IWTI. Breath of Fire IV deserves to be featured. Fantastic animations, the ability to swap characters in battle, and being able to play as the villan to get a better underatanding of their motives all push this game to master class heights.
IWTI My pick is actually my first JRPG. Bravely Default. Its Brave and Default system makes Random Encounters be dealt with easier while its Boss Fights become incredibly engaging, I fell in love with its Job System, and its soundtrack done by Revo is still one of the best soundtracks in all of Gaming. I know people had issues with the story and the pacing of the last 3rd of the game, but I enjoyed it. Plus I love the Characters so much. The Heroes are great, but the Villains are what really stood out to me when I first played. Only issues nowadays is A. They shut down a ton of the Online Features, making the side Minigame harder to complete and B. The Eshop is shut down making this game a lot harder to access legally.
IWTI I have nothing to add ... but I watched the whole video! 🙂 Hm ... now that I think of it I like to add the PS2-title *Shadow Hearts* with it's wired story and it's "Judgement Ring" in Battle.
IWTI. I've been playing jrpgs for quite awhile. Final fantasy 2/4 on snes is the game that made me a fan of the genre. Octopath 2 is my game of the year followed by armored core 6 and street fighter 6. I love all of those games, but octopath is an instant classic that holds its own alongside the old school juggernauts like chrono trigger and final fantasy 6. I'd like to give some attention to the Lunar games on sega cd and their remakes on ps1. I prefer the sega cd version of eternal blue. Radiant historia on the ds/3ds is a great one that up until the octopath games was my favorite rpg of the last 20 years. Thanks for your videos man. They're always a good watch.
100% agree, I didn't think I was going to enjoy like a dragon as much as the other games in the series but that team nails world building and making great characters. Bonus points for job systems and non- conventional settings
IWTI. One series hardly anyone ever mentions in these lists is the Mario & Luigi RPG series. Fantastic games that are still so entertainingly hilarious today. Some of my favorite turn-based RPGs of all time!
IWTI. One series with a good turn based system that I really like is the Atelier Ryza series. It's fast, with a good flow and feels very engaging. I did not expect the combat to be that good when I played the 1st game.
IWTI there are so many great games, keep up these videos! I'm currently playing The DioField Chronicle and since you put FFT, this is a good game to include. Next in my backlog is Trails to Azure, I finished Trails from Zero some weeks ago and I can't wait to play it! (I already finished the Cold Steel series so I know what to expect, kind of) :D
IWTI. Sky of Acardia was such a breath of fresh air! Too easy, but so fun to play, the sense of exploration/adventure was great. I also like that you have temporary character during the game!
IWTI man, awesome list here! I particularly love the additions of FFIX, DQVIII and Persona 5. I'd like to throw a few! I know it's a weird one that slid under the radar, but Lost Sphear is such a good callback to classic JRPG's by Tokyo RPG Factory. I'd also suggest Persona 4 Golden, Dragon Quest XI S, Final Fantasy X, and for those who enjoyed Octopath Traveler Bravely Default II.

Of course turn based RPG will never died, but it’s evolving away from traditional turn based combat and modernized the turn based combat with the mix of action style gameplay to tactical formula Anyway here are my top 10 great turn based JRPG that should deserve to be in your list: 10. iwti There's always room for an Atelier game. Especially if your straight out of games like Tales of Arise and FFXVI back-to-back... But the series I really want to mention, is Valkyria Chronicles. Amazing soundtrack, characters, and world. It's a lot like FF Tactics actually.
IWTI haven't played Octopath 2 but loved the first one. Just daunting to add another 100+ hour game to the backlog... Final fantasy tactics is so good. I've been it 3 or 4 times, one of those was war of the lions. Now that there's a software patch to fix the audio slow down on it I'll probably play it again at some point. FF9 is me favorite main line final fantasy. I have a hankering to play it again but going to wait in case the rumors of a remake are true. Just played my just persona game a few months ago and that was 4 golden. My wife got me 5 royal for my birthday and it's high up on my backlog. I've played Chrono trigger so many times... Probably once every 3-5 years. Absolute masterpiece. Haven't played Jack move but I've heard good things. I just finished trails in the sky sc so haven't gotten to zero yet . Xenogears is so good. They need to re release it with no changes other than the second disc being finished Never played DQ 8. only DQ game I've played is XI I would put any of the suikoden series on here particularly 2 and 3. Also two of my favorite games recently are ara fell and rise of the third power.

One of the most underrated and hidden gems has got to be Legend of Legaia. That game got me into the JRPG category and has made me a lifelong fan. #IWTI
IWTI- Phantasy Star IV on Genesis was my intro to JRPGs and I still to this day wonder why more games don’t use well drawn comic book style panels to tell stories
IWTI. I loved Octopath Traveler 2 -- I'm already wanting to replay it on a different system. I'm a little annoyed that my original playthrough is stuck just shy of 100% because the final superboss kicked my ass so hard that I gave up and walked away. I thought the superboss of Octo 1 was tough... yeesh. You also have two of the games I have been waiting forever to show up on Playstation's new classics service -- Xenogears and DQ8. On the subject of a Xenogears remake, the style of Star Ocean 2's remake basically made me think Xenogears would be perfect in that same setup.
IWTI I love and am currently playing _'Octopath Traveler'_ on PC right now. I am REALLY looking forward to _'OT II',_ I've heard so many good things about it. I also love _'FF IX'_ and think it was truly a love letter to all the past games and for that, it really is special. _'FF Tactics'_ is one of my all-time favorite SRPG's and I re-play it once in a while. _'Jack Move'_ looks really intriguing and I'm thinking of maybe picking it up someday. _'Xenogears'_ is another one of those games I own but, have never really played. I loved the _'Xenosaga'_ trilogy and hope all 4 of those games get faithful to the original remakes. I want to say that I guess I'm one that was never impressed by _'Chrono Trigger'_ since it's release. Having played _'FF VI'_ _(which is my favorite of the 2D FF games]_ just before _'CT',_ I was expecting the same level of depth and detail but to me, it came across as shallow and toned down. As if Squaresoft was trying to make things more commercial in order to attract a bigger yet, more casual crowd. I will say that the soundtrack is one if the best I've ever heard and truly beautiful. Last, for me personally, if I ever *_HAD_* to pick just *_ONE_* game as my "favorite" of all time? Then I would have to nominate *_'FRONT MISSION 3'._* I love everything about this game - the storyline, the characters, the gameplay mechanics, the graphics, the sounds, the music, the secrets and the fact that it is being remade next year, just as the first two _'FM'_ games have been. Hopefully, it turns out as great, if not better than the original! In the meantime, I'm loving the _'FRONT MISSION 1st'_ remake and am eagerly awaiting the release of the _'FRONT MISSION 2'_ remake coming Oct. 5th _[one day before my birthday! Yeah!]._
IWTI. I’d just want to add Bravelt Default , Fire Emblem Three Houses and Sea of Stars. I also wanted to add my love for Octopath Traveller 2. That game got my in ways little other media ever has. The characters, story and the voice acting are just mind blowing. The soundtrack is amazing. It’s just my game of the year and one of my top 3 favorite games ever. Thanks as always for adding to my backlong and to my list of favorite games.
IWIT. A few that pop into my mind, Breath of Fire III's snappy combat with quick menus and flashy animations is always a joy and keeps it engaging and fun, and Grandia's battles taking the idea behind the ATB system in a whole new direction, with you being able the interrupt enemy attacks by timing your own turns. And lastly, Wild ARMs 5's Hex battle system takes attributes from both traditional and turn-based and tactical RPGs to make something really engaging, where positioning makes a difference and buffs and debuffs are applied to specific Hexes instead of characters themselves.
IWTI - I know some people have already said it but Bravely Default (and Bravely Second (and Bravely Default II)) are some of the best JRPG experiences I have had. The music is absolutely phenomenal and in the first game particularly it does something incredibly clever with a big plot twist that was quite literally in front of you the whole time. I could also mention the original Octopath Traveler while I’m at it since it got me into JRPGs. Also Sea of Stars was phenomenal.
IWTI: Maybe you want to give Troubleshooters a go.... it's a strategy JRPG that is a mix of both FFT and XCOM (of all games) but has an incredible story to the point it flabbergasted me how they could intertwine so many different stories in such an elegant way. Much like P5Royal it gave me the feeling the cast wasn't just 2 dimensional but were each seperate individuals with their own personality, goals, ambitions and flaws and we're not talking about just the good guys here... the bad guys, the passers-by; Troubleshooters makes the characters feel alive and if you fear that comes at the cost of content then you will be sorely mistaken as the main story is expansive (to say the least) and then there's just about as much additional content as there is actual story and no one-shots in that regard either... this game OOZES story
IWTI. I am still fairly new into jrpgs but the longer I dive into the more I like it. For now I am playing Trails in the Sky and I am loving it. I also tried demo of Octopath Traveler 2 and I cannot wait to get into this series. Already bought the first one and I am going to buy 2. soon enough😅
Bravely Default, it had the feeling of an old school RPG, just better. The characters were good and the soundtrack is just incredible. Ok, I just saw that someone already did Bravely Default, so I'm switching to something else. And I'm switching to Lost Odyssey. And someone else picked that one too. As how the saying in my hometown is, a third try. It's Bremen and I don't know how to translate that, the closest thing is probably "Third time's a charm". I winder why it's always 3. It's Bug Fables, the Paper Mario we never got.
IWTI I think Yakuza Like A Dragon should be on the list. I'm relatively early on but it's got to be one of the best jrpgs I've ever played. Also I wouldn't mind seeing Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne HD Remaster on the list too. Same great Nocturne with tons of quality of life improvements that made it one of my top 10 jrpgs!
IWTI. I think Bravely Default 2 doesn't get enough love. Obviously it's namesake combat system is to be praised along with how it does it's class/job system.
IWTI, Some heavy hitters there! Totally agree with you on your game of the year so far, Octopath Traveler 2 is phenomenal! Now i know this isn't a JRPG but it is a turn based RPG and i just have to recommend it because its great! Child of Light is a wonderful experience! But if we talking just JRPGs i would heavily recommend Disgaea 4! I think its the best in the series!
IWTI: Final Fantasy 6 is my all time favorite JRPG, though it might be a little tough for modern gamers to get into, since it is pretty old school. It also has its share of flaws, but in my mind, it's nigh perfect and it's the one that sparked my love for JRPG's almost 30 years ago (I'm old now). It's definitely a top favorite of many FF fans. Also, the pixel remaster is available to play, though I would actually recommend playing the original SNES copy (it'll be called Final Fantasy III).
IWTI Hey Alex, great list, pick one great game that is hard, there is so many. I guess I will go with Phantasy Star IV, such a great finish of the story of all four Phantasy Star, love the fighting system when you can program the order of attack so they can combine their spell together for a greater effect!

“IWTI” Breath of Fire 3 & 4 are awesome classic RPG. I also grew up with “Vandal Hearts” for PS1. I think this game is up there with FF Tactics, difference is the blood gushing scenes and it’s shorter than FF Tactics. Another good SRPG would be Vangard Bandits for PS1. Hopefully you see this comment, please do a review on any of these Classic masterpieces please.
IWTI. Final Fantasy Tactics is one of my all-time favorite FF games. I remember pouring so many hours into it on the original PlayStation. I wonder what happened to the rumored remaster that was in the Nvidia leak a year or so ago. I'll be really curious to see what they do to/with it and what platforms it's released for. One of the games on your list that I started and never finished was Final Fantasy IX. I think I stopped playing right around the point when I got the Ramuh summon with Garnet. When I think back, the one thing I recall was its ridiculous random encounter rate. The art, characters and story were all wonderful though.
Just to name a few I think are worthy of mention: Legend of Legaia Lunar silver star story 1 and 2 Legend of Dragoon Grandia Lost odyssey Love the content. Keep it up!
Iwti Labyrinth of Refrain. I'm normally not a fan of first person dungeon crawlers but this game blew me away. The story starts all fun and innocent but it gradually gets darker and darker as the game progresses. The customizability of each individual unit is deep and fun to min max. Smashing through walls like the Kool aid man to solve puzzles is a blast too. Seriously underrated hidden gem and one of the best JRPG'S that I have ever played.
IWTI. How could you have left out the Suikoden series. Some of the best turn-base games Hopefully with the HD2D remake coming next April everyone will be able to enjoy these awesome games
IWTI, I would have thought Lost Odyssey would be a shoe in. With it's beautiful world and storytelling and (fairly) unique ring system adding a different dimension to the engaging turn-based battles. And while it's got Final Fantasy in its DNA, it manages to carve it's own unique path.
IWTI my cousin left his FFT gba cartridge laying around all the time so I finally decided to play it. I guess I'll just say that anytime I get a gba emulator on a new device that's the first game I install just to make sure it's running
IWTI Played rented Super Mario RPG, but A FF7 demo for the PC is what really got me into JRPGS. I fell in love with them ever since!!!! P.S. I want Golden Sun to come back!! lol
IWTI Omg... I really wish there were more classics on the list like Legend of Legaia, Shadow Hearts, Golden Sun, and Jade Cocoon. I did love the addition of FF Tactics, but FF Tactics Advance should also be on a list somewhere (and possibly added to the remake as well).

Then I would have to nominate *_'FRONT MISSION 3'._* I love everything about this game - the storyline, the characters, the gameplay mechanics, the graphics, the sounds, the music, the secrets and the fact that it is being remade next year, just as the first two _'FM'_ games have been. Hopefully, it turns out as great, if not better than the original! In the meantime, I'm loving the _'FRONT MISSION 1st'_ remake and am eagerly awaiting the release of the _'FRONT MISSION 2'_ remake coming Oct. 5th _[one day before my birthday! Yeah!]._

I’d just want to add Bravelt Default , Fire Emblem Three Houses and Sea of Stars.
I also wanted to add my love for Octopath Traveller 2. That game got my in ways little other media ever has. The characters, story and the voice acting are just mind blowing. The soundtrack is amazing. It’s just my game of the year and one of my top 3 favorite games ever.

A few that pop into my mind, Breath of Fire III's snappy combat with quick menus and flashy animations is always a joy and keeps it engaging and fun, and Grandia's battles taking the idea behind the ATB system in a whole new direction, with you being able the interrupt enemy attacks by timing your own turns.
And lastly, Wild ARMs 5's Hex battle system takes attributes from both traditional and turn-based and tactical RPGs to make something really engaging, where positioning makes a difference and buffs and debuffs are applied to specific Hexes instead of characters themselves.
IWTI. great list! however, i feel that you should make a list for Tactical/Strategy RPGs as i think they are a different genre altogether. :)
IWTI - I know some people have already said it but Bravely Default (and Bravely Second (and Bravely Default II)) are some of the best JRPG experiences I have had. The music is absolutely phenomenal and in the first game particularly it does something incredibly clever with a big plot twist that was quite literally in front of you the whole time. I could also mention the original Octopath Traveler while I’m at it since it got me into JRPGs. Also Sea of Stars was phenomenal.

IWTI: Maybe you want to give Troubleshooters a go.... it's a strategy JRPG that is a mix of both FFT and XCOM (of all games) but has an incredible story to the point it flabbergasted me how they could intertwine so many different stories in such an elegant way. Much like P5Royal it gave me the feeling the cast wasn't just 2 dimensional but were each seperate individuals with their own personality, goals, ambitions and flaws and we're not talking about just the good guys here... the bad guys, the passers-by; Troubleshooters makes the characters feel alive and if you fear that comes at the cost of content then you will be sorely mistaken as the main story is expansive (to say the least) and then there's just about as much additional content as there is actual story and no one-shots in that regard either... this game OOZES story
IWTI Definitely picked many of my favourite turn based games. Though I haven't played Trails to Zero I've been playing Cold Steel and loving it.

I am still fairly new into jrpgs but the longer I dive into the more I like it. For now I am playing Trails in the Sky and I am loving it. I also tried demo of Octopath Traveler 2 and I cannot wait to get into this series. Already bought the first one and I am going to buy 2. soon enough😅
Bravely Default, it had the feeling of an old school RPG, just better. The characters were good and the soundtrack is just incredible.
Ok, I just saw that someone already did Bravely Default, so I'm switching to something else. And I'm switching to Lost Odyssey. And someone else picked that one too. As how the saying in my hometown is, a third try. It's Bremen and I don't know how to translate that, the closest thing is probably "Third time's a charm". I winder why it's always 3. It's Bug Fables, the Paper Mario we never got.
I was going to comment Bravely Default too. Despite it’s flaws it still holds a place in my heart.

IWTI I think Yakuza Like A Dragon should be on the list. I'm relatively early on but it's got to be one of the best jrpgs I've ever played. Also I wouldn't mind seeing Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne HD Remaster on the list too. Same great Nocturne with tons of quality of life improvements that made it one of my top 10 jrpgs!

Bravely Default and Xenosaga!
IWTI. Dragonquest 11 is truly magical. Its modern yet traditional and seriously made me feel like a kid again.
IWTI. I think Bravely Default 2 doesn't get enough love. Obviously it's namesake combat system is to be praised along with how it does it's class/job system.
IWTI, Some heavy hitters there! Totally agree with you on your game of the year so far, Octopath Traveler 2 is phenomenal! Now i know this isn't a JRPG but it is a turn based RPG and i just have to recommend it because its great! Child of Light is a wonderful experience! But if we talking just JRPGs i would heavily recommend Disgaea 4! I think its the best in the series!
IWTI. The GBA classic series Golden Sun was one of my many formative experiences getting into JRPG's.
My favorite is probably Pokémon Yellow. Haven't tried nor completed many JRPG's. But man, I played that for ages and have fond memories of it.
Iwti Xenogears is easily the best game they could remake. I wouldn't even care if they if they left disc 2 incomplete like in the original.
IWTI. Legrand Legacy, it's flawed sure, but it's still a great game and a love-letter to older JRPGs.
I love Legend of Dragoons, maybe because it was one of the first jrpg that i layed, but also because its really good.
IWTI: Final Fantasy 6 is my all time favorite JRPG, though it might be a little tough for modern gamers to get into, since it is pretty old school. It also has its share of flaws, but in my mind, it's nigh perfect and it's the one that sparked my love for JRPG's almost 30 years ago (I'm old now). It's definitely a top favorite of many FF fans. Also, the pixel remaster is available to play, though I would actually recommend playing the original SNES copy (it'll be called Final Fantasy III).

I guess I will go with Phantasy Star IV, such a great finish of the story of all four Phantasy Star, love the fighting system when you can program the order of attack so they can combine their spell together for a greater effect!

Iwti - Final fantasy 7 on ps1 was my introduction into the rabbit hole that is jrpgs. Still my favourite game of all time.
Iwti: Dragon Quest XI is a great turn-based jrpg for both new to the genre and old-school jrpg players alike.
“IWTI” Breath of Fire 3 & 4 are awesome classic RPG. I also grew up with “Vandal Hearts” for PS1. I think this game is up there with FF Tactics, difference is the blood gushing scenes and it’s shorter than FF Tactics. Another good SRPG would be Vangard Bandits for PS1. Hopefully you see this comment, please do a review on any of these

Final Fantasy Tactics is one of my all-time favorite FF games. I remember pouring so many hours into it on the original PlayStation. I wonder what happened to the rumored remaster that was in the Nvidia leak a year or so ago. I'll be really curious to see what they do to/with it and what platforms it's released for.
One of the games on your list that I started and never finished was Final Fantasy IX. I think I stopped playing right around the point when I got the Ramuh summon with Garnet. When I think back, the one thing I recall was its ridiculous random encounter rate. The art, characters and story were all wonderful though.

I'm normally not a fan of first person dungeon crawlers but this game blew me away.
The story starts all fun and innocent but it gradually gets darker and darker as the game progresses.
The customizability of each individual unit is deep and fun to min max. Smashing through walls like the Kool aid man to solve puzzles is a blast too.
Seriously underrated hidden gem and one of the best JRPG'S that I have ever played.
IWTI. How could you have left out the Suikoden series. Some of the best turn-base games Hopefully with the HD2D remake coming next April everyone will be able to enjoy these awesome games

IWTI, I would have thought Lost Odyssey would be a shoe in. With it's beautiful world and storytelling and (fairly) unique ring system adding a different dimension to the engaging turn-based battles. And while it's got Final Fantasy in its DNA, it manages to carve it's own unique path.
