Hiya Pet! If you haven’t seen my Northumberland Castle video, you can catch that here: ua-cam.com/video/qIHDtP8Yt_8/v-deo.html Thanks so much for joining us for this crazy adventure in Newcastle! Cheers! Dara
So weird but when you were sitting describing the methods used in building the city wall, I couldn't help but think about how that was the exact spot where that body was found just a few days prior
Hiya Pet !!! You definitely been up north too long lol If you've been around town seeing the night life and how well dressed everyone is , well they all dress exactly the same in the middle of winter no matter how cold it is
@@MagentaOtterTravels Part of my job involves gong around the city centre late at night looking for people with substance issues who may be in trouble from overdose - anyways, I few weeks ago, we found someone in that area behind where you were sitting on the wall - I don't know if you remember, but there was a 1 story drop behind you to a lower level? Well, he was there - overdose (heroin and benzos) as well as at least a litre of vodka, judging by the empty bottle in his hand. It's a common thing in every city. It had been a lovely warm day, so people had been walking past him thinking he must have just been sun bathing. He had his headphones in his ears and his phone still on his stomach. I should also point out that you were also sitting on a huge rat's nest (and I do mean hundreds of rats). They live right along that whole section of wall as it is the backlane running along Chinatown - is basically waste food city and they have a big nest under that whole mound that you were sitting on top of. Next time you're in the city, walk up to Leazes Park by following the side of St James' Park - you'll soon see all the rats. Plus its a nice park for a walk (it has a small lake and ducks, swans and geese) but look out for the rats. They're everywhere! D'ynahwitameenlikepet?
As a born and bred Geordie it's so lovely to see someone visit our beautiful green areas and historical buildings. There's so many hidden gems in the north. I'm really glad you enjoyed your visit.
Aye, there is SO much to love in the Northeast! We had a fabulous time last year (please check out my Northumberland vlogs if you are interested) and were so happy to come back again this summer. I was chuffed to discover so many fun surprises in Newcastle alone... but the whole area has a lot to explore! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I hope you have subscribed and joined the Magenta Otter Tribe for future fun ;-) Cheers! Dara
As someone from Newcastle who just stumbled upon this video with no context, I really enjoyed this :) I’m gonna binge a bit more of your content because it is just awesome!
Well, that is an extremely lovely thing to say... thank you so much! The UA-cam algorithm is not always kind to me, but I"m chuffed that it has served up this video to so many Geordies. It is very satisfying to see that people enjoy my video once I"ve spent 30 hours editing the bloody thing! haha If you enjoy travel vlogs, I have two playlists of Northumberland and Durham that you might like. I also have a lot of British culture videos, taste tests, and assorted other silliness. A bit of something for everyone... and a way for me to share all kinds of things that I find interesting! Thanks for your comment, and I'll see you around! Cheers! There I am! My big-screen debut! What a pleasure it was meeting you both and I'm so glad you had good weather for visiting the Dene, it really comes to life in the sun. As someone who's lived in the toon my whole life, I think I would've struggled to put together a better itinerary, you packed in a lot of great spots. And I'm so glad I was in the way of your shot at the mill, as otherwise we wouldn't have met! Happy travels!!
YAAAAY!!! I am chuffed to bits that you watched! Everyone has really loved your interview, and several people asked if you had seen it yet!💕 This video has done so well… my most popular travel vlog so far! So loads of folks will be seeing the lovely toon, and your fun interview! 🙌 True… what a happy accident that I was standing in your shot and you were standing in mine! Lol I’m now exploring Liverpool and we were in Manchester yesterday. Such great cities in the North! 👍Cheers! XX Dara
geordie (from newcastle) here! thanks for seeing the beauty in our city & Northumberland, we don't get much love compared to London so it's nice to see 🖤🤍
It is SO NICE to hear you say that! We LOVE exploring places that the typical American tourist just passes by... it is boring to just watch videos of London and Stonehenge and York and Edinburgh. There are SO MANY amazing places to explore in Britain! And when I go to a place like Newcastle or Bristol and discover that it is full of so much more than I expected, it's exciting to share that with everyone! I hope you have subscribed and join the Magenta Otter Tribe for future fun ;-) Cheers! Dara
A nice little tour through St Nick Cathedral here. But Newcastle has three other cathedrals - St Mary's RC Cathedral. the Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Fenham, and St James's Park :)
Born in Newcastle but my parents moved us to Canada when we were young. I go back often and consider it home. The people, the atmosphere and the city are just amazing. Hope to return one day for good. Love Jesmond Dene it’s so beautiful. I need to visit the inside of the cathedral next time I’m there. You are right the war memorial is so poignant, I found it in 2018 but now seeing the 70 display I’m wishing I would have gone back this past summer. Thank you for showing how wonderful and beautiful my hometown is.
Awwww, thank YOU for your kind and thoughtful comment. I really love hearing from people who have roots in the places we visit! I honestly try to show in my vlogs British places (as seen through my eyes) in a way that helps people who have never been there WANT to go, and people who know it well appreciate it in a new way! Jesmond Dene is a very special place. I hope you do get to return to Newcastle and enjoy it again. I also hope you check out some of my other vlogs. I have a lovely one of Durham Cathedral and also one of Manchester, if you are open to exploring some other places in the NE and NW with us ;-) Cheers! Dara
We had a grand time there! Thank you so much for watching my video, and taking the time to comment!💖 I'm excited to show my American friends the Northeast this summer!
@@MagentaOtterTravels excellent, I often wonder if Americans have even heard of Newcastle and if they have, how? Really enjoying watching the other videos on your channel at the moment too, keep up the great content!
Thanks for your great vid. As a native of Newcastle Upon Tyne, having lived here all my life, I have also had the privilege to visit and perform in Clear Lake Iowa, Mason City and Dallas, Lubbock and New Mexico. I can likewise concur how interesting your great City's and Country is. Lovely to have you folks over here
Awww, thanks so much! What kind of performer are you? We have lived near Dallas Texas for 29 years... but last year we started coming over to Cheltenham (Gloucestershire) to spend each summer. We love both the US and the UK, and my husband Ian is a dual citizen. I'm chuffed to hear you enjoyed my Newcastle video. Hopefully you saw some new bits or at least saw them in a new way via our travels. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I have more vlogs of Northumberland coming... and this week we are headed to Manchester and Liverpool... places I've never visited before. I hope you have subscribed and join the Magenta Otter Tribe for future fun ;-) Cheers! Dara
I hope the Newcastle lad watches this video! He was brilliant! I have to tell you how I met him because you will appreciate that. I was on the bridge trying to take a photo of the water mill... but he was standing in front of it blocking my shot. So I kept waiting for him to move! But then I realised HE was standing over their trying to take a photo of the bridge... and I was blocking HIS shot!! LOL... so we took turns and had a nice chat. Turns out his brother lives in Seattle... another city of bridges that he says reminds him of Newcastle. He was an absolute dear.
@@MagentaOtterTravels Did you walk around the suburb of Jesmond beside the Dene? It has some beautiful streets full of gorgeous homes depending on the route you take. It's one of the retirement options I have my eye on (from here in Australia). If you haven't already google for Jesmond Dene shots in winter snow. Just gorgeous.
@@newbris we did walk around the neighborhood a bit, and it was full of lovely homes! We actually were trying to figure out where the Armstrongs had lived 😉
THANK YOU for saying that! I'm interested to hear you call it a town city. It was interesting to visit the city and see that it had a TOWN wall and TOWN moor. My video next Friday is about the English definitions of towns a cities. A topic that always confuses Americans ;-) Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I hope you have subscribed and join the Magenta Otter Tribe for future fun ;-) Cheers! Dara
@@MagentaOtterTravels You probably know that Geordies call it "The Toon" (The Town). "I'm gannin down the toon and then I'm gannin hyem." (I going down to the town and then I'm going home). I'm Australian so if any Geordie wants to add a correction to this feel free :)
So pleased you got to see my home town! You probably didn't realise (or recognise) that in front of the Castle Keep, there is a side street (between the pub and the entrance of the bridge) were a body was found in a episode of Vera. A episode was also filmed inside the Central Arcade. I actually got the chance to see it being filmed and got a wave and Hello from Brenda Blethyn who plays Vera. I also work in the Premier Inn you stayed at! Hope the service was good, shame I missed you.....maybe next time 😏
I am thrilled to hear that you work at that hotel! Normally I am a cheeky lass who hands out my business cards and tries to get people to subscribe to my channel. I guess I didn’t do that with you? LOL Yes, the service was excellent! We enjoyed our time there. Thank you so much for pointing out that I accidentally visited two Vera filming locations. Sorry I was too daft to realise it and appreciate it! Thanks so much for watching and commenting! I hope to see you around 😉👍 Cheers! Dara
This is great! Some gorgeous sights, love the Edwardian architecture here, just simply gorgeous. Genuinely never heard of Jesmond Dene - what a lovely place! So colourful and peaceful. The black gate looks quite imposing, love it! Interesting about their being a roman fort before the castle today, thanks Ian! The cathedral was really love. Very beautiful stained glass, bet it was such an experience standing there looking at all the different heraldry's and the stunning screen! The fairground looked fun too! All them yummy treats! Thank you for such a beautiful presentation of Newcastle!
Thanks so much, it was an action packed trip... full of surprises! My favourite discoveries were the waterfall and mill in the park, the cycle hire in the Sherlock Holmes morgue (!!), and the field full of cows! Thanks for watching, Alessa! Hope you had a great wander through Scotland!! Cheers! XX Dara
FYI The Black Gate inspired JRR Tolkien, who used the name to describe the gate into Mordor in his opus Lord Of The Rings. Mordor itself was probably inspired by a visit to Sunderland, given the resemblance of the locals with Orcs. 😂
Well, "Hiya Pet" right back at you Dara and Ian! We are getting friendly now. We loved the tour. Lovely cathedral, town and market with some different items! Since we've never been to the UK we've never tried either of the cheeses mentioned. Thanks so much for bringing us along.
British cheeses are wonderful! You can probably get some nice Wensleydale and Stilton and of course Cheddar back in the US and Canada (where I think you currently are?)... but since I live in Gloucestershire, I also recommend the Double Gloucester if you can find it ;-)
Thanks for watching. I hope you enjoy your travels in Winnipeg. You might be interested to know that the two Canadian otters that we visit regularly in the otter sanctuary are sisters named Whinnie and Peggy.
Why thank you so much! Welcome to the Magenta Otter Tribe!💖🦦 We did love our visit to Newcastle. We began this week with two days in Manchester, and are currently in Liverpool! It’s been fun exploring these northern cities I had never been to before.👍
Born and bred Newcastle lad (Heaton) and so pleased to see you enjoyed our great city. Unfortunately I take this all the architecture and history for granted so it’s nice to be reminded how lucky I am to be a proud Geordie
You should be proud! I hope you enjoy the architecture a bit more after seeing the video. AND appreciate Jesmond Dene. AND maybe try eating at the Butterfly Cabinet there in Heaton. It was good stuff, and the people were very friendly! Cheers! Dara
Dara: How do you DO that?!? Fancy finding a magenta tunnel in Newcastle-upon-Tyne! And the Jesmond park at the start is beautiful. We will have to return to the city, after your tutelage here.
The magenta tunnel was pretty funny, especially since I found one in London as well, in this video that lasts a few seconds: ua-cam.com/users/shortshb5QGuVVfZo Newcastle was full of surprises... a field of cows, a bicycle hire in a Sherlock Holmes morgue, and a park with a lovely waterfall and centuries old mill! I hope you pay a visit when you make your trip to Durham Cathedral and Beamish! XX
Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave a comment! I’m really glad that you enjoyed the video. We had a wonderful visit to Newcastle! Cheers! Dara
I'm going to Newcastle upon Tyne in a couple of months, and I would have never known about the Ever Tower if not for your video! I love that stuff. (Staying at the same Premier Inn, too!) Thanks - great video!
Oh, I'm so excited for you!!! PLEASE subscribe and stay in touch. I'd love to hear from you after your visit and get your impressions of the city. DEFINITELY explore Jesmond Dene. Hopefully it won't be too wintery by the time you are there.... but I"m sure it will still be lovely. When you are at the Premier Inn, explore more of the town wall. There is loads more as you continue along, I just ran out of time! Also nearby is the Tyneside Irish Centre, which would be fun to check out... as well as a Scottish church steps away. And then loads of great Chinese restaurants all over around them. Talk about a wonderful combination of cultures!!
There was SO much in this video, Dara. Wow!! I can't decide what I liked best. All of the food was great, of course; I'll take that veggie burger, please! Then your bravery at the bike-riding was very admirable; if only Ian could have captured you on film, also dealing with the cows. And speaking of Ian, his observation about a proper location for a murder was spot on, for sure!! Thank you for every minute of this video -- oh, and I also loved the local guy expressing his enjoyment of living there and how lucky he felt. Glad we got to hear from him!
Thanks so much! You understand why this video took so long to edit... it was like 8 videos in one! But it was delightful to watch all the footage and see the crazy adventures we had... from renting bikes in a morgue to taking selfies with cows in the city!! Have you watched Vera? If you do, you'll see why I fell in love with the area ;-) And yes, I LOVE that the young man let me film him sharing his feelings about the park! He was so friendly. And if you re-watch that part you can hear a very northeastern way they say "book"... same as look and cook. Rhymes with kook. Very fun to listen to! Thanks for watching Bobby! Have a great weekend!
Aw wow! What a fantastic trip! That cathedral was utterly gorgeous, and I'd go running to that cat cafe. I'm actually a carnival ride fan, so I'd probably be checking out the Hoppings festival if I was around there. Thanks for this Dara!
Yes to cuddling the cats. A hard pass on the carnival rides. I'll wait for you at the bottom of that terror torture ride... with my Nutella covered waffle! Haha, thanks so much for joining the premiere!
The trouble with Vera is that each episode is an hour and a half... and there a million episodes! We just discovered another fun mystery show on BritBox... it's called McDonald and Dobbs. It is set in Bath, and the photography (and drone footage) is absolutely wonderful. Give that one a go first... it has a lot fewer episodes and is quite a contrast to darker Vera. But I love them both!!
Fascinating how much there is to see and visit in Newcastle. And thank you for the very interesting and well-researched information. This has been another beautiful virtual trip with both of you 💖
Really enjoyed seeing around the Toon with you guys. Very interesting and informative. The market and arcade looked like a great wander. Thanks for showing us all. Have yourselves a fantastic weekend. 👍🏻🚶🏻♂️🚶♀️. Watto & Kim.
"The struggle is real"!! I love your anecdotes, Dara. This is a spectacular presentation of Newcastle...the feel of it is such a beautiful mixture of the ancient with the modern. Loved the restaurants and the fairgrounds as well. That amusement park certainly could be a picture right out of any summer fairgrounds here in the States. Good to see Ian with his snappy bicycle helmet!! Omg, that Bubble & Squeek with duck eggs looks scrumptious! I truly appreciate how the Brits favor the maintaining of older fallen edifices. To me it demonstrates their appreciation of time past and their heritage. Thank you, again for your wonderful account. Must make it to the Northeast when I visit next spring. Cheerio to you both!!
YES, I can't recommend the Northeast highly enough! If you could visit Warkworth Castle when the daffodils are in bloom ... it would be EPIC! Please check out my vlog playlist of Northumberland (I'll link below) if you haven't seen it yet. It is a county FULL of castles and ruins, and no tourists! A few American tourists make it to Alnwick Castle or Bamburgh, but most of the time it is just uncrowded beauty. Try watching an episode of Vera as well, if you haven't, just to experience that. As for my silly comments... I"m a combination of American midwest farmer parents, slang my 20 year old kids teach me, and British sayings! hahaha Here's the playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLOedWVhYewAUqvRDVs5VqbfCr3TJgfB_w.html
Yes, you do! And if you have never explored the Dene to find the waterfall and the old mill, I highly recommend it! Hopefully you'll also enjoy watching our adventures in other parts of Britain. We have lots of fun stuff filmed that I look forward to sharing with everyone! Cheers! Dara
Hiya Ted, have you subscribed to The UA-cam Channel The Toon Review, its really good, Paul "Ditchey" Ditchburn has just gone past 14,000 subscribers, if you want all things Newcastle United,The Toon Review is the channel for you, this is Choppy in Whitehaven, Cumbria, England
Thoroughly enjoyed your video, you brought the best out of this city, and I'm glad there was no Fog on the Tyne (not sure if you're familiar with that song). You both bring out the best in everywhere you go.
Thanks so much! I don't know the song, but most episodes of Vera are cloudy and foggy and grey! haha I'm glad you enjoyed our visit. As often happens, the city of Newcastle surprised me with so many unexpected interesting bits! Who would've thought our bike hire would be in a Sherlock Holmes era morgue, fergoodnesssakes?!?! Have a great week. Thanks for watching! Dara
The thing about the Toon is it’s a great stopping off point to explore Hadrians wall, such an amazing piece of engineering, along with a few old Roman forts and villas. Sadly not much mention of the spiritual home of any true Geordie, St James park. 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I'm sorry, I'm a lousy sports fan!! And I don't drink alcohol so I didn't adequately feature the Toon's local brew either. But my video was already so long... it would be a 2 hours documentary if I included it all! Seriously, we had a blast exploring Newcastle. And YES, it is a great place to explore Northumberland and Durham from! If you are new to my channel, I hope you watch my recent Durham videos and my Northumberland vlogs from last year. We really love the area. But I am sad to say I STILL haven't visited Hadrian's Wall! MUST.COME.BACK! I hope you have subscribed and join the Magenta Otter Tribe for future fun ;-) Cheers! Dara
I first started work in the building next to the Cathedral, at the rear of the cathedral is a building what has "A Vampire Rabbit" over the doorway. There is so much to see in Newcastle, even Johnny Depp came here during his infamous court case, and went to one of pubs on the quayside. Me, I came from South Shields home of the famous Author "Catherine Cookson"
I hope to get to South Shields on our next visit! Oh yes, I forgot about the vampire rabbit… so funny! There is a lot to do in Newcastle! We are currently in Liverpool, just got here after visiting Manchester the last two days. Thanks so much for watching my video and leaving a lovely comment. Cheers! Dara
That is so cool! You need to watch this video I did where I asked a bunch of English people how they pronounce certain words. One of the people who work at butterfly cabinet participated in the survey! Let me know if you know her ua-cam.com/video/RLzjVR4Vsss/v-deo.html We absolutely loved our time in the Northeast! I have loads more content that I need to edit and publish of our stay in Northumberland. But I also have some great videos from last year when we were in Northumbria, and a pretty epic video about Durham cathedral, which I hope you watch as well! Cheers! Dara
Fantastic video of my hometown. The thing I like about Jesmond Dene the most is its changing colours throughout the seasons simply beautiful. Next time your in the grainger market pop in a place called the weigh House where you step on some scales to get weighed. For those interested in football you'll be lucky to get a ticket for a game but they do stadium tours which are excellent and even a rooftop tour where you can see panoramic views of the whole city, you would have to book im advance for this though in the clubs website. You dont eat pease pudding by itself but in a stottie a type of flatbread with typically ham. For all cyclists you can travel the full length of the river tyne embankment on a cycle track which is part of the coast 2 coast bike ride this will take you to beautiful small town and beaches of Tynemouth , whitley bay then cullercoats or at northshields you could travel over to southshield on the ferry which is quite fun. If anyones interested in coming to Newcastle and knowing about its history check out a UA-cam channel called tyneside life run by a local guy called Eddie its highly recommended, glad you guys enjoyed your stay and didn't get murdered 🙂
Thank you so much for watching my video and letting me know your thoughts! I LOVE hearing from folks who are from the places where I vlog, it is so fun to discuss the local places to visit and things to do and eat! I would love to see Jesmond Dene in different seasons... it is a lovely place. I'm NOT sure I want to be weighed at Grainger Market... I think I'd rather just eat my fill of all the delicious things in the Toon! I am disappointed I didn't get to have a stottie with pease pudding and ham... NEXT TIME! I also definitely want to get to Tyneside next time. YES, so glad we didn't get murdered... or me at least.... Ian seemed to be hatching a dastardly scheme in Jesmond Dene! Thanks again for your comment. I hope you subscribe and stick around for more fun in the North. I'm currently working on editing my Liverpool vlogs and I have Northumberland coming after that! Cheers! Dara
Better a lectern then a lecture! We didn't know anything about Newcastle, besides the beer Newcastle, so we learned a lot in this video. Great job on camera Ian!
Wow, so much to see in New Castle! The Cathedral was beautiful. The Armstrongs truly knew how to design gardens, loved the park. Ian cracked me up, murder in the park and then off to the bike shop morgue 😂! Excellent video Dara ~Cara 💖
Fantastic place Newcastle - looks like you had a great trip Dara. So much to see always in the Toon. We visit every few years for the football and we love the Tyne walk especially the High Level bridge for trains and buses. We’ve not seen that anywhere else I don’t think. It’s such a vibrant city Cheers for sharing Dara 👍👍👍
As a Geordie, I am happy you have discovered our great City. We have two Cathedral's, there's the one on the hill too :) The Grainger Town area is my favourite from a kid growing up, used to love the smell of the market. You should listen to Mark Knopler and Dire Straits, some of the lyrics are about the Quayside, and the coast.
My favourite thing is hearing from Geordies who enjoy this video! Thanks so much for watching and commenting. I did enjoy our time wandering through your toon! I didn't know there was more than one cathedral when I was filming and editing... but some other viewers have pointed that out. SO, when I filmed and edited my vlogs of Liverpool I made sure to get BOTH cathedrals! They are actually both super unique and memorable. I hope you give that video a watch as well. Cheers! Here it is: ua-cam.com/video/Lfvtg_5UsBU/v-deo.html
Geordie born and bred here. I think someone is pulling your leg. If definitely pronounced chair and not chare. I tell you what really was weird is your video showed the flats I live in. Great video by the way.
Well of course we showed your flat! We HAD to capture the most important part of the Toon on my vlog! haha The way Britons pronounce place names and a host of other words is SO confusing to us foreigners, and the fact that y'all can't AGREE on how they should be pronounced even makes it worse! People are always taking the mick because of how I say scone for example! ;-) Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I have more vlogs of Northumberland coming... and this week we are headed to Manchester and Liverpool... places I've never visited before. I hope you have subscribed and join the Magenta Otter Tribe for future fun! Cheers! Dara
I'm a Newcastle lady and loved watching your video. I'm pleased you loved the city. I've lived here all my life and am still discovering new things. Come back soon. 🥰
We would love to come back! I'm chuffed to hear that you enjoyed my video, and that you also discover new and interesting things around the Toon! I can't promise any more Newcastle videos soon, but I have more vlogs of Northumberland coming... and this week we are headed to Manchester and Liverpool... places I've never visited before. I hope you have subscribed and join the Magenta Otter Tribe for future fun ;-) Cheers! Dara
Lord Armstrong and his wife truly knew how to design gardens, parks, and bridges! Wow, They really left a great legacy to the local people and visitors.
Wow, this was lovely, well just watched on big telly so going to be working my way mentally backwards through your visual feat on such a significant place in our hearts. Lets start with that massive ick, no worse food on the planet than the tripe, but clever Dara, i know you know that about us! Ick ick ick! Scones and breakfasts? Im guessing Newcastle can have us all beat on that! A lovely Northern, all encompassing group of people that are very welcoming! Well two decades ago me and Jill met, but we courted, fought and disagreed over the lovely Newcastle! Id be big on clubbing by the river, booze cruise trips to Amsterdam and Jill. Well probably she was doing exactly the same. Why aye pet! People from Newcastle are the most friendly, and up for it, people in the UK! We have such a close connection with this place but you guys delved deep! It was great to see such a deeper side to a place we hold close to our hearts! Was expecting this to be out of your comfort zone but instead you put us Newcastlefiles in our place! Well done guys, great vid xx
Thanks so much! Let's just agree that next time you visit Newcastle you can skip the tripe but try out The Naked Deli... those yummy chocolate protein shakes would be the perfect thing before a hike!
Thank you so much! I spent ages editing this video, so I'm truly chuffed to hear that people like it! I hope you have subscribed and join the Magenta Otter Tribe for future fun ;-) Cheers! Dara
@@MartinT5600 That’s wonderful! We actually have not spent much time in Lancashire yet. But we are going to Manchester and Liverpool for the first time this week! And I still need to publish the vlogs from our Northumberland adventures this summer 😉. See you again I hope! Cheers! Dara
Hey buddies!! We’re home after a lovely afternoon with you guys, just catching up!! This is a great video. I think Ian has been watching too many Midsomer murders!! Gorgeous old bridge in Jesmond Dene Park. Gonna say it again. This is a great video, so informative and a great look at Newcastle - you’ve made us want to go! Music is totally on point!! Wills has just perked at ‘st Nick’ !! That bike place was unreal!! Gorgeous gorgeous cat!!! Oo that Broad chare pub food looked amazing! The Otter £10 was cute!! We’re so glad Vera made you go to Newcastle - you did it proud!!! Cheers 🍻
Aaaah you are too kind! Yes that’s right… all St Nick churches should be Wills’ favourite! There is one by Albert Docks you know? It was FAB meeting you today! Glad you made it home safely 💕
Thank you so much!! I like your username… makes me think of ferrets… which makes me think of OTTERS!🦦💖 Do you live near Newcastle? We left Manchester this morning and are in Liverpool now! Exploring all different cities in the north this summer!😉 Cheers! Dara
Why, thank you so much! That is incredibly kind of you to say. I’m not everyone’s cuppa tea, but I appreciate my little community of friends who enjoy my quirky commentary😉💕! Have a great weekend! Cheers! Dara
A delightful trip down memory lane for me, thank you so much. Incidentally pease pudding is pronounced “peace” and delicious with stottie cake. If you get the chance, buy a peach melba in Greggs, they’re only sold in North East England. Also pet, as you probably already know, is short for petal. Enjoy Durham; if you’re not going up a hill, you’re going down but the river is lovely to swim in.
Thanks for correcting me on pease... we did learn that nursery rhyme in America and we always pronounced it peez ;-) I wish I could have bought a stottie at Greggs as well as a peach melba... but I just didn't have time. I felt like I was eating constantly as it was! The day I visited the Beamish was a pretty food intensive day! haha I love the saying about Durham! Cheers! Dara
Fascinating how much of Newcastle reminds me of the older parts of Sydney and Melbourne - especially the Victorian and Edwardian architecture. The Tyne Bridge really has a Sydney Harbour Bridge vibe. I looked it up to see which was older - Sydney's started construction a couple of years earlier than Newcastle's but Newcastle's opened earlier. Loved seeing the cheese and fresh food markets. At first glance the cheese seemed expensive but after a quick currency conversion it was extraordinarily cheap - especially for artisan cheeses. I think similar here in Oz would be 3, 4 or 5 times more expensive. I hadn't seen much about Newcastle before so this was lovely. The Murder Park was delightful, but should we be demanding some sort of proof of life from Dara? 😁
So fun to hear your comparisons from Down Under! Yes, the bridges were of a similar era and style, as is the architecture. When I go back to Texas, I really miss the wonderful British cheeses at AFFORDABLE prices!!! Yes, I am still alive... thankfully Ian kept his murderous urges at bay... probably because he wanted a cycling partner for the next day! LOL
For the record, I have no intention of murdering Dara or anyone else. I only made that comment because Dara has made me watch far too many British detective shows and it has poisoned my thinking.
While I've watched videos that show the fabulous architecture of Sydney and Melbourne, I'd love to see it in person. Lately I've been seeing videos that feature the impressive skyscrapers being built in the cities.
@@ians3586 before covid I'd read that there were dozens of skyscrapers being built or planned in Melbourne. More than the rest of Oz combined I think. Even during our long lockdowns the building industry kept chugging along. Having lived in both cities they both have impressive skylines.
That's cool! Yes, I didn't realise when we were staying there what a historic building that was! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. 💖 Cheers! Dara
I lived and worked in Newcastle for many years and consider it my spiritual home ,though I usually describe it as a large village. At one time I used to cycle across the Moor to and from work , often at night , which could be quite alarming when cows lay close to the paths. My eldest son worked in your hotel when it was the Co-op store. I still love the toon though I haven't been (except for hospital appts. for quite a while now.
Thanks for sharing your memories! It’s fascinating that the hotel used to be a co-op and in the stairwell still has a lot of little museum exhibit about the co-op that was previously there! I admire them for maintaining the history. 👍 I was surprised to see all the fun things Newcastle had to offer! Great place!
Woop woop watched this on the big tv loved it you showed us of lots of stuff in and around Newcastle we did not know about! That guy in old costume with an energy drink was funny followed by Ian outside a castle with his biking helmet 😂🤣 love you guys learn so much from you even though we are English! @@MagentaOtterTravels Oh my. Guess what I found when I was researching for my latest video? A pub called Trent House in Newcastle. Just 7 minutes walk from where you were staying. The images on the maps thing appear to show lots of magenta coloured lighting. There's a photo of a woman with magenta flowers on her dress. and there's even a dog wearing a magenta coat. 😁 However did you miss it Dara???

What an awesome video you did the city proud there. Did you try the pease pudding? Thank you for such a lovely video showcasing a city I love and call home. Sad to have missed you guys but seems like you had loads of wonderful suggestions
You gave so many good suggestions! Both of the restaurants I featured were because of you! No, I wasn’t able to try pease pudding or a stottie. I wanted to, but I had so many other things to eat! Nice coverage of some of the highlights Dara. I'm glad you went to Grainger Market as I spend hours in there during my visits home drooling at the butchers and greengrocers. I thoroughly enjoyed the video and it what my appetite for a couple of weeks when we'll be there. Next time you venture this far north you should check out the coast from Tynemouth to Berwick as there are some lovely villages and towns. And some very nice restaurants. I know you visited some in your castles coverage so they should have given you a taste perhaps.
Glad to hear you are headed to a visit to the Toon soon! I would love to spend more time exploring Newcastle and Durham and Northumberland. There are always so many places to go! I was amazed how interesting the city was, and our surprising discoveries there! Renting bikes in a Sherlock Holmes era morgue? Taking selfies with cows in a big field in the city? Such an adventure!
Newcastle City centre is my shopping centre, I'm so lucky to see these sights a couple of times a week. The architecture is stunning, bridges, and a river running through it. What more can you want ❤️ ps. I stayed overnight in the castle, it was a ghost hunt. 👻🏰
Ooooh, that sounds really fun!! I've heard about some haunted locations in Newcastle. Did you encounter any spirits?? Newcastle really is a lovely city with a lot to offer! I haven't been back to Newcastle since I finished university there and the changes are just amazing.Did you know that Newcastle is one of only three cities outside of London with its own subway system, the others being Liverpool and Glasgow.
I didn’t know that… good to know! I’m in Liverpool right now! Cheers! Dara P.S. So, football man, who is your favorite team? I visited the Man U stadium today 😉
Excited for this one! Hopefully be in from work in time for this, failing that it will definitely be part of our friday night big screen entertainment! 👍
Really enjoyed the video. The street the cathedral is on was the first street in world to have electric lighting. Next time go to the discovery museum. It’s so interesting. Really glad you enjoyed your time in my city.
We loved it! And it's been a blast to hear from so many Geordies who have commented on it! Thanks for the note about the electric lighting. We had a great time visiting Newcastle! I hope my video encourages Americans to go beyond London and Edinburgh and come visit! But I really LOVE hearing from folks like you who call Newcastle home... I hope you enjoyed seeing me visit and hearing my perspective as a foreigner. And I hope you enjoyed the "Sherlock Holmes" place where we hired our bicycles! LOL Thanks for your comment! @@MagentaOtterTravels I haven't lived at home for 13 years now, and I wasn't aware that place had become a bicycle rental, I am pretty sure it wasn't that when I was at home. I think you did a good job of showing the city and surrounding areas like Northumberland and Durham, you guys even went to Beamish! It is not just Americans, I have noticed a lot of foreigners just go to the same old places, but that is the same for every country I reckon. It is why I made a UA-cam to try and show Taiwan but I am still trying to figure out a style that works for me. Enjoy the rest of England and the snow.
I love being able to visit locations from TV shows or movies and especially books in the UK. I've made a pilgrimage to lots of different locations, at one stage I even had a tourist pamphlet showing all the filming locations of different movies in the UK.
This morning Ian just found an article which mapped out all the filming locations in the Cotswolds. Honestly if you go to one of these lovely and popular places, it has likely filmed MANY things there. I noted that in my vlogs of Stanway and Bamburgh... but I've tried not to make the filming notes too big a part of my vlogs. Interesting to know, but not as fascinating as experiencing the real place and thinking about how it was centuries ago ;-) Thanks for watching! X
Hi and thanks, Magenta Otte Travels for sharing. Indeed, enjoyed the tranquility of strolling the park and finding such a gem like an arch bridge. As a local person speaks in your interview, this place is as if an oasis in a large city. ---3;17. This historical church's opulent architecture and interiors intrigued me. And yes, I was stunned by the spectacular pipe organ, stained glass, and detailed wooden work. Well, It's fascinating to see cows in the middle of the road.---17:18. I'm sorry to hear that you had to carry your bike on these stairs---18;12 Those meals are good treats after you had to go through the stairs---19;36. It's really a charming town I would like to spend a day exploring. You made a good point that we can view 3 landmarks, from one spot, Chinatown gate, an ancient town wall, and the stadium. Well done. Another successful video. 🙋♀🙋♀🛶🛶
Thanks very much for watching and commenting! It has been great getting to know you. Newcastle really is a wonderful juxtaposition... of cultures, time periods, and delightful surprises! Have a great weekend! XX Dara
It's a very interesting video of Newcastle, we've been through it but never got the chance to look around properly. As soon as you see a photo of the bridge you know it's Newcastle. We too watch the TV program Vera, she looks to be a female version of detective Columbo played by Peter Falk, they both are a bit scruffy and drive old cars ! How did you enjoy your new mode of transport ? ..you've gone from using horse power to becoming a girl biker with peddle power ! 😉 Remember to keep to the speed limit and no stunt riding ! 😉 It's a lovely video you and Ian have done, and as Vera would say, "Well done pet you've done a great job" 😉
Yes, the bridges in Newcastle make it very recognisable! Ian LOVES biking around, and I do it to be supportive, even though I'm not quite as big a fan. Hauling that bike down the million steps was NOT fun haha. I heard someone else compare Vera to Columbo. I guess they are similar... dumpy cars and dumpy trench coats (as we call them in the US)! haha Thanks for watching, Pet!
@@MagentaOtterTravels If Ian is keen on biking and you aren't, then a tandem bike will solve your problem ! yeah ? 😉 With Ian's peddle power on the front you can then sit back and relax while Ian does all the peddling ! (sorry Ian) 😉 As a precaution though you'll need to put a message on Ian's back that reads, " If anyone can see this, then my wife Dara must have fallen off !" 😉
Thanks for a brilliant tour of Newcastle - with great commentary from both of you! Such variety - hadn't appreciated how much the city has to offer, and I suspect cycling around is the best way to see all the best bits! (Our only view of Newcastle was passing by in the pouring rain ☔towards the end of our Coast-to-Coast cycle ride 🚴). Another excellent vlog!

My home city, will be back there next year for a few days, not a fan of tripe, with you on this, but pease pudding, ham between a stottie cake ( A type of bread ) 😀 just wonderful. Almost certainly the friendliest city in the UK, although biased, we have 2 Cathedrals, St Nicholas and the football stadium affectionately known as the Cathedral on the Hill. Arriving into Newcastle or the Toon as we call it by train into the Central Station you see the Tyne Bridge you know your hyem or home for us Geordies it can be an emotional experience for those of us who now live away, back next year for a few days, knowing that the locals will understand my Geordie accent. Thank you great content so many places of my youth.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment! It was fun learning a bit about the Geordie accent 😉. I agree that it is a fantastic city! I never get to do everything I want to do in a place I visit, and I was very disappointed that I wasn’t able to go to Greggs for stotties or try the ham and pease pudding sandwich ☹️. I’m glad you are planning a visit! Remind me where you live now?
Lived in Newcastle city centre for a few years, its cool to see the city through someone else's eyes. Majority of these sites I walk past daily, giving them no thought to them.
@@MagentaOtterTravels Benwell was the site of the world's first electric light bulb factory. Its biggest claim to fame is that it's where I was christened and where my dad used to lie on the pavement kicking and screaming when he couldn't get his way. 🤣 My grandmother was a member of The Sisterhood of the Bond Memorial Methodist Chapel.
If you're ever back here, Newcstle has two Cathedrls, St Nicholas Cathedral which is Church of England and St Mary's Catholic Cathedral thats just down the street :)
I hope to return one day, and would love to see the Catholic Cathedral next time! Check out my Liverpool Cathedrals video if you are interested in seeing my tour of the two VERY unusual and VERY different cathedrals in that city. I loved seeing them! Cheers! Dara

@MagentaOtterTravels Brenda Blethyn will opening the festivities at the Charlotte Straker Summer House fete in Northumberland this Saturday,. June 15. 'One person who will definitely be at the fete this weekend is Christine Bennett, who is venturing all the way from Australia to visit some of the places featured in her favourite TV programme, as well as hoping to meet some of its stars.'
Nice video. Newcastle actually has three cathedrals. Most of its inhabitants know about the first two, the Protestant and the Catholic ones, but not that many know of the third one. It's a Egyptian Coptic building in the western suburb of Fenham.
Interesting! I was just happy to have made it to one of them, since we packed so much into our time in Newcastle. It was a great visit, with lots of fun surprises. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! Cheers! Dara
Those double yolk eggs are great. Not sure if they have a magic way of making them or they just have a way of selecting these from normal eggs. I believe young hens often do double yolkers. They've been doing these for years though. There are several wall towers you missed and some were in use until recently, Near the wall where you were standing adjacent to china town one was in regular use by a poetry society, Sallyport tower is/was? used for venues and another was used as a bagpipe museum before it moved on.
Yes, as we were driving out of the city we went by a lot more of the town wall ruins, and I desperately wanted to stop the car and explore/film... but we weren't able to. Next time! Double yolk eggs are a mystery to me... how do they know what is in the shell?
@@MagentaOtterTravels they might shine a light through them. I think they check eggs routinely this way in processing plants to make sure they are OK and not bad or fertilised. Twin yolks might actually be the rejects but there used to be a particular farm that sold them as a speciality and i don't know how they did it or if they are still going, sounds like they might be.
Great video, however you did miss a trick Newcastle has two cathedrals the st Nicholas near the keep and a Roman Catholic cathedral st Mary's near the central station half a mile away
Yes, I apologize! I learned my mistake after publishing this video. Thankfully, it was before I went to Liverpool, so I was sure to visit both cathedrals there!💕 Hoping to publish that video in the next several weeks! Cheers!

@@YourBeingParanoid are you serious?!?! When was that?

@@Poliss95 I look forward to seeing your video, Boppy!
Very interesting and informative video. I must watch Vera and then visit Newcastle myself. Thank you, Dara and Ian!
You did my home town proud !
Thanks so much! I’m grateful to hear! Hopefully you can share the vid with a friend or two? Cheers! Dara
Newcastle is very nice city. Thank you sharing video 😊
Thanks for visiting
Fascinating how much there is to see and visit in Newcastle. And thank you for the very interesting and well-researched information. This has been another beautiful virtual trip with both of you 💖
Thanks so much, my friend! As a fan of mystery novels, I hope you enjoyed all the detective references ;-) XX
Really enjoyed seeing around the Toon with you guys. Very interesting and informative. The market and arcade looked like a great wander. Thanks for showing us all. Have yourselves a fantastic weekend. 👍🏻🚶🏻♂️🚶♀️. Watto & Kim.
Thanks Watto and Fun Size Kim! It was truly a great wander and a great adventure in Newcastle!
So much beautiful art in so many forms! Loved this tour. The area is so rich in history and stunning architecture. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
This is my hometown, and you’ve made me think I need to pop into town more often….
Glad you enjoyed your stay!
Dara
Stunning cathedral with some gorgeous details....really worth a visit!
I learnt yesterday that Newcastle has at least 3 cathedrals! I'm glad I visited the St Nick one, though!
Cheers! Dara
No way I worked at the butterfly cabinet for two year. The dene is stunning. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay in the north east
That is so cool! You need to watch this video I did where I asked a bunch of English people how they pronounce certain words. One of the people who work at butterfly cabinet participated in the survey! Let me know if you know her ua-cam.com/video/RLzjVR4Vsss/v-deo.html
We absolutely loved our time in the Northeast!
Cheers! Dara
4:42 This was my thought too, the park has a slow-down and chill atmosphere. The perfect place to retreat with a book and some good snacks.
Yes, Patz could film a "read with me" there ;-)
Better a lectern then a lecture! We didn't know anything about Newcastle, besides the beer Newcastle, so we learned a lot in this video. Great job on camera Ian!

Yes, there was a definite detective show theme to the whole video, huh? Thanks for watching! Cheers! Dara
Fantastic place Newcastle - looks like you had a great trip Dara.
So much to see always in the Toon. We visit every few years for the football and we love the Tyne walk especially the High Level bridge for trains and buses. We’ve not seen that anywhere else I don’t think.

My home toon, pleased you enjoyed your stay
Loved it! You should be proud!👍
Cheers! Well of course we showed your flat! We HAD to capture the most important part of the Toon on my vlog! haha
The way Britons pronounce place names and a host of other words is SO confusing to us foreigners, and the fact that y'all can't AGREE on how they should be pronounced even makes it worse! People are always taking the mick because of how I say scone for example! ;-)

@@ians3586 poison hmm? So that is your method of choice 😁
@@ians3586 before covid I'd read that there were dozens of skyscrapers being built or planned in Melbourne. More than the rest of Oz combined I think. Even during our long lockdowns the building industry kept chugging along. Having lived in both cities they both have impressive skylines.

I lived and worked in Newcastle for many years and consider it my spiritual home ,though I usually describe it as a large village. My eldest son worked in your hotel when it was the Co-op store. I still love the toon though I haven't been (except for hospital appts. for quite a while now.

What part of Britain do you live in now?
I'm sorry to hear that you had to carry your bike on these stairs---18;12
Those meals are good treats after you had to go through the stairs---19;36.
XX Dara
Great vid. I am from the coast a few miles away, so know these places
I’m so glad you watched! We really enjoyed our time in that area, as well as Northumberland! Cheers! Dara
I guess they are similar... dumpy cars and dumpy trench coats (as we call them in the US)! haha
Thanks for watching, Pet!
@@MagentaOtterTravels If Ian is keen on biking and you aren't, then a tandem bike will solve your problem ! yeah ? 😉 With Ian's peddle power on the front you can then sit back and relax while Ian does all the peddling ! (sorry Ian) 😉 As a precaution though you'll need to put a message on Ian's back that reads, " If anyone can see this, then my wife Dara must have fallen off !" 😉
@@captainsensible8433 most excellent suggestion! Very sensible indeed, Captain!
I’m glad you enjoyed our Vlog! I’m thankful there’s no footage of me cycling, as a pro like you would laugh at my ineptitude 😳😬
@@MagentaOtterTravels You looked very 'at home' on your bike in the photo. I'm sure you were both absolutely fine. The trick is to look as though you know what you're doing - that's what I do. Pro? (Naaa!)
I can’t believe I’ve it but I’ve never been there, you did a good job promoting it.Ps that Ferrari sounded sweet. Cheers Dara and Ian.
I hope you plan a trip up North sometime! Northumberland and Durham and Newcastle are all places I highly recommend ;-)
Have a great weekend! Cheers, Tony!
I now reside in Western Australia 🇦🇺 🙃 only 10,000 miles away
@@davidhoward5392 oh wow! That is a fair hike! 😳
@@MagentaOtterTravels Can now fly direct from Perth to London a mere 17 hours
@@davidhoward5392 well, nonstop flights are fantastic… that’s for sure!
Lived in Newcastle city centre for a few years, its cool to see the city through someone else's eyes. Majority of these sites I walk past daily, giving them no thought to them.
That’s the beauty of visiting as a tourist… we get to take in all the sights and appreciate them.💕. It’s fun to learn about new places! Cheers! Dara
23:45 "...one last photo from the bakery..." before Ian broke the glass and emptied the whole display. 🤣
Truth be told... it WAS Ian who had a treat from the bakery. I just had a protein shake ;-) haha
You got me there. Definitely my weak spot. Looking forward to those Luxembourgish pastries!
Great video. I've been to Newcastle, but i've never heard of Jesmond Dean
It’s a hidden gem for sure! 💎
I've lived here for all my life and never been to Jesmond Dene .
@@kevinbrewis6014 oh my! Please go! 👍
Benwell is so beautiful too and would welcome you with open arms. 😊
Awww, thanks so much! We need to explore Tyne and Wear on our next visit. What should we see in Benwell? Any specific recommendations?
@@MagentaOtterTravels Benwell was the site of the world's first electric light bulb factory.
Its biggest claim to fame is that it's where I was christened and where my dad used to lie on the pavement kicking and screaming when he couldn't get his way. 🤣
My grandmother was a member of The Sisterhood of the Bond Memorial Methodist Chapel.
@@Poliss95 great memories! 🤣
Cheers! Dara
I believe Jesmond Dene featured in an episode of the UK tv series 'Spender', a police series based in Newcastle
Oh that’s interesting! Great filming location for sure!
another great video, my part of the world Dana, i will get slated for this im from sunderland and sunderland fan in football, i did my apprentiship in newcastle back n the 80's, had some good nights out over with with work people, still probably, i will admit coming from sunderland, has the best night life i the country bar none. i have some good stuff, i will email it over, as its a bit long about my time in the 80's the fair, the nights, working there and the football stuff, think you will find it interesting
Cheers, Sean!
Dangit! I'm sorry to miss that!!
Cheers!
