- "Friendship is the Key" BGM from the episode "Twilight's Kingdom - Part 2" of "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" (S04E26).
-Overall Comments-
From a very intense villain, to a twisting story, to being beautifully storyboarded and animated, to absolutely God-like songs and score, to an all-out DBZ-style fighting sequence. So far, this is Friendship is Magic's crowning achievement. This season has been different in many ways, including it's overarching continuity. While the majority of the season had fairly individual and "slice of life" episodes, Meghan McCarthy and her team have managed to interweave an overarching plot into them, making almost seemingly unrelated episodes come together. It was fantastic watching all of the callbacks and references to events and characters from this season, and how those individual moments each contributed to something much larger.
This episode had hands-down some of the best music of the series, both songs and score. Daniel Ingram only provides two songs for this two-parter, but they surely fill the void of 10 songs. From the princesses, including Luna (!!), singing a song which I can only describe as "Godlike", to the fantastic finale song, Ingram, Steffan Andrews, and their team absolutely nailed it. And we cannot forget the music which takes up the majority of the episode: William Anderson's superb score-some of his best work! I wasn't sure if he would top his score from the season 4 premiere , but he delivered and then some. Not only did he hit on all of the reoccurring themes throughout the season, but he "plussed" them so much it was amazing-Please see the episode's crowning-BGM "Friendship is the Key." I'll be sure to point out as many musical callbacks and meanings as I can in the tracks' descriptions below! Enjoy, and see you for Equestria Girls 2!
-Track Specific Comments-
Here is the episode's magnum opus, and the conclusion of the "...is the Key" track collection. Here, Twilight realizes that the magic of friendship is even greater than that of the alicorns, and after teaching a lesson about friendship to Discord, and receiving a gift from him in return, rushes off the box to see if it will unlock it. The Mane 6 are able to open the box,, unleashing the "Rainbow Power" allowing the Mane 6 to come together and defeat Tirek once and for all. Also, Twilight gets a Crystal Treehouse Castle.
I say this is this episode's, and possibly William Anderson's magnum opus because this track is just that good. As the rainbow shimmer shines across all of the Mane 5, Spike, and Discord's bubble prisons, and Twilight's eyes rainbow-gleam, we get a choir-driven motif which is based off of the "Six Locks, Six Keys" theme, which is the one which has appeared during the similar scenes in every key episode this season. Here it's a little different a more epic to compliment the weight of what is happening in Twilight's mind. Next, we get an absolutely beautiful theme as Twilight reunites with her friends, and receives the gift from Discord. The score becomes more grand as they return to the Tree of Harmony and the box, becoming more tense as Tirek approaches.
And here's something we haven't heard for a while-a full-on epic orchestration of the My Little Pony theme. Making that theme sound this magnificent is no easy feat, and William Anderson accomplishes it brilliantly. This is something we heard a lot of in the season 1 premiere e, and having it reprised here beautifully ties the entire series together.
The BGM then shift to a reprise of one of the main themes of the season, which we've heard in this two-parter before, "Princess Twilight's Theme." This theme first appeared at the very end of the Season 4 opener "Princess Twilight Sparkle" as Twilight participated in the Summer Sun Celebration. Here it appears in an amazing extended form from it's original incarnation as Twilight and the rest of the Mane 6 travel with their Rainbow Power undoing the damaging Tirek has caused on Equestria. As Twilight's castle is revealed, we get a short reprise of a motif we've heard before this season, but I can remember where right now.

This is a really EPIC BGM perfect for the episode.
I agree. This is absolutely the creme da la creme of all the BGM on the show! I've never heard that originally cutesy ten-note commercial jingle sound this epic!! William Anderson deserves a Daytime Emmy for this!
2:00 Gives me chills it's so awesome.
This theme right here encompasses everything great about this series. Within context it is a beautiful thematic piece that shows both the defeat and triumph of Twilight's sacrifice along with the completion of both her and Discords arcs throughout the Season, both of their core values of what they've learnt are put to the ultimate test and and music is epic, touching and subtle - It's a truly perfect piece of music that both doesn't deserve to be in a show like this and yet completely fits and could only be in a show like MLP - On its own it's a movie quality piece of orchestral gold that's both an original score of epic propositions and an equally as epic remake of that MLP theme that's transformed from a little girl show jingle to a example of not judging a book by its cover - This is a magnum opus that has not been re-captured since Season 4 and in many ways deserves to stay that way until the movie which will undoubtedly produce something more then worthy enough to overtake its legacy.
Season 5 was great and Season 6 is...okay, not that good but regardless, this piece of music and this two-parter will forever cement MLP's standing as a fantastic show truly worthy of the fan-base it has acquired - My only hope is that this is not the end of these types of compliments, hopefully the movie and Season 7 will surpass it in ways we can only dream of imagining and Lauren Faust's proud legacy will continue.
I just wish they'ed stop reusing Discords redemption theme for situation that don't stand up to the epicness presented in this score's origin - And that they would actually give Discord himself an arc or story that actually followed up in what him and Twilight presented here. But, one miracle at a time.
3:22 this cue has been used all over Season 4 and onwards and I love it.
2:01 My favourite part of the song! Very melodic and I love the letmotif
I swear I can hear an angelic choir in the background, particularly around 1:50.
Like a historic battle and I love this theme
In the beginning the theme looks so sad but later on when they transformed into rainbowfied ponies it looks 20% cooler like Rainbow Dash!
CHIIIIIIILLS AAAAAAH omg this is so amazing!!
"She had it all, only to lose it again. She flees to the cold north once again. My friends, I think I know who I truly am."
XD Makes me say something motivating from my own series sometimes, since this score is epic.

I've made some Total Drama Presents: The Ridonculous Race movies and this is the Track 11 from the second movie soundtrack (starting with the first movie, me and my best friend Milly debut in all the Total Drama Presents: The Ridonculous Race movies, along with our alliance with Noah, Owen, Emma and Kitty, we call it The Ultimate Alliance) in that scene, Noah realizes the Magic of Friendship had never to be seeked around Equestria, but in themselves and they link with the Mane 6 and earn the powers of the Elements Of Harmony (1.Milly: Honesty, Kitty: Kindness, Owen: Laughter, Emma: Generosity, Danah (me): Loyalty and Noah: Magic) and so they defeat Tirek (who is back this time to destroy The Ultimate Alliance since he knew them)
👌🌈💜

Season 4 finale was objectively poorly written.
My fav episode are
1. Family Appreciation Day
2. The Cutie Map
3. Castle Mania
4. (Whatever the hearts warming eve play episode is XD)
5. Return of Harmony
You decide my taste in episodes >.>
Knights of the Nine I know this is years old, but how was it poorly written?
@@radioactivebutter3966 The problem I have is mainly that it’s contrived. The plot has to bend over backwards to create the big moments it wants to reach (the fight, the rainbow power and the castle). Discord is either being a complete moron or being knowingly manipulative but intentionally putting the entire country in danger, which is no better. Celestia’s plan to give all the alicorn magic to Twilight is completely stupid. Why would having one person fight Tirek be better than 4 of them? Why wouldn’t Tirek be aware of Twilight’s existence? Not only do you have a stain glass window of her, he’s currently in cahoots with Discord, of course he was going to find out about Twilight. Why did Celestia think separating Twilight from her friends was such a good idea? Every single time this happened prior (Return of Harmony, Princess Twilight Sparkle) it never goes well. Didn’t we learn in The Crystal Empire that having Twilight try to solve a problem on her own without help is not the best plan?
So Discord is an idiot, Celestia is an even bigger idiot, Twilight forgets everything she learned and just goes along with the plan anyway, and apparently it didn’t occur to anyone to try to at least keep the rest of the Mane 6 safe. If Twilight was just going to give up her magic the moment Tirek threatened her friends, why did she and Celestia think leaving them in the dark so they could easily be tricked and captured was a good idea?
There are so many questions I have when watching this episode where the only answer I can think of is “They needed an excuse for the fight to happen, and they needed an excuse to use the box to create her new castle because Hasbro wanted a new play set.” I can’t really think of any other answers that make sense.
Plus it’s hard to really raise the stakes ever again after literally all the magic in Equestria was stolen by Tirek and yet one magic box can give the Mane 6 friendship power ups that let them just instantly defeat him like it’s nothing. Or the fact that the magic of 4 alicorns is apparently equal to all the rest of the magic in the country. It makes power-scaling or stakes feel meaningless.
Also why did they trust Discord enough to send him after Tirek unsupervised all by himself anyway? What had he done to earn that level of trust? Heck, even after the show concluded I don’t think he ever reached that point.
I’m not trying to say this episode is horrible and you can’t like it, but it feels like Hasbro came to the writers and said “We want this big fight scene and Princess song to make the fans happy and a new toyline and play set to make us happy. We don’t care how much you have to contrive the plot or have the characters make stupid decisions to achieve this, just make sure you check off these four boxes no matter what.”
And that’s why I have a big problem with it.
