Is he using 3 steel strings and 3 nylon strings or are my eyes playing tricks on me?

I'm far (very far!) from an expert on these matters but I think it's similar to a standard guitar, in that the lower strings are wound and the higher strings are single lengths of metal or nylon in this case.
Yamaha has this to say, as your question got me curious:
Acoustic guitars and electric guitars use steel strings, whereas classical guitars use nylon strings. Strings 1 through 3-the strings that produce the high pitched treble tones-are a single, transparent nylon string. Strings 4 through 6-those that produce low base tones-are usually silver in color, but consist of around 200 individual strands of nylon wrapped with silver plated copper thread.

No, Just a usual classical guitar nylon (or fluorocarbon) string set with wound basses and clear trebles.
