What I really like about this album is that drummer Jason Pearce completely avoids the usual cliched blast beats and double kicks that are on so many metal records. The drumming is so slow and powerful, and fits so well with the overall sound. He doesn't show off at all, but simply proves what a great drummer he is - almost becoming the John Bonham of Death-Doom.

This album is deadly. They definitely stepped up their game from their debut (which was was already awesome), but man, Lords of death is insanely good.
Off topic but do you all do live reviews? I just saw Bolzer and was absolutely blown away. Yeah not too much outside of music is awesome up here, but we sure do have the greatest US music scene, that's kind of what got me into music in the first place and yes absolutely we have some awesome venues. I would like to recommend If I may, that you check out the band Fell Ruin, they are a local band that just released their second record and it's one of my favorite of this year so far, judging by your reviews I think you'd probably like it.
This reminds me a lot of pre-Turn Loose the Swans era My Dying Bride or early Paradise Lost. Or even Forest of Equilibrium era Cathedral. Every song gives me a "The Forever People" vibe. Especially the parts where they throw the tremolo picking at you.

Michigan bands have been putting out amazing records for decades. She hit on some of the obvious good ones, but the list is way too short and should be expanded to include these awesome bands, some of which have been around for the last fifteen years: Sauron, Demon Bitch, White Magician, Locust Point, Wastelander, Summon, Harbinger, Borrowed Time (reformed as Prelude to Ruin), The Swill, Acid Witch, Midas, Anguish, Nocturnal Fear, Isenblast, etc. Only Michigan is reeaaallll!!!!
candlewolff the problem with Fantano is he claims to be or wants to sound knowledgeable about everything. It almost sounds like he goes on google and name drops bands from Wikipedia. I think metal or punk reviews I would rather listen to opinions from people who specifically listen to the genre because they know what most of us listen to these genres for.
candlewolff I don't know that Fantano just can't stand him I don't know why I just think he is like one of those guys who just listens to the popular records of every genre and thinks he is an expert. I don't know he just has that douchey aura haha I will check that other guy out. Thanks

Another terrific review, Sara. However, I did not like this record as much as the previous from Temple of Void. There was something a bit too clean about Lords of Death that made me not quite as excited as I was before giving it a full spin. It might very well be the soloing or the moments when the vocals sort of float on top of the mix that turns me off. By no means am I down on Lords of Death but I didn't love it either. Totally agree on the newest Vampire though. That record is scorching!
Late reply, but funeral doom is another variation of death-doom. A *lot* slower and draggy with that impending doom feel. That's why it's not accepted in the wider world.

So when people pull my hair cause they don't like windmill headbanging, they are essentially "pulling out the weeds" then? I can roll with this headbanging/farming analogies. Can Sam be told I wish you guys would bring back the debate/ranking shows. Not the genre stuff, but the band catalogs like what was done with Sepultura. Even though I was yelling at the monitor that the order was wrong, it was still great to watch.

They have a Mayham show from earlier this year which is rad. Lots of doom and sludge. Lots of death and thrash. Check it out.
