  • Last week, a long-form essay about autism by Jill Escher was published in The Free Press (TheFP.com). The article was about how we have grown increasingly complacent about the autism crisis at a time when autism rates continue to increase and the dire need for long-term care services is exploding. The piece received a lot of attention and Jill found herself deluged by comments and questions. In this episode Jill responds to some of the messages, emails and comments she received, including about vaccines, neurodiversity, Feda, autism genetics, and the fact parents can't die.

My mom is still parenting in her sixties because 2 out of 3 us are on the spectrum and supports don't exist. Her friends' kids have jobs and spouses and their own children.

I really hope that doesn't happen to me. I'm on the spectrum as well and can't find independent living supports (despite needing them) due to being too high-functioning. It's really frustrating because I don't want to live with my parents until they die, I want to have my own job and my own living situation and my own life.

I gave up at the second comment because it was about vaccines.

Yeah unfortunately the "vaccines cause autism" myth just won't die.

Thank you for being a champion for the severely autistic. Please keep in mind that the internet mob does NOT represent the majority of people. Your work is appreciated!

If you're not impaired then you probably don't have it.

100% agreed, as someone with autism/Asperger's who *is* still (albeit mildly) impaired. I get there are people who were impaired as children who are not anymore due to learning to deal with their disability (e.g. savant Daniel Tammet), but still, they were impaired at some point. I'm sick of these people who self-diagnose who think that autism just means being quirky.

@@matthewcrome That's quite a sweeping generalization for you to make about others without knowing definitively what their neurology is, whether they have a formal label or not, nor what they think autism is. You can share your opinion without unnecessarily denigrating strangers/individuals you know little about.
Ultimately, regardless of people's understanding of it, autism, as a developmental disability, has defined diagnostic criteria. Thus, it matters little what some random person does or does not "perceive" it to be anyway...because it is what it is.

My family and I are relatively new to your channel. I agree with most of the videos we've watched. But I'm sorry to say, I cannot agree with the dismissal of possible vaccine or vaccine scheduling being connected to ASD. I respectfully disagree with you. It is extremely difficult to accept the science that has lied to us several times. You do a great job with your channel. I guess we can't all agree all of the time.

I reported your comment for misinformation. The study that started that b.s. used falsified information and the doctor lost his license. Correlation does not equal causation. For example, 3 out of 4 people who hosted the game show Password died of cancer. That doesn't mean hosting Password causes cancer.
Edit to add: The damage is done to the baby's brain before he/she is born.

There is absolutely no evidence that vaccines cause autism. Andrew Wakefield has been discredited by scientific journals and his original paper was struck by the Lancet. Meanwhile, there have been countless studies disproving the assertion that vaccines cause autism. The idea that vaccines cause autism comes from a) misinformation and b) conflating correlation with causation. The signs of autism happen to show up at the same time as childhood immunizations. That does not mean that childhood immunizations cause autism. Roosters crow when the sun comes up. Does that mean the rooster made the sun come up?

Here is a CDC link showing just a smattering the studies and evidence that vaccines don't cause autism: www.cdc.gov/vaccinesafety/concerns/autism.html

@brianrich9223 Why is the CDC not reputable? What kind of site would you believe? Some conspiracy wingnut site? Show me one reputable study showing that vaccines cause autism. Also, what is the explanation for vaccines causing autism in the first place? How do the ingredients in vaccines affect the brain? Furthermore, how do you explain all of the anti-vaxxers who chose not to vaccinate their kids, and their kids still ended up autistic.

I wouldn't have read it with your title. I would have thought it was neurodiversity crap.

It is absolutely true that individuals with much higher needs are not getting attention and support - and that is unacceptable.
But unfairly scapegoating the neurodiversity movement and making us the target for hostility and blame is not the solution. It only increases misinformation and division.
Neurodiversity is not "crap." It is the reality of our world, and it seeks to include all representations of human neurology. It is extremely concerning that the concept of neurodiversity is being so falsely misrepresented, and it does nothing to address the critical needs of a vulnerable growing population and their families.
