    Anything from this Wembley concert is incredible. Freddie had that huge audience in the palm of his hand the entire time, I think they would have walked over hot coals for him. My favourite at Wembley though, is Now I’m Here. There’s an energy from the whole band, not just Freddie who is having the time of his life. I thoroughly recommend it. And one other is White Queen live at the Odeon Hammersmith 1975. The song wasn’t one of their hits, but is a firm favourite among Queen fans.

    I love this song ... the passion, intensity and power is mesmerising. No Freddie not diagnosed ... this was written for the movie Highlander about immortals who were destined to fight each other and when they fell in love they never aged but suffered the loss of every love they had. So who “wants to live forever, when love must die” . 🔥👑❤️
    Great reaction 👏👏👏👏

      thank you. i guess its easy to see why i would ask the question... yet how relatable to highlander it is. after i asked that all i had was sad thoughts, to think he may been carrying that burden whilst performing that song...

    • @JaneRtn
      @JaneRtn 4 роки тому +3

      I am 100% convinced he did carry the burden alone for a very long time. This performance was 1986 so he was not diagnosed with full blown AiDS (1987) but I suspect he knew there was a problem. 😢

      @@PavTV my admiration of Freddie rocketed through the skies on November 24th 1991 ... that may seem weird as it was the day he died but let me explain.
      He and Jim Beach their manager released a statement confirming he had AIDS the day before he died!! Freddie knew he would die quickly because he had stopped taking the medications keeping him alive approximately 2 weeks earlier. So we hear the news of his illness and a day later the news that he had died ... I remember bursting into tears and thinking what a true gentleman and amazingly thoughtful person to minimise the impact on his loved ones and close friends .... he knew how horrible the press coverage would be and kept the window as tight as possible knowing that his death would reduce their vitriolic and homophobic comments by timing it the way he did. Freddie seemed to think it was his job to take care of everybody else ... a very generous and loving soul.
      Brian wrote in the bands tribute song “No one but you” to Freddie, “I guess we'll never understand, The sense of your leaving, Was it the way it was planned? “ ... I do not recommend you listen to this yet ... please explore as much as possible before.
      He kept his condition secret for a very long time, he didn’t even share what was wrong with the Brian, Roger and John until about a year or so before he died ... so for at least 2/3 years he carried this alone.
      The strength of the man physically, vocally and his incredible life force makes the feeling of loss every November 24th very hard to bear.
      I really hope you focus on lots of the incredible music created by Queen ❣️🎶🔥 and by also by Freddie away from Queen (solo albums and operatic work) without getting too impacted by the AIDS diagnosis .... he left an amazing music legacy for which he wanted to be remembered rather than because of his illness .
      Sorry rambled on a bit but hopefully this gives a bit more insight to “Mr Fahrenheit” ( song = “Don’t stop me now”)

    Made the movie Highlander..along with A kind of Magic and 3 others. Mary Austin said he knew he was HIV positive which is why he said he could not tour anymore after this Magic Tour. He found out he was full blown AIDS in April 87'. Roger said too that after Freddie said he couldn't do it anymore that Freddie must have known that something wasn't quite right. He was getting very tired and the concerts took it out of him. Freddie was aware he had it then in 86.

    This song has nothing to do with Freddies story, although it is easily seen as. You were saying about it sound like it's from an 80's film.
    You're spot on! It was wrote, by Brian May for the film, Highlander in 86. The film is about immortals who can only die by getting their heads chopped off (another Queen song taken frim the album this is, is called, "Don't lose your head") The song is about an immortal falling in love with a mortal

  • @ZENOBlAmusic
    @ZENOBlAmusic 4 роки тому +9

    Great reaction! The live versions of this song tends to be fantastic. It is one of the best songs Brian wrote. The song doesn't really have any lower parts, it is a difficult song to sing. What is good about the live version is that Freddie did not use distortion, so you really get a far more operatic sound. The studio version is very beautiful as well with a whole orchestra, and Brian also sings sections of the studio version. But I do prefer the live version with only Freddie singing, this song really suited his voice. The power in Freddie's voice is really astonishing. And it can also be deceptive, because Freddie's voice a lot of those darker undertones, especially at this time, it can sound as if he is singing lower then what he is actually singing.

    • @PavTV
      @PavTV  4 роки тому

      thank you zenobia, yeah you're right, just shows how powerful his voice was :D

      @@PavTV I might expand a bit further, maybe it might be interesting to someone. It is actually very rare to find powerful male voices in popular music, you are far more likely to find very powerful female singers in popular music, that is especially true in popular music today. Some part of the reason for that is because most of the female singers within popular culture are Mezzo Sopranos. Mezzo Soprano is within the middle range of the female voice. It is not the highest voice and it is not the lowest voice. In opera Soprano voices are the most valued.
      The voice works by weight, higher voices or generally if you want to sing higher you will have a lighter voice, and high frequencies. As you sing lower you will have a heavier and darker voice with low frequencies. Voices becomes thinner the higher you sing. Those lower and darker frequencies creates a far more powerful, bigger and fuller sound to the voice. That is why we often see more powerful female singers, Mezzo Sopranos being in the middle register of the female voice, naturally tends to have darker and more powerful voices. There are some other voice types but they are very rare, Ariana Grande for example is a Soprano. Contralto is always the rarest, Cher is an example of a Contralto. Mezzo Sopranos are also generally the most common type of female voice you can find.
      Male voices are naturally lower then female voice often by more then an octave. Unlike female voices the most common male voice in popular music is the Tenor voice. In the general male population the most common voice is also the middle voice, which is the Baritone voice. Tenors being the highest male voice also have lightest, thinnest or softest tone. The Tenor voice is by far the most popular male voice. On top of that these Tenors push their voices far beyond their normal range, or you get baritones who have to sing far beyond their normal range to create that light tone of voice. They use mixed voice or falsetto to make their voices as soft and light as possible in order to sing higher.
      People expect far more from male singers then female singers, male singers are singing in the Mezzo Soprano range instead of their real tenor range.
      The general vocal range for a tenor is C3 - C5, the range for a Mezzo Soprano is A3 - A5. so there is quite a difference. Male singers are expected to hit A5 or even higher notes such as B5's and C6 notes at times.
      Most Mezzo Sopranos in popular music cannot even hit those G5, A5, B5 or C6 notes. So you end up with a lot of powerful female singers who darkens the tone of their voices and lot of very light, thin and delicate sounding male voices.
      Each category of the voice are divided into sub categories, as well. There is one category in those voice types that is the expectation to the rule. While Sopranos and Tenors do have the lightest sounding voices, you also get Dramatic Sopranos and Dramatic Tenors. These categories of voices are actually rich, heavy and powerful despite the fact that they can sing high notes as well. They can sing high notes with the fuller sounding lower frequencies.
      Freddie was a Dramatic Tenor. In this example Freddie did hit the Tenor high C5 note in full chest voice. But as a Dramatic Tenor with those natural lower frequencies in his voice, you can easily it miss it, a Dramatic Tenor's voice does not become thin and lighter when they sing higher, it just sounds more powerful. There are no Dramatic Tenors within popular music right now that I can think of. It is quite rear most people are just Lyric Tenors. That is why Freddie's voice tends to be powerful.

    Pav: It reminds me of an old-school 80s movie...
    This *was* an old-school 80s movie. :) Queen did the soundtrack for Highlander, a pretty cool movie that came out in the mid-80s, and this was one of the big songs that came out of that movie. Brian wrote this one. They also did the soundtrack for the 80s Flash Gordon movie, which was very different in tone, very campy and over the top. This was all before it was really a thing for big rock groups to do movie soundtracks, so they pretty much pioneered that.
    This concert was in '86, BTW. One year after Live Aid.

    Aww, so bittersweet. Whenever I hear this I just remember Highlander, not Queen. Although for that reason I prefer the studio version. No shortage of breath there or the occasional scream from the audience. I mean I know that he could pull it all live as well so I don't need the proof. But I would rather listen to it the way it was first intended to sound like... Nah, I just want to hear the Highlander version, that's all :D
    He was diagnosed one year later. So no, he didn't know then... but the irony, right? Plus that talk "we're gonna stay together until we die" at the beginning.

    To me, this is one Queen song which shows why they called their band the Mothership. Where the sum is greater than the total of the parts. Really listen to the musical contribution of John Deacon. It would not have its impact without it. Same with Roger, a musical drummer. Then the emotion which Freddie was a master at. Then of course Brian May, who in the writing and production put together the best of what they could do together.

    This was definitely before we became aware that Freddie was dying.
    Who Wants to live Forever was made for the film The Highlander.
    It's included on Queen's album It's a Kind of Magic.
    Other Queen tracks included on the same film are: Princes of the Universe and One year of Love, It's a kind of magic.

    Freddie suspected he had AIDS during this time, but it was written after Brian watched a scene from highlander where Connor watches his love grow old and die while he remains forever young. The movie was released in 1986 with A Kind of Magic as a companion album by Queen.

    Freddie's actual time of diagnosis is up for debate. It is said he was diagnosed with AIDS in '87 but had some tests prior which likely resulted in an HIV diagnosis. However the song is not about Freddie. This song was actually written for the film "Highlander"(1986), and was apparently written after they were shown an early cut of the film. Queen did the soundtrack for the film and many of the tracks then made it onto the "A Kind of Magic" album.

    An under rated part of Queen by those not used to them is how fantastic they harmonize. They sound so good singing together. Think only thing close for me was Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell. Something about those two together has always been amazing.

    He hadn't been diagnosed yet, but we don't know for sure. It is coincidental though since this song, along with others, was written for the movie "The Highlander" which starred Sean Connery & Christopher Lambert. There have been several Highlander movies since, mostly bad, and a TV series based on it. Queen wrote most of the soundtrack for the original movie and another song "Princes of the Universe" was the opening credits song for the Highlander TV show. Yeah, I'm a Queen nerd, don't care lol. Best band ever. Great reaction.
