I feel a connection to Gonzales, TX. One of my ancestors, Jacob Darst was one of the men responsible for the cannon and "Come and Take It" flag. He was 36 years old, the oldest of the men from there, when Gonzales, TX contributed 32 men from the Gonzales Ranging Company to the defense of the Alamo. It was the only city to send aid to the Alamo, and all 32 men lost their lives defending the site. His name is engraved on the monument in San Antonio, TX in the plaza in front of the Alamo. A portrait of him once hung in the Alamo itself along with others but all were moved to the gift shop later on while maintenance was being done. The portraits may be back in the Alamo now, its been a while since I was there.

I grew up in Gonzales county so have many memories of Gonzales. When we got to go into Gonzales to do some shopping was such a treat. Went to the doctor there as well, had my appendix taken out the hospital here which was Holmes Memorial and I was 4 years old. I had my oldest daughter at that hospital also. Both of my parents, Paul and Eleanor Lassig, spent time in that hospital. I have some family on my Daddy's side buried there also. This is so dear to my heart. Thank you Mike Huckabee for sharing this. You are one of my favs.

According to our family's oral history, Thomas Redd Miller (1804-1836) was one of the Gonzales Rangers who fought and died at the Alamo. I've been to the Alamo twice, but have never been to Gonzales. It's on my bucket list.

Great town and great history! Sadly the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) just prohibited the football fans from proclaiming or waiving flags saying "come and take it". This is the college where I earned my Masters degree and I'm ashamed of them because the university executives feel the saying has been co-opted by groups that "don't share their values". I guess they mean gun rights groups. Too bad the university leadership is so ignorant of history that they don't understand the sentiment and values of the early citizens of Gonzales and today's gun rights folks are EXACTLY the same.

I guess those university executives need to be taught a lesson. In history and our Constitution that is.
