- Ultra-Orthodox Jews dressed in costumes celebrate Purim in Jerusalem's Mea Shearim neighbourhood. The carnival-like Purim holiday is celebrated with parades and costume parties to commemorate the deliverance of the Jewish people from a plot to exterminate them in the ancient Persian empire 2,500 years ago, as recorded in the Biblical Book of Esther.

This is Purim. And it's the best holiday you've never heard of.
Purim is a holiday that instructs Jews to enter a state of self-awareness about the arbitrary and fragile nature of reality and religious codes by instructing Jews to become “so drunk that you cannot tell the difference between 'blessed is Mordechai' and 'wicked is Haman.'”

The story begins with the king of Persia who made a huge feast for all the inhabitants of the kingdom, at the feast the king called his wife Vashti, but she refused to come and therefore was sentenced to death. After her death, the king ordered to find another queen for him from among all the girls in the kingdom, he finally chose Esther, a Jewish girl. Esther did not tell the king who she was.
The king of Persia had an advisor named Haman, Haman hated the Jews and managed to convince the king to kill them all. Esther's uncle, Mordechai, spoke to Esther and begged her to go cry before the king, so that he would cancel the decree. Esther requested that all the Jews fast for her for 3 days and then she would go, because it is forbidden to go to the king without the king calling you, and if she goes without being asked she could be killed.
