super smart guy! You make interesting videos. This coming from a guy NOT from oil country eho will bever work in it but randomly came across your videos. I had a small bit of intrest but your explinations and knowledge you share have kept me here.

Your 9-5 is how you make a living
What you do after work is how you make a killing… seems pretty badass… going to be like a Ferrari oil well but going to be complicated ironing out the kinks… also going to be glorious when completed… but more electronics is going to make it more complicated and prone to faulty sensors and what not… your the man though… I dunno how your gunna run in off backup power though that task seems daunting

  • @misterbacon4933

Maybe a drone can be your pumper. Modern drones can fly with GPS and can be programmed to follow a certain route. Here in the Netherlands farmers use it to check their crops and their Cattle's. Also during watering or apply fertilizers they monitor the results. They check the heat of the plants to check how healthy the crops are on certain area's.
Yeah drones can be your pumper..😊

Hey Zach, cool project you're working. I had an idea back when you showed us the manifolds where all the pumps in the field converge. It seems alot of diagnostics can be done just studying direction and clarity of fluid coming from all these pump feeds. Maybe as supplement to your existing telemetry you could install a small camera on a look glass for each manifold feed. I believe with some scripting you can determine direction and speed of flow, and with the aid of a light source, the clarity of the solution. It would help single out problem pumps as well as being cheaper at scale if you only need one computer box per manifold. Just a random idea. I don't know of its worth any. Cheers

I look forward to the future videos. If you are planning to use the cellphone system, all of your wells need to be in range of a cell tower(3 miles or so). I did a Google search, and it appears that there are some commercial systems out there(Baker Hughes etc.). I am sure these cost 3 arms and 5 legs.

We use Siemens plc’c to do a similar task (monitoring a power station), the scripts are little more complicated, as the plc is controlling fuel transfer duty cycles, cooling tower control gear, fans etc.
We were using an Allen Bradley plc previously, old and antiquated, there are quite a few different systems out there atm, specific scada systems are quite expensive and to be honest, a waste of money for what you are trying to achieve, plc logic has so many variables

Hey Zach, looking forward to your scada setup.
I live on an off-grid property with solar panels, lithium batteries, a 500' water well, pumps, wyze cameras etc.
I'm using homeassistant and raspberry pi computers to tie the systems together and monitor various aspects.
I just love remote sensing and control.
I worked in seismic, well data management and computer systems for years at "big oil" and worked alongside the scada team.
I enjoy watching you cause I rarely went into the field... Nice to see that stuff I was databasing!

I guess you have to buy a cell phone hot spot for each site. Wyze cameras are cheap and decent enough with 'some' logic built in if you buy the premium part. But I've learned to not trust that wyze logic because their notification system is subpar as is their logic. I can't wait to see how you tied all the inputs together AND got it to send reliably. Also curious how you got contacts and switches thrown automatically. Wyze has an outdoor double plug that works great, but you have to control in the app. Good stuff, can't wait to see these fixes.

Jeez talk about the possibilities , it kinda reminds me of my mercedes sprinter. I go over a bump and it beeps at me. Someone drives up on me fast. It beeps at me. I dont slow down in time based on whatever these sensors are set at and the damn thing locks up the brakes and disables my steering. However these are all examples of a bunch of enginerds creating crap that is crap. Your application actually makes great sense. You could put that on a water main and have it shut off before theres major flood damage to a commercial building or a residence. Not sure exactly what it would measure to enable that action but .... i bet soneone could figure it out.

The city I work in uses a Scada system for the water system. Measures the water in each one of the tanks, monitors the wells. You can turn the wells on and off and put them on auto right from the system. Problem with ours is, where they put the system. They swapped our phone system over to voice over IP. Well now the dialing portion of the system won’t work. The part that will call someone if there is a problem with the system. They’ve had multiple people come out and try to fix it, no dice. That part still don’t work right 😂

I spent many years as a process engineer in the paper industry. Many times the objective was to operate a process better than the average of the 4 shift operators, hopefully all 4 the same as the best. The act of automating a process forces you to learn the process in detail, then consider the action to be taken. Often it pointed to the relative importance of each step. Frequently it exposed where the sensor needed to be improved - how do you control a temperature to plus/minus one degree when the thermocouple and the surrounding well could only measure to plus/minus three?
I look forward to your series and hope it pays you in many ways.

Can't you install a small water separator in series with your salt water poly pipe transfer line that runs to your disposal well from each location ? This way any oil in the tank will be captured and pumped into a small holding tank instead of being injected into the disposal well !
OTOH , I suppose you could install a water separator AT the disposal well that will capture all oil from all locations before it goes into the disposal well !
