    Eastman Winds knocked this one out of the park! Today we talk about what the US-style tuba (front-action pistons) brings to the table and why this is a candidate you should consider if you are in the market for a BBb tuba that will serve as a solid upgrade for intermediate and advanced playing in a band, orchestra, or chamber music setting. Enjoy!
    You might also happen to notice that this review features the same excerpts as and functions as a companion piece to my review of the Conn 112H bass trombone. I will be releasing mixed duet versions of the three excerpts as UA-cam Shorts over the following week, in the hopes that I can draw the attention of some of my Shorts-only viewers to my longform content. This is something that has proven very challenging.

    Is it a great horn? Yes.
    But the best part, is that it's a Tuba. #TubaGang

    This Eastman 534 is a exact copy of the King 2341 for a lot less then the American made king. Eastman, Wessex are made in the Good Jin bao factory in China for a reasonable price and quality. Tuba player and brass tech for over thirty years saying this.

      That's good to know. I've been wanting to try a King 2341 for a long time. I guess it makes sense that a long-standing design like that of the 2341 would serve as the basis for these tubas that are made overseas.

    As someone whos only played rotaries or top actions, a front action piston tuba always seemed cool to me. I recently got my own tuba and switched off of my schools Yamaha rotary tuba, getting a Wessex Excelsior 5/4 BBb compensated monster, and I'm in love with it, but sometimes it can take a bit more work to get it going. Your'e tuba playing gets better everytime I hear it! Keep up the great work

      I could never play that 5/4 top-action but a lot of people seem to like them! Thanks for your kind words! Just wait until you hear clips that aren't fifteen months old...

      Hi, I took buying this 5/4 wessex tuba into consideration. But I´m from Germany so I can´t find a way to test the tuba without going to the UK :/ What genres do you play on the tuba and what did you mean by it takes a good warmup? Greetings, Felix

    Your tuba playing is sounding great! This horn is a great horn as far as BBb tubas go, their CC tubas are great too but I would suggest staying away from the Eastman Fs for now.

      Thanks Brayden! The playing in this video is unfortunately over a year old, so not nearly as good as how I sound now, but not much I can do in that regard… Good to know about the Eastman F by the way.

    I love my 534. The only thing I don’t like is having to physically take out the 4th Valve to remove water from the 4th valve.

    • @SamuelPlaysBrass
      @SamuelPlaysBrass  5 місяців тому

      That definitely would be an annoyance. However, I recently tried a King 2341 that had a water key on the 4th slide but even still, I had to remove the slide to get all the water out! Water keys barely work on tuba…

    Problem with the ventilated valves is that the slides slip out without the compression.

      Mike Roylance of the BSO HATES them.

      They shouldn’t be a problem unless you set this tuba upside-down on its bell, which you shouldn’t do anyways. I do know of some players who have had to tie strings of sorts to their tuba slides to keep them from falling off, though.
