Hello Dustin, nice to have you back every week and watch you enjoy the "new normal life"!! To explain why Vietnamese calling "anh Hai - Brother two (in the South) or "anh Cả" (in the North) meaning the first son in the family - but no "anh Một or chị một - brother/sister one" we must learn about Vietnamese history! This way of calling was first started probably before 1771s (the Lam Son's Rise up in arms against China's Thanh dynasty), pretty long time ago according to the Vietnam's Nguyen dynasty policy, the people from the North of Vietnam were encouraged (or Forced??) to move to the South (was still a large and wildland) to reclaim virgin soil, to enlarge the country and live the new life in the South. Many generations of people from the North to the South were aware that the work of exile would be difficult and they would never have a chance to come back home. To commemorate their North homeland, generations of Southern people gave the position of "Anh Cả - big brother/brother one" to the rest of the people stayed back in the North, so the eldest children are later called "Anh hai - brother two", "Chị Hai - sister two", gradually become a habit, custom, and moral tradition of the nation.
This phenomenon was caused by the Confucian tradition and ethics that attach great importance to the word "Hiếu - Filial", the oldest son has a great role in the family, when parents die, the oldest brother has the responsibility, shouldering the family chores, worshiping ancestors, raising up children... While the parents are still alive, they can't go far or leave the family.
Regarding the way of addressing people in the South, there is also a way to call according to the opposite person's name, showing a respectful attitude, to avoid calling their real name, especially for the elderly. For example, people often call: Uncle Hai, Uncle Ba, Uncle Ut, Auntie Six... These are probably the creations of Southerners due to the influence of Western culture during the years of being dominated by French colonialists, American. Like the way of Westerners often called a people in communication (eg. Mr. Nguyen, Mr. Tran ...) to show respect, instead of naming their fullname (eg. Nguyen Van A, Tran Van B…).
Language in the life of the Southern people has gone through the process of history, cultural exchange and acculturation for hundreds of years. From a cultural perspective, it is a "specialty" of the region, expressing the cultural identity of the region. regions, contributing to the richness and diversity of Vietnamese culture, but imbued with national identity.

As a non-Vietnamese this kind of video is fascinating. Things that probably seem completely normal to you by now are interesting to see: the narrow paths between ponds, all the different trees and vegetation, the people on scooters, the little shop with the juice machine etc. It's just cool to see what everything is really like there but yeah, I understand if you don't do videos like this very often haha

Dustin, look into German Pinscher breed. It looks exactly like Doberman and half of its size, weights 44-55lbs max. For both breeds and any breeds, if you take them out to socialize with other dogs and walk them 3-4 times a week, they will grow up friendly when being out on the walk.

Hi Dustin, the nuoc mia priced at 3000 vnd that you mentioned you had 10 years ago is pretty much accurate. it was probably some time before or not long after the 2008 recession. I remember back then one 'nuoc mia' vendor in Hanoi told me 'the price is always 3k per drink, regardless of the seasons'. Good times :)
I really like some of the explanations on here. Briefly though, in ancient time, the oldest son would take charge of the household while dad was out to war, hence, the oldest is number two “anh Hai”. As some explained here, number two sister became a common family title. Btw, I really enjoy your videos. I was born in a small village in Buôn Ma Thuột so yeah your videos bring back memories. Next time I suggest you to try sugarcane juice with a tiny amount of salt or kumquat, it's completely different - but please try first, someone won't like it - and it's no roll back! Give the other dogs some small bánh mì junk or snacks - will reduce their hostile after they eat them.
You could try some boiled young banana when you have alot of them, chuối xiêm sẽ hơi chát!

In the north (miền Bắc) they call first (oldest) brother “Anh Cả” which simply mean “anh 1”
But in the South (miền nam) “anh Cả” is anh 2, because number 1 is reserved for your parents (ba, mẹ là số 1)

I am reading all the explanations regarding calling children by numbers. I stand by my explanation relayed to me by my late grandmother who was a highly educated and cultured person.
The first born is called number two to deceive the bad spirit to think that the first one has already been taken. All people have of course been given proper names, but are called by their ranks in the family as the older you are, the more respect you get. But it also means that if the bad spirit does not know your name, he cannot take you away or harm you.
It is without saying these beliefs are part of the ancient culture. My brother has studied sociology at university and has learnt that these types of beliefs are not exclusive to Vietnam.

My grandpa told me that people don't call the eldest son as First son (Bác một, Cậu một...) for a reason. During the Vietnam war, the eldest son always goes to the battlefield, and the second son will take care of the family. Those who go to the battlefield, rarely come back, so the second son becomes the eldest.

History and now into so many different folklore tales. Anh Mot wasn't right in verbiage, they used Anh Ca or Anh Truong which meant first born. In the South, when the Nguyen Dynasty ruled, the Lord's name was Ca so they were forbidden from using that term for the firstborn and it went right into Anh Hai. In the north, they still use Anh Ca in many areas since they had no care of what the Southern Lord's name was. Onto the reason of numbers! It was tradition to have many many children. It was too difficult to remember all the names and many names in Vietnam are very common. So created the need of just addressing the siblings by their number. To end the number of children, the youngest was called Ut.
and you know what happened when you saw a guy or girl name Út Ráng or Út Nữa! :D
