Few game guides are more doomed than that of an MMORPG. Ever changing and evolving, they're often out of date before they're even in the players hands. Unfortunately that wasn't the only issue with the official Brady Games Guide for Final Fantasy XI....so lets take a look at how they handled Bard!

Galka brd/whm after a wipe: "Sorry guys, I don't have enough MP for Raise...."
Logged in just to say that I was a BRD/WHM back in the 2004 PS2 days and I would always be the one to create a party, alongside my static BFF WHM/BLM. And as you might have guessed, creating parties did not take long at all as we were likely the most desired jobs for leveling (went from 18-50 like that). Then real life stuff took over, but, MAN, what a summer that was. ❤️
God the Brady Games Guide was so fking awesome. Read that thing cover-to-cover like crazy given how cryptic Vana'diel was at NA launch!! This series is genius, thanks mate!

Great guide! Would love to see a one-off vid covering the all-time great pieces of gear and why they were cool/well known. Haub, K-club, etc.
God, getting my Yinyang Robe was a ...... chore. But getting that sweet sweet "+1 Auto Refresh" on my SMN was my personal height of FFXI accomplishments (that's not saying much lol)

The only criticism I could add to that Guide would be explaining that multiple tiers of the same song stack (Mage's Ballad I & II to get the overall +3 MP Refresh). Once I got MB II, I never put down the +MND or +INT songs. It was double Ballad for the mages the whole way

I appreciate your videos. I just started ffxi yesterday and today I reached 30. With trusts, bard might be perfect for me. I’ve been a sword and board war up until now and getting tired of not being terribly useful in my ai group.

I never played BRD...and as a PLD I almost NEVER had one in a party. However, when I was on my Warrior (meriting....god did I love playing Warrior DD with Great Axe or Twin Axes...) or on my Thief, I absolutely LOVED having one in the party. Later when I was tooling around on DRG and leveling SAM to 37 for a subjob or WHM this was something that I absolutely adored to have in the party. Having a BRD and a DNC in your party after WoTG with a RDM for heals / refresh meant endless EXP / Merit Points on any job. It meant my PLD could easily hold hate while NEVER worrying about dying and the DDs killing things in under 15 seconds.
ya BRD and PLD was an interesting combo, because it could still be beneficial, but was a little more work because of trying to sneak in that Ballad
@@Huntin4GamesChannel That was the beauty of the RDM. I didn't need to get ballad (granted, I used my Parade Gorget, and would use my Ares' Harness unless it was macroed out for an ability), and could instead get other assist songs.
Otherwise, I'd just arrange myself so he could Ballad me whenever he did it on the mages. Also, for Al'Taieu organ farming, BRD/WHM and THF/NIN was the ultimate farming combo...we were even duoing that Z'dei Jailer and the MNK Ix'Aern NMs while farming up gragh chips for money (how we each afforded all that Salvage Armor...we both had full Ares', Skadi, and Marduk's sets).^^
The best thing about playing Bard is there's always a Bard in your party.
OMG i still have that FFXI guide from when I played almost 16 years ago lol memories...
I was an Elvaan Bard, and it was my first 75, probably because of the whole trying to find a party thing was annoying. I remember getting party invites while I was standing around chatting with LS or looking at AH or w/e else. If you weren't in a party you could randomly get invites, but yeah it was rare to be looking for party long. For me the thing I least liked about it was having to level white mage up to 37. Anyways that's some of my perspective. Like you said, I think they summed up bard pretty well.
ya it wasn't until I was reading the guide that I realized I couldn't remember a single Elvaan BRD from my travels haha
BRD is one of the weirdest memories of my entire time on XI. Weird in that I'm 99% sure it was 75, and 99% sure that I have memories meriting in C.Mire with it (being the puller, of course), but cannot for the life of me remember anything outside of that. Where did I get gear for it? Was I just using AF? All of my other 75 jobs were DDs, so I wouldn't have had any gear to share among other jobs. I've never been able to explain this weird gap in my memory. Did getting to 75 go by THAT fast (because of instant party invites) that it just completely disappeared from my brain?
It's amazing how similar yet different the Bard is in FFXI vs Everquest around the same era. Twisting together songs to best support yourself and your party. But Bard in EQ was an incredible soloer since they could kite large amounts of mobs, outrun them, and deal aoe damage, all with songs.

One thing I must say is you can tell what jobs the people writing this guide leveled and which they got to say only like 10 or so. Now comes my time to shine being a career bard back in the day. Yes if you didn’t have an instrument equipped you can only do one song may have been changed they also had a JA that might have been from merits or just a high level like 60+ don’t fully remember that took a song from aoe to single target so what I would do is norm acc/att for melee > JA range acc for ranger then move to mages and ballad. You are right on Eden more people do support thinking they will get more party but because of that dds and tanks tend to be what people need more. I feel like bard was in a weird place no one know what chr did for it we where just told by the jp to use it so we ended up using the AF a ton which the AF was good because it raised the skills which most people didn’t know what that did either. I do remember though that back in day I complained brd needed like nothing from sky all the good gear was crafted such as the gear introduced in toua or AF but knowing now you can get some items from sky that had haste like byakko hadati or how ever it’s spelled

I was this many years old when I learned THF/BRD in Dynamis could land TH with a song.
I usually preferred a RDM once you got over 40, when they got refresh. Haste, refresh, and debuffs could keep a party moving. They also made decent backup healers and nukers. Before 40 though RDM couldn't hold a candle to BRD.
If you had a good tank, rdm and brd was all the support you needed!
BRD really picks it up after 55, but there's a gap from 40-55 that they struggle
LMAO! In retail I never touched Bard, I actually never unlocked it. Now I'm trying it for the first time after all these years in a private server and this vid pops up. Perfect timing my friend. Now lets see what brady games has to offer lol.
How are you enjoying it so far? Its pretty boring and slow at low levels but once you get all your good songs and can pull it can be a lot of fun.

@hunter enjoyed this video! Yes, without instruments bard main and sub job only have access to two songs. Sub job has that unforgettable sound of singing. BRD main can use their 1 hour Clarion Call for an added song. There are a few instruments that can give up to two additional songs.

Oh man...Bard was my main back on FF11 and was a blast. I always rocked brd/whm and often teamed up with a /nin bard for merit parties. It was nuts. It's interesting they mentioned sub job options considering it was literally just those two 99% of the time. As far as race goes, anyone could play a bard well conidering you had to focus on chr almost entirely early on and even in end game, any race was still good. Not to mention gear was pretty cheap outside of a those nice items like a monster signa, but even without one, the job still made leveling a breeze. The fact that brd was pure support was what I loved about it. Nothing like it has really been done since.
That is indeed correct. Only BRDs can equip instruments allowing 2 songs to be played. If not, the character sings the song without an instrument but can only sing one. This is helpful in early COR leveling when COR/BRD is the best combo for 2 rolls and 1 song. As a Galka for 16 years I can still hear the terrible Galkan Singing voice whenever I would sub BRD just for extra invites.
COR/BRD is really nice.

I play an elvaan bard on nasomi and wings - love it. I use both foe and horde lullaby to interupt monster tp moves. I have used fantasia but not sure of it's effectiveness. I actually play thfbrd and brdthf. It's a lot of fun! Providing madrigal and March and ballad to a party with bard sub is welcomed too. On any melee job. I also make my own parties sometimes lasting over 10 hours 🤠
2 things missing:
+ the String/Wing Instruments and how the Magic Acc and Song Radius change.
+ Lullaby was the only Light sleep spell until Repose
Light shot from corsair was out years before Repose made its debut.
I remember back in the day I was lvling pld in the 50's and we had a Rdm/Brd that kept up refresh and mage ballad. We could chain pull forever.
Ahh Bard... the one job i leveled from 24-99 on retail just out of sheer boredom. Lol

I didn't discover being an Elvaan Bard until Abyssea. Started back in `04 as a Paladin.
Love bards. It’s nice to have a non magical support class that is such a force multiplier.

I remember doing brd before people found they can be pullers. I did brd/whm to 75! Also I was an elv and made my own pt. Roommate was my static nin and we would pick what melee we needed for the mobs we where going to exp on.
BRD pulling was a crazy era, they were so busy for sure.

Bard is actually my next target for level and Skill capping. The way I have chosen the order to level is dictated by the assumption that I start off with max skills for the jobs I have leveled... and max out all skills in each next job. That said, the current order is BRD, NIN, GEO. I will not be able to get the third one until I unlock it, and I have no intention of doing so until I finish WoTG.
It’s funny because on eden, bard is my highest level job and the first one i have super high leveled. I did my due diligence and got all 3 subs leveled for it (yes including thief). The funniest part though is half the time I’d be doing missions if get party invites. Even after /anon-ing id get invites because people in my ls would suggest me bringing bard.

I was watching one of your videos while was getting ready for bed and then had a dream where you decided to stop making ffxi videos, I woke up legitimately upset until I realized the world was still normal and you were still making videos. Crisis averted.
You have a later version of the Brady guide than I do, mine caps out at level 50. The text appears unchanged though.
I had Lv 75 Brd and I would like to make my own exp party’s then I would pick who I want it for example if you would pick all duel welding jobs then I will cast accuracy and strength songs if I did a party with single weapons then I would cast double haste songs
To this day, across multiple characters, my brd has never gone beyond lvl 1 lol. Odd given the similarities to my favorite job whm.
WHM has a little more action I feel though, because of its "reactive" nature
I never even considered bard. Thinking back on it, I'd probably enjoy it

Corsair is definitely more fun. But its expensive to play at its peak performance with consumables, where as Bard is pretty cheap to gear and songs are free.
@@Rem694u2 agreed! I leveled up to be able to make iron or steel bullets and crit craft then so I could run some endgame as corsair. Shooting bullets for tp was like shooting Gil

I had a buddy that would BRD/SCH and be our bootleg healer if no one could heal

I was an Elvvan Bard. Started as a Pld but the job was made irrelevant when the ninja tank hit. My leveling trio was a ninja, a whm, and me so we just needed some DPS and we were good to go. Didn't spend much time lfg.
I used to put in my search comment as a bard "Naked Bard. No gear and only 1 instrument. Do you need it?" Didn't matter. I still got invites out the ass lol.
My buddy was a Taru BRD. He had to go anon because he'd get invites non-stop.
He also hated playing BRD LOL. He wanted to switch to RDM.
I think madrigal's accuracy pretty much negates any blindness other than flash, but flash doesn't last long, so shining fantasia is useless. Lol. I always got tells just sitting on bard to party, without being flagged. Lol.

lol my favorite part of this game now vs back in the day is with trust I can get on a whm/ninja duel hammers and level up like I'm not going to use whm in endgame but I just like the idea of using the more offensive spells like holly.
Brd could actually solo fairly decently if you knew what you were doing. Paeons could provide surprising survivability (often used when soloing Maat), combined with Elegy and Lullaby and the amount of great armor they could wear. Once you get /nin, that could improve their solo power even more while providing more offense. Obviously, it was more effective to group up (when is it not though??), but the idea that Brd was terrible for solo was a large misconception.
It always felt like Brady Games wrote their guide as if FFXI could be influenced by actual role-play, like by saying Mithra can dodge more, with such implied confidence and surety in their words.

As a Taru, any time I actually evaded a hit, I just died from the paralyzing shock of the fact that I actually, finally evaded a hit.
as far as damange... I had a 4 song bard who subbed cor and his savage blade damage wasn't too far off of the average DD, when I played recently.
ya 119 updates have changed the game a lot with BRD
I loved playing brd I started ffxi to just play rdm but I enjoyed brd so much more

I think the Brady guide gets a really bad wrap but its pretty useful and accurate for the time.
They say the exact same thing for every job about race selection even if it is not relevant to the job: Galka highest HP and VIT and good STR, Elvaan highest STR and good HP/VIT, Hume average at everything, Mithra highest DEX/AGI, Tarutaru highest MP and INT and good AGI.
What the brady games guide did right was enhancing the allure of the game. I would just stare at the images and re/read every paragraph while the game spent 8hrs+ downloading an update

But got the highest chain of xp ever before books..
Took me til dunes to realize you needed an instrument to have 2 songs
I never had to make a pt as bard. I often had to go /anon due to 10 people asking me to pt without my flag up per hour.
BRD sub WHM with astrals
bard was rough in the early levels. from 37-41 there was a sweet spot, but 41-55 was pretty much ignore city. after 55, it's gg and everyone wants you to touch their flute.
If only I had stuck with BRD or WHM... but no, I went for Blue Mage and rusted away in the early 50s, never getting invited to anything. How foolish of me
ya I think a lot of players went this route. It can be a demoralizing game when you just can't seem to get parties and make progress, I took a break around the same time.
@@Huntin4GamesChannel I hear that being the tip for a lot of players: reach end game with a boring healer/support job. The thing is.... over the years I found out that I actually prefer to play as such a job! So that makes that FF11 experience even more painful, cause it really didn't have to be this way

Most of bards songs never get sung, they are mostly extremely situational or outright useless when compared to other songs. Madrigal, Minuet, March, Elegy, Ballad and Lullaby are basically all you need as long as you have decent gear. Therenodies are pretty useless. COR shots and rolls were way more effective at lowering resistances for mages. The AoE Reraise song Goddesses Hymnus is pretty cool too if you are about to wipe and need to OH SHIT reraise your party, but you will rarely ever use it. I guess Mambo had some uses too for Ninja and Thief tanking certain NMs too, but like I said very situational. Paeon can offer some shitty healing in down time, but a good party with a Bard shouldn't have downtime, or at least not enough of it for Paeon to matter, it's never saved a party members life in my experience. You are better off leaving buffs on and killing faster so people take less damage over time.
Oh I forgot Prelude. That can be kinda useful "IF" you have extra time to cast it on your RNG's or COR's to increase their Sidewinder and Slug Shot accuracy. Which normally I do not if I am going to keep a pull chain going full time.

Once you go bard you never go back... because once you become a bard bitch your ls will never let you go anything else. Bonus you’ll never have to roll on gear because they’ll give you that shit for free to truly make sure you’ll always go bard.

People gives these guides way too much flak. I think the Bradygames guides are a fantastic primer for first time FFXI classic players.
