African Lions Arrive At Paignton Zoo

Paignton Zoo are now home to three African lions Boss, Semira and Amahle, they were welcomed to the zoo on Thursday 9th March. The three siblings have journeyed across the South West from Newquay Zoo and have begun settling into their new surroundings and exploring their new home.
Regulars to Paignton Zoo will know that last year, the decision was made to send Yali, the much loved Asiatic lion, to Fota Wildlife Park in the Republic of Ireland. There he was paired with a female as part of an international breeding programme. After Yali's departure, his enclosure has had a thorough clean and some modifications made and will now house the three new arrivals.
Head of Conservation Services Clare Rugg said that “We are very pleased to welcome the three lions to Paignton Zoo. Both Paignton and Newquay Zoo have changed substantially over the years and , we are constantly reviewing the ways in which we look after our animals. The lion enclosure at Paignton Zoo is much larger than the one at Newquay and so will provide our three lions with substantially more room.”
Transporting the lions took a lot of planning to ensure the process was as safe as possible for the lions and for everyone involved. On the day of the move there was a large team on hand including keepers, vets and drivers and three vehicles used for transportation... So if you were traveling between Cornwall and Devon that day, there could have been a lion in that van next to you!
Head of Campaigns and Programmes, Steve Nash added that “we know our members and supporters have been looking forward to their arrival. There have been lions at Paignton Zoo for most of its 100 year history and as a species that is becoming increasingly rare in the wild, we hope these new arrivals will play a key role in inspiring the next generation of conservationists.”
