Lovely examples and admirably comprehensive feature walkthrough. The best parts were the sections that remind me what I can do with my original Batumi. That calms my urges to sell it to upgrade to the new version.
@@MonotrailTechTalk If you had a simple oscillator, how would you duplicate its sine wave and shift the phase of each copy as perfectly without Batumi? Is a simple Doepfer A-125 doesn't seem enough? I'm also wondering how one could recreate something like the Three Body and its phasing feature.
Interesting thing about Batumi is that all 4 LFO's stay in sync. I'd have to read up on the functionality of the A125, and whether it shifts a phase based on time, or relative to the frequency of the incoming waveform :) You would only need one 90 degree shifted version. Then you can copy and invert the shifted and original to create the 180 and 270 shifted version.
Could you please show more detail of that drum patch, please? Are those your own samples? Which module did you use for playing those? Did you also modulate parameters on that sampler?
Just got myself a Batumi I with the Poti expander. I remember I was turned away from this module at the beginning because it was too much for me to understand as a beginner. I think I'm ready now! It was either the Batumi or the ochd; decided to go with the Batumi because of the extra flexibility/complexity. So long and thanks for all the patches!
Nice! If you are getting interested in this I am pretty convinced you will enjoy it! Even if it takes a a bit to grasp all of it, that will only mean it will grow with you and you will discover more uses for it along the way. It's absolutely a great module!
There's always new modules going to come out every day :) Just new options, updates, or alternatives. Both modules you got are great, and you probably got them for good reason! Enjoy :)
Nice module for sure but for the price of a Batumi + Poti you can almost get a Kermit mkiii which is probably the most versatile LFO/modulation source/ wavetable oscillator in all of Eurorack world in just 12hp. Only two advantages Batumi has over Kermit is more hands on control and multiple waveform outputs per channel at the same time. I gotta give it to XAOC though; releasing a Batumi mkii is probably the best move they could've made after being a Behringer clone-victim.
Think it was the right move indeed, just make it better :) I also really enjoy the smooth random output, think that ads a lot, but I'm very biased towards smooth random voltages :) In any case, have to admit I don't have much xp with the Kermit, will have a closer look, for some reason always thought it was a dual module!
You should really check it out some time then. It's a modulation powerhouse and has great internal X-mod which is assigned kinda like with the new DSI synths. Press the button of your desired X-mod source, wiggle the pot of your destination by how much you want it to be modulated and that's it. It also has very versatile external CV control per channel including input attenuverters and output attenuators per channel and even presets and preset morphing. @@MonotrailTechTalk
Kermit is horribly menu divey, plus there are loads of combination keypresses, and some really small fonts on that screen. Batumi is much more immediate.
@@tinytuco horribly menu divey I don't second. Shortcut combinations on the hand absolutely though, that's why I mentioned it as a plus for batumi. There is always going to be the tradeoff between depth and functionality and immediacy and handling.

Hi there! The oscillator at 30sec is Batumi II ;) The module can be used as oscillator because it tracks 1v/oct well into audio rates. One LFO is used as square wave osc with pulse width. And one LFO is used as noise source. The patch is explained in detail in the video at 8:13 Edit: Filter is Zagzreb, in screen on the left.
Gotta love Xaoc(“Working Class Electronics”!-that’s like calling a Tesla a “Working Class Car”), I picked up the Batumi and Poti, paid out the nose, a month and a half later the “New” and “Improved” Batumi comes out. Hi there! Of course I understand there is a bit of a ‘bollocks’ moment when a new version of something you just bought comes out. At the same time, I don’t understand it when people get angry about that. Maybe my thoughts can change your perspective on the ‘lesson’ to be learned. Improving and evolving is a crucial part of any business. Weather you buy a new car, some new pants, or synths. If the company stays in business they will improve on ideas, make new products, and replace the old. In fact, it’s exactly BECAUSE you support and buy products from a company they are able to grow, keep doing research and evolve their range. Similar, the fact you could buy the module you bought is because people supported Xaoc by buying their modules for years, and they had the resources to design and manufacture it. The module you bought is expensive, not overpriced. The price is set by a small company aiming to make enough profit for that company to stay in business and keep improving and innovating. The module still does exactly what you wanted from it when you decided it was worth buying. Feel good about supporting a company that designed, produces and keeps improving what you are interested in. On the other hand, more stuff for cheap. I get it. It’s a free world.
I considered everything you said before and my point is this. Hi there, and thanks for your thoughts! In general, I am very hesitant of going in depth with these discussions. The web is filled with them, and they very easily seem to spiral and become 1 on 1 heated arguments. I appreciate your kind words through, and as you put in effort to write, I am happy to share a few more things that currently shape my thoughts, just in case you are interested. Likewise, none of this is an attack on you or anyone else, there’s some self-criticism as well, and don’t think things are simple. - Modular companies are extremely small. A lot are just one or two people building things. The ‘big’ players in modular land often just have a hand full of people employed full-time. If you email these companies you often get responses from founders and makers. These are companies without investors and layers of management collecting profits. Just a couple of people making a living. There are no Lambos, and no yachts. - The material cost of modules (and most high-end equipment) is indeed a pretty small part of the price consumers pay. Of course, the consumer pays assembly costs, VAT, profit for the retailer (like Thomann or Perfect Circuit), shipping from manufacturer to retailer, etc, etc. Still, there’s a relative ‘high’ profit margin on these things, no doubt. Simple comparison with my own channel: I ask people to donate money on Patreon to support me. If you look at the ‘cost’ of this channel, it’s just a monthly studio rent, monthly software subscription, and camera write-off, that’s it. But for me in order to research topics, write scripts, record videos, edit, in other words do this full time, I also need to pay rent for a place to live, food to eat, health insurance etc. So, I need a LOT more money than what the channel ‘costs’ to keep doing this. - Because modular companies are so small - even though modular is becoming more popular, it’s still a niche market - they function like me, and need to cover living costs in the profits of limited sales to stay alive. Large holding companies with multiple brands, branches, and larger profits (with CEOs, and layers of management structures), have other options when it comes to setting strategies and creating profit. For example, have and entire department that’s not profitable as an experiment. Or sell products closer to production cost, or even at a loss, just to see if flooding the market will push out competition and create profit options in the long run. Or maybe decide just the amount of media attention is worth the cost as a marketing tool. - There’s nothing illegal about any of that in our society. And I’m not judging any consumers in a hard way, because I know that would be hypocrite of me. I just happen to be involved in the synth community a lot, and care for the people in it trying to create interesting and innovating things in a fair way. At the same time, I am not that involved when it comes to, for example, furniture or clothing, branches where the exact same things play. - I think modular synths are pretty unnecessary items. Whether you are comfortable with paying €100 or €250 for a quad LFO, I’d say you don’t classify as poor. I completely agree anyone should prioritize health, education, and other important things first. But none of these products are necessary to make interesting and or good music, grow as a musician, or start exploring or having fun with music. - When people buy luxury items everyone is free to decide what ideals they like to support, how invested in a scene they care to be, and how much price is related to their ideology. From a consumers perspective I still often advice people new to synthesis to get a Neutron, simply because it’s great money to fun ratio for a consumer, and I really hope people have a blast with that. But I personally make other choices in my studio, because I like to support innovating companies designing products, and think a healthy climate with friendly and respectful competitive companies will create more interesting innovative synths and opportunities in the long run. Edit: I always care for respectful thought sharing, and people are always welcome to do so in my comments. UA-cam doesn’t push up responses to excising comments though, so I don’t always see them, but will try to keep an eye out 😊 All the best to you in any case, and enjoy the modular!
