I am using this bag for 3 years. A few journeys.
Believe me, using the bag without any other support is too risky. They broke my shifters once and almost the frame...
Bag looks strong enough but when they torture it while carrying it, it can't keep it shape well.
I recommend people, who are using this bag to use some thick, empty cardboxes and some insolation panels to support the bag.

I love the aluminum stand and the chain cover! I've had that Evoc bag for a couple years now, but I never quite figured out how to protect the drivetrain.

Just a thought, rotate the handlebars round so the shifters point down or even slightly backward. Protects them. Without a frame as shown, to hold the bike frame in he bag, put old axles in the dropouts to keep the forks and rear triangle rigid. I read that baggage handlers prefer bags. They stay on conveyer belts. Boxes can slip and fall off, and cardboard boxes can get so saturated in rain that they disintegrate. Also bags or boxes will wheels can slide in the hold of an aircraft.

You don't have to take the saddle out for EVO bags. The saddle may provide extra protection for the frame.

Very nice review! Guys, help! What are key words to find this frame for the bike to put it on before getting it all into the evoc bag?

being new to thinks makes me feel so clueless sometimes. Despite seeing the bag in the background, I thought the subject was some kind of bag that goes ON the bike. Took me until 1:45 to realize. I kept wondering why you need to take your bike a part. I mean, you could call that or any bag on the bike, a 'bike bag'

I wouldn’t try to trust any soft bag there is just not enough support it looks like it’s wheels as protection for the back part of the frame but what protection does wheels have, they’re just too soft I’ve seen the way baggage handlers chuck things around, no I’ll get a hardcase thanks

the problem is where do u store such a big bag if your travelling!! i want to cycle around portugal but its the actual packing and unpacking and putting the bike back together looks more daunting than the actual cycle ride!

    • @charlesgould8047
      @charlesgould8047 8 років тому +4

I would suggest just using a cardboard box. then when you get to Portugal, toss the box and at the end of the trip, stop by a local bike shop and pick up another.

This bag collapses down to only a foot tall, but still the same length. Still not great unless you have someplace to keep it while you're out riding. I've used mine twice now, both times, had a relatives home to store it while out adventuring.

How secure is the bike bag? Especially against shock impact.
I cannot really trust baggage handler especially in my country.
I know bike box offer better protection but it is more expensive and heavier.

The show-pony LOOKS of the bag/box is a low priority.
The WEIGHT/dimensions of the box is of higher priority.
The COST is an even higher priority.
The PROTECTION is the highest priority.
A HARDSHELL box is way BETTER than a soft-shell bag no matter what frame is supplied with it.
A bag is only marginally better than a well-packed cardboard box.
BikeBoxAlan [BBA] do great boxes but at a prohibitively high price.
My HARDSHELL box was less than half the price of BBA with similar protection. I have some quality product development advice for BBA.
With most reputable airlines, flying on an economy ticket [not 'savers'] should give you FREE checked luggage which means your bike should not cost extra. Read the baggage information on the airline's website so that you are armed with correct information. The checkin staff are not always up-to-speed on bicycle baggage rules.
NOTE: For those with high finish frames BEWARE of velcro straps. Straps exposed to hours of in-flight vibration will polish your frame which may leave an unsightly impression. Protect your frame from strap-rub with quality foam tubing or some similar protective covering. This applies to BBA boxes as well as bags.
Also, protect your levers, they are vulnerable strapped in or not. Baggage handlers will pack excessive weight on your bag/box, so be careful.
NOTE 2: Pay close attention to boxes/bags which hang the wheelset on the lid. Those that use your own QRs do not always give adequate protection of the skewer nut. Make sure the recess on the outside of the box/bag is deep enough to avoid the skewer impacting with other bags. Also, you don't want your immaculate and expensive QRs unnecessarily damaged.
SUMMARY: Hardshell boxes are preferable to bags and bags marginally preferable to cardboard bike boxes supplied by your LBS or the airline [at a cost].
Best Bike Box = BBA, but if this is beyond your budget the B&W hardshell is a good option [among others].
Let there be no barriers. Stay safe.

    • @gcn

William Hawkes it's the maximum size bag that's allowed on planes as hand luggage - should fit any standard helmet, your shoes, and a few other bits and pieces.

William Hawkes I just pop my shoes and helmet and kit in the box. Just watch your weight limit or the airline will 'bag' you for excess weight fees.

The bike is solid and my Ebike conversion went great. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Very smooth ride at 30mph with no problems (135 miles ridden so far). The picture is a bit deceiving - there is WAY less space in the center of the frame than it shows. The suspension connection takes up the entire thing. So I needed to attach my battery on the bottom of the frame and my controller on the top. Instructions for assembly were lacking but honestly it wasn't too hard to figure out even though I have very little bike knowledge. Watched some youtube videos on adjusting the disk brakes but that was it. Still, I am loving it and very happy with the purchase.

Great info mate. What do you think of this box in the link below? It seems to be of smaller dimensions than a normal bike box so is cheaper to courier and within checked-in luggage size, not oversize luggage size. If I used a box of that size, it will be half the price to courier than the bike box they gave me at the bike shop. The box in the link below is 80 x 70 x 22cm, whereas the bike box from the bike shop is 140 x 75 x 20cm
