I had the same thing happen to me. The lower connecting rod bearing went out on my 2008 crf250r. Metal shavings were all up in my oil filter..... I ended up buying the whole video from him. I highly recommend it. I know it sucks paying for a video, but think about it in comparison to the cost of a full rebuild. The money you spend by buying his video to do the rebuild yourself saves you 10x+ over in the money you would have spent by paying a mechanic to do it for you. His video goes over everything in depth. I am forever thankful for content like this on the internet. Thank you, Matthew!!!
How and where and how much to you buy the rest of the repair video?
Can I buy a video to this on my 2015 CRF250r, I’m very handy have all torque wrench, special tools to get the job done I just get nervous taking engines apart.
This was a good quality video to. Hard to find videos like this. Hope you finish this series some day.
Happened to my 06' just a seized crank. I used this video to rebuild my bike and it ran strong until 20hrs later. Lol. Just needed new top end. But up and running now. I have to thank you a lot for this portion of the video. Really useful and rebuilt my whole engine in 1 night.
learn a pile from this guy (pro) didn't realize how professional he really was at first and made a fool of myself. thanks Matt for your kind words way back when!
Hey Matthew! I just wanted to thank you for making this great video. I’m 17 and I got ripped off on Craigslist because I honestly didn’t know what to look for. I no one in my family rides anymore but after saving up I was able to get back into the sport. After watching this part I had to get the full version. Without this video I wouldn’t be back on the track and trails. Very easy to follow! Thanks a lot!
Julian, thanks for the feedback. Glad you were able to do it yourself and save some money!
that was it, I was on a phone thank you. I used these videos to do my first rebuild and it lasted 2 years at almost 500 hours great videos
I’m on the fence about splitting the case on my 04 crf 250 but after watching this and how detailed you are has given me a little more confidence.
Sorry to hear about the motor. Good work so far. Keep it up!
Wow looks like a ridiculous amount of work and knowledge needed to complete a rebuild. Was looking at at 250 4-stroke for summer, i may be interested in a 2-stroke now.
Thank you, sir! I m looking to buy this model and the taredown really helped me understand the ins and outs of the bike.Such a shame there s no followup.
Why didnt you continiue the series? Would have wanted to see more😂
@@taylorschmuhl387 how did you get here if you don’t like four strokes
Because he lures you into dismantling your engine to then find after the first episode you have to pay for the rest of the videos with no mention of the fact in the first video😂 con artist
you are a lot of peoples heros right now haha. thank you for the upload
hey Matt, im the girlfriend with the 2005 crf250r. Great video very imformative. The cam follower cup exploded. so i need a top end for sure. probably a crank and piston. Im cleaning parts and then going to assess the damage. thanks again for the video. Cant wait to follow you through the next one.
Heather
Matt, you are doing a great job with these videos. The tutorial and camera work are among the best on youtube. I use an impact on low settings for 8-10mm bolts, and have never had a problem.
Hey Mike, thanks for the compliments! Speaking of cameras, look out for a video soon on new equipment I bought.
Yes, low setting is key. The 3/8 gun you see in the vid is also super weak.
Impact wrenches are great i love the sound aswel if you have a good compressor with a adjustable impact makes this job very quick and easy without needing hand tools
Layshaft? Are you refering to the crank bearings? If so, yes it's not ideal to bang them in. I have access to a press, however wanted to show a method everyone can use. The important part is that the load goes to outer race.
Impact is a central pneumatic i bought 15yrs ago. I would buy a IR 231 if I were to do it over again. The CP is a bit weaker.
The impact has a dial to reduce torque, but I would always follow up with torque wrench on critical items.
Good question. I have no idea. I don't know the history of this bike from 0-15hr, who knows how it was ridden or maintained. Seems like quite of few people have had the same issue. My advice: change oil & check level frequently, inspect clearances, and keep the air filter clean!
you are the best keep it up this video really helped my cousine out same bike same problem thanks man
Nice video, always fun doing some work in the garage with the noise of rain.
great tutorial, the shavings would be as you stated, the thrust washers and bearing. a tip for you, have some rubber bands on the bench. I put them over the trans gears from end to end to hold everything together, saves some headaches and lost thrust washers.
James, thanks for the tip on the rubber bands. I might be splitting cases on a KX250F soon, so I'll make sure to have some rubber bands handy.
Not necessarily. This vid was on a 07' model with 15hrs on it when crank blew. It was just purchased. Hondas are usually known for their reliability. The YZF's are also really reliable.
Im about to rebuild my 08 crf250r step by step using these vids. Wish me luck!
How did you get on lol? 5 years later. My crf250r just blew up today I'm gutted! Thinking about Doing it myself
Sounds like a head gasket to me. To be 100% sure, perform a leak down test and look into the radiator for air bubbles. I have a vid on "DIY leak down". If the gasket is bad, tape sandpaper to a piece of glass and work the head in a figure 8 to see if it is warped or not sealing properly.
Took me 12 hours. It took me 2hrs to pull motor out. Go to vid description and click on blog post for more info.
No, I can't say that I have yet. Are you sure the brake lever/pedal is not in the way? Start soaking it in penetrating oil.
Does the swingarm rotate freely?
Part 1 of 1....
Awesome vids! Thanx for posting, I am doing my 450 soon and this really helped !!
WOW, really cool Matt! Thanks for taking the time to make such a detailed video. I have a 2007 CRF 250X that developed a "metal-on-metal" chirp, chirp, chirp PING! That was the end of the ride. I havent opened her up yet, but I'm guessing she ate a valve...though I'm not sure why. So, I'm going to rebuild her - with your help. I am curious why your 250 seized that main bearing. Thanks, again!
No problem!
I'm not sure why the rod bearing failed, but google shavings in oil and you'll see that this model has had a ton of them fail.
Let me know how it goes with the rebuild. The X should be pretty similar to the R.
MatthewMCRepair will do. I'll do some research on that main bearing, as well, and let you know what I learn.
Mathew Mc excellent video thanx for posting . my girlfriends 05 crf 250 seized today . no oil ! so may have some additional damage . this is such a great video for reference I can blow it apart , and use your vids for reassembly . provided its not cost prohibitive . i really don't get it she always takes the time to lube a chain that is wore out , and only costs what 150 for a set . it takes less effort to check oil to preserve the engine !
John, under vid in description section, click on the blog post link. It should answer all of your questions :)
That end of the crank will protrude into the LH cover when assembled. The cover has a seal in it as well. All this will force oil through the passage in the crank. If your crank end is damaged, see if you can repair or worse case replace the crank. If the damaged end ruins that seal in cover, the motor will starve of oil.
If you buy 2,3,4 part of the video will that show any info on the valves or is that a different video?
No. Valve removal is not shown in video. If you need a valve job, you need to farm that out to a machine shop like fastheads etc...
The Hondas are known for blowing cranks. Buy 06' or newer. If considering YZF, go 07' or newer. They had a recall on valves in 06'.
Hey Mike. Sorry to hear about the motor. Did the engine oil migrate to gearbox? Do a search on oil migration, pretty common problem also.
This helped for sure but a lot of parts to remember where they go back, but after a couple tear downs should get easier..thanks man
I ended up buying a 01' KX250 for 1100. I ride once a month if that. I do like the power delivery on the 4 strokes though.
Mitch, in vid description, there is a link to a a blog post with service manual dowload and parts cost breakdown. Good luck.
Where is 2, 3 and 4, really wanted to see them! Loved this video. Watched the whole thing.

Will the full rebuilt for the valves be included in this purchase video?
Am getting ready to do my 04 crf250r valves but everything is taking off that's how I got it.
@@jayalo7882 Head dissasembly is not included. How are you doing the valves yourself? You need a machine shop to do the valve job for you.
I just got a crf 250r, I'm 6' 230lbs and it absolutely rips with me on it. I started riding on a z50 and stopped at a CR250 at 16....26 years ago. Today's 4 strokes fu*kin ripp! Back in the day if you rode a 4 stroke you'd lose some stripes and get clowned on. Not anymore. I do still love 2 strokes.
@@HTMR A quantum leap my friend. Unfortunately I live in the Pacific northwest and haven't had good riding weather so I have a grand total of 30 minutes on my bike. I'm a woods rider but I need to make sure my suspension geometry is right, so I'm gonna hit the local track in the spring and bring some tools. Any advice for me?
In your situation, it might be cheaper to buy a used motor. What did your mechanic quote you versus what used motors are going for?
Put bike on stand with rear wheel in air. You'll have to lift rear wheel a bit to release pressure off bolt. You can use a drift punch to knock it out, it may be rusted in.
Thanks Bob!
I'm 5'10" or 5'11" & 170lbs and am flat footed when sitting on the bike. You should touch the ground no problem. If the bike is a bit too tall for you, maybe a lowering link or shorter seat will do the trick.
The service manual covers both. I would compare PN's with online parts diagrams.
Never have done that job on that model, however will be similar in difficulty as the CRF.
Wayne, I have a case splitter. I've demonstrated that you do not need to buy that tool for this motor. I would never hit a good crank with a hammer. The old crank is junk.
Bill, the shavings were gold/brass colored.
I'm sorry to hear that. Make sure you check out the blog post for more info.
Do you have any valve check/adjustment videos? Do you think a bad valve or shim could be the reason my bike is a PITA to start?
So I’ve been building a kx250f for a few years I bought a frame new cases and so on and etc and as time passed I missed riding so I thought let me not rush the Kawasaki build because it is my pride and joy a lot of unobtanium on it that I scored on auctions over the years and want to take my time building it ....so I buy a used 2014 crf250r and the bottom end locked up 20 mins into my ride ....my buddy had to ride back pick up my van just an overall nightmare and I should know better we all think it won’t happen and I’ve got lucky a couple times but it ran out so I’m dropping it off Tomorrow to have it redone by a local shop because I do not have the space to do 2 at once it would be awesome to have a double paddock type of setup but hey we can dream....what I’m telling you is ....don’t give up ....keep pushing even when everything is going against you push harder and you will overcome
Where is part 2-3-4 of the rebuild?! I started with your video and am stuck with what to do next, I’ll check the full video link, thanks bro👌🏻
Holy cow the same thing happened to my CRF 250, I was going rebuild the top end but seeing the metal shavings indicates I will have to split my case too.
I don't have much experience with big bore kits for this model. Your best bet is to get feedback on thumpertalk forum.
Labor costs vary, so call around and ask for quotes. They should be able to give you a ballpark over phone.
Try cleaning the hot start plunger at the carb, sometimes they get really dirty. Also, try adjusting your pilot fuel screw. It sounds lean to me.
If all that fails, check for vacuum leaks and clean the carb.
Hi Matthew, firstly I just want to say thanks for uploading such a well explained, clear and informative video. I i didn't have this video i probably would have made costly mistakes when rebuilding my 2007 crf250r, or never had attempted to do it, or pay someone else to do it. This video has no doubt saved me $1000's.
My question is about the installation of the 'idler gear' at 1.48.15
Is there any way round it should go? one side is slightly deeper than the other and the teeth dont end up perfectly flush. How is it fixed? it kind of seems loose even when clutch basket is torqued down.
Thanks Matt
Dave
+David Cannan David, thanks for the compliments. Glad it is saving you some cash. That gear should be able to go on one way only. Check out 1:57:09. I was able to wiggle it a bit.
I only say thanks for the video its healt me a lot I just rebuild my entire engine now I just wait for me gasket
Honestly, I haven't worked on those model years. It will be close.
Current owner bought the bike this past summer with 15hr. I don't think you can claim warranty 5yrs after purchasing a bike. Search the web for "CRF metal shavings in oil filter". Seems like a common problem. These bikes should be ridden hard, that is what they are for.
I have a 2007 CRF250 that needs a crank and piston. Cylinder has some scoring and I'm trying to determine if it can be honed or not does this cylinder on a 2007 have the nikasil plating?
Yes it is plated. You can email me a pic. You would need a shop to hone it or send it out for replate. New cylinder is almost same cost as replating from what I remember.
@@HTMR I was told by a Honda mechanic that the nikasil cylinder couldn't be honed? Is this true? I'm guessing not since you just mentioned it could be honed 🤷🏼♂️
@@FREEDOMSYNDICATEOFFICIAL You can, but need a diamond hone. Most shops will not have this. If you can feel scoring with fingernail, time for a replate.
Awesome video about to rebuild my 2006 crf250r with the exact same problem this bike ran in to. Well worth the money to save a thousand in labor at my local shop that charges $95/hour.
Thanks Casey! Good luck on the rebuild and let me know of you have any questions.
MatthewMCRepair pulled the engine today, and i dont have any movement in the chain at all. What could this indicate? Also, im not able to get that first rod out that you pulled out the side. Any tricks? Thanks a lot
I think that 2 strokes can be pretty reliable when tuned properly.
You showed the l/h side dis assembly before the r/h side, was that an editing glitch?
Good question. The only real way to find out is to call them. Price will vary by region due to labor rate. A rough estimate would be 8-12hrs @$50-75 an hour. Don't hold me accountable for those numbers...LOL.
True. I prefer metric over SAE.
Matt I have question I'm hoping you can answer. I'm rebuilding a 05 crf250x and I'm not sure about something. When I stab the Tranny shafts through I'm left with a small amount of play
i got a tip also, you don't have to do this but just a warning, when you bang you're hand on the spanner don't use you're palm as you can damage nerves. so close you hand and then use the area below your pinky finger. thanks good vid.
Single cam? Thought all newer bikes had two. Good video Btw. Watched the whole thing
U guys missed out he had video 1-4 on youtube for free over the summer
Have you ever had a crf blow a head gasket? I have a 2007 with very high hours and i just recently had the problem you fixed on this video. I replaced the crank, bearings, rod, piston, valves and all the gaskets. Then about ten hours of riding after the rebuild my bike is consuming coolant and blowing white smoke. What do you think it is?
I'm not sure. Take the engine covers off and see if it reveals any damage. Let me know.
Thanks! I thought 4 strokes in general are supposed to be more reliable???? It seems they are no more reliable than 2 strokes and require more maintenance.
If there is crud in there, yes. This bikes radiator is clean.
Ok thanks a lot for the info... so if I buy a 06 or newer Honda the crank will have a longer life? And thanks for the info on the yzf. And one more thing... is the Honda known for good reliability?
This bike still has the factory rev limiter. Not sure how it was maintained the first 15hr of it's life before it was purchased by the current owner.
Seems like it's a common problem with this model.
honda mx, the videos would be yours forever with unlimited views.
+Tacitcal GamerHD I have the will to learn. I did work at 2 shops in my teens, however for the most part self taught. I read tons of service manuals. All my bikes have been old clunkers and I had to learn how to fix them.
I have a 2005 crf250r and the same thing that happened to the bike that your fixing, happened to me. I'm thinking since the bottom end is "done" im gonna put a Hot Rods bottom end kit into it, a Athena big bore kit, that will bump the cc's to 280, and also put hot cams in it. I was wondering what you think? and also how much in labor costs it should cost. any help would be much appreciated!! by the way these videos are great, even though I am not mechanically inclind
Matt - have you ever scene the oil journal in the center case above the crank - break the mounting bracket? I found the steel journal still inside the cast nipple with the broken half of the bracket, laying in the bottom of the crank.
I'm having a hard time visualizing what you described. Can you email me a pic? matthew at howtomotorcyclerepair dot com
I have some brass shaveings in my crf250r but there isn’t nearly as much as that bike had do you think that it is still ok to ride
yah that's what I thought... I have three friends that like their Hondas but all three of my friends Hondas motors seized and blew their cranks... now the lucky guy got 120 hours out of his... the other guy 50 and the other 25 so I think id be best with going with Yamaha.. thanks for the help oh and are the kawis good?
im sorry but this is the last question?on the roller part on the rocker it feels like the bearing went out, because it feels bumpy and loose when you spin it and i want to know if that would cause the motor to lock up. i also noticed that the camshaft had damaged on one lobe. nothing else looks damaged no bearings look like its been siezed do you think it would be the crank HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU
Great video! I'm hoping much of this will relate to the CRF150R ... it looks similar. Did you make a video on the rebuilding and reassembly? If not I can probably figure it out, but my bike failed much like yours where it just locked up and the kick starter wouldn't kick it anymore. I'm hoping I can get the timing set right, that's the only thing that tweeks my mind. Thanks.
Happened to me on a Beta 450 RR. I had to get the frame on a workshop 20 ton press and press it out. It was rusted and seized. Don't get me wrong i didn't use all 20tons of force but it needed a few.
hey man I am debating on the kx250f and the crf250r... which bike would be the most reliable and is it just me or are Hondas known for locking up?
hey thanks for posting this. my son and i have a 2005 CRF250R that needs a top end and bottom end and now looks like a new clutch as well and i'm wondering if you think it might be better to sell off for parts or if you think its still worth rebuilding. We traded a busted quad to get this bike so we've put approx $1800 Canadian dollars into it and the price tag for all the new parts is getting close to $3600. I know the bike isn't worth that much money if we were to buy it in working condition but i think it would be something we could work on together and ride it for years to come as long as we maintained it. What do you think?
I think everyone should rebuild a bike at least once in their lifetime. The learning experience, especially if your son watches you, will be priceless.
Would this be any differnt on a 2013/2014 CRF250r?
I've got a YZ85, with something going on in the gearbox.. If i put it in first gear, it just jumps out of the gear after some secounds. The earlier owner said it was something with a spring in the gearbox. Do you know if its hard to fix? And, i hope it is something the same as this gearbox, then i can just watch this video under the rebuild!:) Thanks!
Hi. If i damaged a bit the end of the crank rod, what you mention at 24:10, copper on the end is a bit flattened, but not much, should I replace the whole rod, or just try to polish it.
Thanks,
How and where and how much to you buy the rest of the repair video?
oh okay so with regular maintence do you think that a 2009 kx250f would be a good bike as long as im not riding the rev limiter all day everyday?
Would it be a wise idea to go ahead and flush the radiator really good when you do this?
you should loosen the cam cap bolts a little at a time in diagonal pattern to avoid warping them, if you ruin those you replace the whole head. and you should always put a finger under the cam caps to avoid dropping the bearing retainer clips especially if you're not stuffing a rag in cam tower or anything. i understand it's a full tear down and motor is junk but it's good practice
alright i'll do that.So i take off the clutch, flywheel all that stuff and then i should be able to see the shift shaft and what's wrong with it?
Iam sorry i ment the 2014 because now the 2014 CRF250r has duel exhaust and i wasn't sure if having duel exhaust would have any change in the engine. Thanks for your help though!
Been trying to rebuild my 05 crf250 but I cant get the swingarm pivot bolt out. It is comletely frozen in there. Ive tried heat and hammering with a punch and 4 lbs sledge with no success. Have you ever ran into this problem?
