  • This is the "Costco inflatable boat". The outboard motor is a Mercury 6 HP 4 stroke. The boat performed very well overall. Propeller ventilation limited top speed, but it was fast enough for me!. I'll try different trim settings next time out to see if that helps.

    I took it out again today. The water was perfectly flat and propeller ventilation was not a problem. Max speed was 13 mph. Once on plane, I can back off to about 30% throttle and it still goes 13 mph. If I go full throttle, it still only goes 13 mph. Either way, it is fast enough for what I need.👍

      I use to run a Seago 260 with an Orca 6hp. It was a slatted floor and use to get ventilation easily. I had to adjust trim depending on the state of sea and find a good balance of weight distribution. I've upgraded to a Boatworld 395 Alu floor with inflatable keel, which I use the Orca on, with absolutely no issues regarding ventilation.

    Hi. I have the Tobin and use a Tohatsu 6hp. I'm having ventilation issues.

    I have the same boat and same outboard 6hp, I think transom is too high on this boat as I"m getting ventilation on full speed (WOT) all the time on this set up, I never tried on perfectly flat watter as this condition does not exist where i ride....Tohatsu (MERC) recomended to install hydrofoil to avoid ventelation issues but I don't like tthe idea on drilling holes in my new outboard as I"m planning to upgrade it later to something bigger.

    What steps/difficulty did it take to get this boat registered in Montana?

    • @billkaiser772
      @billkaiser772  Рік тому

      Not sure what order I did them in, but I'll try to not miss any steps. This is only if you plan to put any motor on it.
      1. Register boat at DMV.
      2. Get turned away from DMV because you don't have a boat ID. The Chinese one that came with the Tobin boat was invalid. If yours has an official Coast Guard ID, they will punch it in to their computer and tell you if it is valid.
      3. Go to FWP and have an officer inspect the boat and assign a new ID.
      4. Get a metal plate made to display your new ID and attach it to the boat. Get certificate.
      5 Take certificate back to DMV and get registered.
      6. Take newly acquired registration to FWP and get your MT boat license.
      I had to keep asking questions because different employees were unfamiliar with the process. Once they made a call or two, it cleared up pretty fast. Everyone was very nice to me. I live in Helena where all the government offices are in town, so I got it all done in about 3 hours and 15 miles running back and forth across town.

    Good morning sir I have two questions thanks for the video first of all I have the same boat I put a 9.9 mercury and I’m breaking in the motor and when I get about halfway it starts to ventilate I’m not sure what to do with this issue . Also, how do you get the stickers for the registration to stick on that PVC? Is there a special sticker that your buy?

    • @billkaiser772
      @billkaiser772  Рік тому

      The stickers... mine all peeled off. I had to buy new stickers and white plastic yard signs from Lowes. I cut the sign in to two strips and put my new stickers on the sign. I put a carabiner on the top and attach to front ring. I put a couple of small bungi cords on the bottom and attach them to the tow rings on the lower side of the raft. I had the signs on all summer and did not have any problems with them peeling off. The boat sat out in the sun the entire time.
      As for the ventilation, mine limits me to 12-13 mph at 50% throttle. If I push the throttle past that, The propellor gets air and the motor over-revs. I suppose I could try adding hydrofoils to my motor, but I haven't felt the need to try that yet.

      Good morning I added a hydro foil to the cavitation plate makes a difference allowing me to get to full throttle. also bought plastic to add registration numbers and that works. Thank you for the response.

      @@allanmcisaac9648 That sounds awesome. May I ask what hydrofoil you used?

    Is this right downstream of Canyon Ferry in MT? I spend most summer weekends at that reservoir.

      Yes, it is called Riverside Campground. This is the Missouri River, right below Canyon Ferry Dam. You can see the frozen dam in the background as well.

    Very close to getting 2019 honda 6hp for this exact same setup but there is also year 2006 9.9hp 4str mercury. Should I go for more power or younger motor? Lmk what you think

    • @warrenlee7064
      @warrenlee7064 Рік тому

      They are listed as same price so it is debatable for me

      In my case, I went for portability. The 9.9hp weighs about 100lbs and the 6hp is about 60lbs. I have to lift it on the boat and put it in the back of the pickup each use. The 6hp is very manageable to lift each time. 13mph top speed is plenty for what I need it for. Both motors have excellent reputations for being well built. The 2006 might need some maintenance, but if it hasn't been abused too bad, should be a good motor.

    What length is your motor shaft? I'm buying the same boat, was wondering if I should go with a 15 or 17 inch shaft.

    • @billkaiser772
      @billkaiser772  Рік тому +2

      15". The transom measures exactly 15". My understanding is that the long shaft is for things like sailboats or other boats with a higher transom.
