  • I remove the shift levers and output shaft for the feed drive, then lift the headstock right off the bed.
    I did load this in 4K fist time and as of 4.00 PM HD and 4K are still in processing mode.

    This is brilliant, you seem to be enjoying it as much as we are Keith. I get the feeling this series will be responsible for more Monarch lathes being saved than might otherwise have been. I love the way you breeze through the tasks that freak many of us out. Proper skills. Thanks for your time.

    Enjoy your videos Keith. Repairing stuff is ok but the satisfaction you get from making a part and getting something to work properly with your part is the most gratifying thing. I really enjoy making parts on my old 1938 Under driven belt drive Lathe and my old Bridgeport mill down at the farm. Nothing fancy but they get the job done.

    Man, there's a lot of stuff coming out of that headstock!!! I have my dad's slide hammer he made many years ago he used. It has come in handy many times since I took it over. I'm currently rebuilding a 15" Sheldon lathe, not nearly as massive as a Monarch. Don't have any intention of taking apart the headstock like you are doing. Enjoy your series on taking this baby apart. Thanks for sharing, Ken

    I have a mid 60s Hardinge lathe that had about a gallon container worth of cigarette buts inside the bed when you pulled the vari-speed controller for the carriage off the end of it. Never could figure that out. Taking down old stuff is like archeology. Looking back in time and seeing what happened in the past. Thanks for the video.

      I have a Karger horizontal mill (German, designed prior to 1920, but with a factory installed DC motor driving the flat belt pulleys) that I've been trying to date. The gasket between the upper and lower castings was actually part of a schematic of some kind that had been printed on heavier than normal paper. It's oil soaked and fragile, but still mostly legible in the right light. I've yet to find a date, however. It IS like archeology!

    I would recommend calling monarch with your serial number and buying the manual and build sheet for your lathe. Honestly it’s not the greatest part break down but it’s better than nothing and it’s not cheap but the fact 80 years later you can even still get it is worth a lot. And it’s a small price to keep that support available.

    • @KeithFenner

      Got their Number # ? I'm not that worried about all the details, got bearing company to help with bearing preloads, for the speeds I plan on running it and most other components are self explanatory.
      My first machine I had to put together was a 100" King VTL, sent down from Peugeot Sound Wa. to San Diego Ca. in pieces, I assembled it and it was my first machine I ever ran. From there my inside outside machinist combination took off. I was pretty much the one to be called in to investigate and repair, from then on and progress to each company I worked for over the years. with all that said it is nice having the information at hand to save some of the natural guess work the minds plays in this line of work or play, for me, dive in the deep end, rather than wade into the pool! LOL

      @bcbloc02 2 роки тому

      @@KeithFenner Probably more like $10/page for what you got. On my CBB I got 3 pages machine specific information for my exact serial number lathe with all the parts and speeds and motor configuration it was built with as well as the steady rests and follow rests it was originally built with. The rest of it will be the same stuff you can find on Ruckers Vintage Machinery site. Mine was built between March and May of 1941 according to the paperwork and sold to the US Navy. I guess I am only the second owner. 🙂

    I wonder if that threading feature is automatic, by setting the collars to move the spline rod, which would throw the drive direction, meaning the operator only needs to retract the cutting tool between cuts. Be very interesting to see that working. Good luck with rebuild Keith from Steve UK.

    Keith do the 0 mark on the spindle bearings indicate a certain way they need to be installed. off the cuff they are or should be concentric and thus it should not matter but there must be a reason behind stamping that "0" on the bearing races.
