This is excellent, Jerry. I think a little more graphical overlay describing a studio mixing board, then applying the same concepts to a block diagram of Hauptwerk's implementation would help. I've used many a mixing board but will have to play around more with HW to see the analogy. Now I'm going to sleep on it, and probably lather, rinse, and repeat tomorrow. ;-)

Having found your channel via BIS, and then watching this video, I have set up a small organ in an Alt Config as suggested and played around with those reverb settings. Its a revelation, and your descriptions are very easy and logical to follow - this is stuff I would never have gleaned from the HW manual.. Huge thanks!

I've been using the HW audio mixer to add surround to some of my older stereo sets, but I honestly never realised you can re-create all of the different perspectives similar to what you can now get on some of the newer sample sets. Think I'll need to start playing around and tweaking my settings, especially now we have all moved over to V7. The possibilities are endless with this amazing software!! Fantastic!! Yes indeed - especially knowing we can launch into an alternative configuration - mess around - and then "factory reset" that one and start all over - you can't break it! Your primary configuration remains safe!
What a fantastic video, Jerry! You put really a lot of work and time into it, congratulations! And congrats also for being able to move so confidently into this labyrinth! Seriously, Hauptwerk's developers should be awarded an Olympic prize for creating the most unintuitive and unfriendly reverb tool 😂 Personally, I would load HW as a plugin in a DAW such as Mainstage, send its output to three buses and load the impulse responses in Space Designer. Three minutes of work and you are done, with a graphical interface always available to increase/decrease the volume levels of the different perspectives you are using and, if you wish, even modify the impulse responses. But hopefully, as you say at the end, maybe Hautpwerk will provide a friendly graphic interface in the future as this would avoid a lot of struggles ;) And your Bach at the end... just amazing! Standing ovation!

@@jerrymartin79 it is. Even after they brought all things more together in HW 7. but still no graphic mixer :( after your video I have done experiments myself and found new amazing sound settings for some sample sets. ;)
I personally use Cantabile to run hauptwerk as a VST, this allows me to run the audio through Reverberate, and use some binaural convolution files. You can also make your own convolution files of any space you like if you have a little time and access to the space, microphones, and a good, loud PA speaker.

Wow! What I learned with this upload is how powerful Hauptwerk software really is . . . and how, even if I watched you fabulous tutorial at least 100 times more, I still probably wouldn't be able to configure an organ to get the sound I might really want to have! And that isn't because you haven't provided a good enough explanation of what to do. It's because my main problem is that (1) the terminology is a little bewildering and I can't quite get my head around it and (2) I find it extremely difficult to read any of the dialogue screens on my 15" laptop as everything is so very small and I don't even know yet how to adjust the message boxes so that I can see the words clearly enough to read them - even with my glasses on! Oh dear. I am looking forward to the 'Hauptwerk Mary Poppins' version which just has one setting to select: "perfect in every way for Graham Twist!" I know . . . there is no hope for me! My 'supercalifragilisticexpialidocious' moment is never going to happen!

One question: In the rabk voicing adjustments you change the parameters for perspective mix, I see there is also an option to change output persp 1 - 4 seperately, What is the difference?

Think of "perspective mix" as the volume control for each perspective (a master volume slider) - then within each perspective you can further fine tune amplitude, brightness, releases, etc. etc. - that's why there are so many options in the dropdown.
Now I must say Jerry this is creating some very interesting responses coming from a variety of different levels of tech minded or not quite so tech minded folk. Digital Pipes response is particularly interesting too as it offers another route but I do wonder if this extra level of equipment/software might affect or create a latency issue. However, with a name such as Digital Pipes one would hope not. I also look forward to a video demo from them too.

Thank you for this video which gives me a good start on the HW a nuts and bolts. Have you done a video which would answer this situation: I have HW7. Some pedal notes boom in the acoustic of the room. I want to turn down these notes - that’s easy BUT….I need two outputs: speakers which have the ranks adjusted and headphones/recording channel which are unadjusted. I know this can be done but I haven’t worked it out for myself yet. Thanks
Hi Andrew - sorry for my delay 😊 Did you find a solution to your issue? The simplest solution might be within your speakers/audio interface - if there is a mixer there, you can adjust things for the room, and leave the HW recording unadjusted. However, if you need to do it within hauptwerk here is what I would suggest: - use one of the primary busses for recording only - tick the box "record" for that bus and disable it elsewhere - route "perspective 2" of all ranks to that primary bus - assuming "perspeictve 1" is going to your speakers, then make your adjustments for the pedal notes (on the voicing screen) - ONLY on the perspective 1 amplitutde controls (rather than the global controls) I realize it's difficult to put into words the complexities of hauptwerk routing - does this make sense at all from your end?

They make good sense to me - HW7 (my first real encounter with HW) is very flexible and I am already enjoying what it does for the sounds of real organs - I am effectively updating a 2002 3 manual Allen. Hey Jerry…excellent tutorial and terrific playing ! I had a quick question. When I follow your steps for virtual acoustics, I think I am missing a step. When you set up the close, medium and rear bus groups with the reverbs, are you then pointing them all to the perspective 1 mixer preset, and then pointing that preset to your speakers ? I find that when I try to adjust volumes in rank panning, either nothing happens or I get no audio. Running HW6 advanced. I’ve watched this tutorial dozens of times…it is mesmerizing !

Yes indeed it is indeed crazy to navigate (I hope a better user interface comes in a future version!) - in short, yes I am using "preset 1" in the mixer... as long as the speakers are "attached" to the endpoint (in this case it's the "main/recording" master mix bus) - at the top of the crazy dialog box - you should hopefully hear something?...
@@jerrymartin79 I will have to try it tomorrow and will let you know. I get into the weeds when checking the sends for close-mid-rear. I'm assuming these are all pointed to perspective 1 prst, or does each go to the appropriate perspective 1-2-3-4 ? It would be nice if they developed a screen where you could drag and drop ranks into bus groups, then drag or link (visually) the groups to the mixers, etc). Drew Worthen posted a really good tutorial with a conceptual diagram that was very helpful...he recommends working backward from the speakers to the ranks. That seems to work for me. I definitely understand it a lot better, but it is still complicated to get to that final result !
Success ! I wound up reverting one of my alt. Configs to factory settings and went from there. I believe I was trying to adjust Perspective 1-2-3-4 instead of Perspective Mix 1-2-3-4. Sounds really good with a dry-sampled small Moller. It is 15 ranks, and similar to what I play at church…I wanted a comparable practice instrument, since playing a Skinner on HW kinda spoils the ears when I go to church and tackle our 14-rank Wicks ! 😀

I had one random question for you. The organ you show in a studio next to the grand piano to illustrate a dry organ looks like an instrument at IU in the Music Annex...

@@jerrymartin79 I will have to try it tomorrow and will let you know. I get into the weeds when checking the sends for close-mid-rear. I'm assuming these are all pointed to perspective 1 prst, or does each go to the appropriate perspective 1-2-3-4 ? It would be nice if they developed a screen where you could drag and drop ranks into bus groups, then drag or link (visually) the groups to the mixers, etc). Drew Worthen posted a really good tutorial with a conceptual diagram that was very helpful...he recommends working backward from the speakers to the ranks. That seems to work for me. I definitely understand it a lot better, but it is still complicated to get to that final result !
Success ! I wound up reverting one of my alt. Configs to factory settings and went from there. I believe I was trying to adjust Perspective 1-2-3-4 instead of Perspective Mix 1-2-3-4. Sounds really good with a dry-sampled small Moller. It is 15 ranks, and similar to what I play at church…I wanted a comparable practice instrument, since playing a Skinner on HW kinda spoils the ears when I go to church and tackle our 14-rank Wicks ! 😀

I honestly didn’t understand the half of what’s in the video (sorry… bit I watched it all the way through) however, when I do decide to have it on my organ, I can always come back. Is this what involves when you actuality hook it up? Feeling a little overwhelmed 😅

I should do another one with "how to set up HW the first time" - it is really easy and reliable. All of this nonsense is completely optional - but good to know it's there - *so* much opportunity to play around and get ones hands dirty!

I had one random question for you. The organ you show in a studio next to the grand piano to illustrate a dry organ looks like an instrument at IU in the Music Annex...
