@@noneofyourbusiness4595 What a ridiculous statement. You should be aware that many of the musicians that Bowie collaborated with on some of his best material were not anglos. Too many songs to mention here. Bowie would hang you out to dry if you were foolish enough to utter this in his presence.
@@noneofyourbusiness4595terrible fucking comment. His wife was black. He collaborated with so many artists who weren't anglo. Attributing his musical prowess to his race? That's awful. You're awful
I kinda like this version better than the final film version. The verses have an early reggae/doo-wop type call & response going on between Bowie & the backups. Then the chorus kicks in with a full-blown straight pop-rock riff. Would be cool to hear a final mastered version of this with Bowie singing.
Im 40 and only just heard this version for the first time. So much better and less creepy than the version in the film. Also, was that Danny John Jules in those photos? Cat from Red Dwarf?
Yeah wild things is much better, having another beat before dropping "bad luck" makes the rhyme (and the joke) work though. "When even down looks up; bad luck".
As much as I love this version, I think the film version was a necessary change to make the fire gang seem more intimidating and relate to the story better. However having Bowie be in every lyrical song in Labyrinth would have been pretty cool, it would have made him seem even more omnipresent.
Ultimately, I get the feeling that WMG or whoever owns everything now want to milk the estate as much as they can, so they're holding out until people will buy even more ludicrous boxed sets. They've gotta keep exclusive stuff in-store for people, in the long absence of Bowie.
Fantastic to hear Bowie singing this. My kids have been watching the film for the last few days and love it. At least in all the sadness of David's death we can discover more and more great stuff like this.
Interesting. I prefer the music in the final version. This version seems too upbeat for the atmosphere while the final version is both a bit playful and a bit dark.
Thank you, SO MUCH, for making this available! This is amazing, and kind of mind-blowing, after all of these years, to actually hear David singing it, himself.
This is amazing. I was already psyched when I clicked because the song in the film feels SO 80s Bowie I could hear it in my head, but then I also got awesome pictures and background info. It's just awesome to think David Bowie was recording with Jim Henson at Abbey Road Studios and Eric Idle just chilled in the background. This is amazing, thank you for uploading a little piece of history!
The coolest thing about Labyrinth is it captured a side of Bowie we didnt always get to see, he had a blast working with these people and vice versa, every time a smile hit the characters face it was real, and now we get to go back and see that any time we want. Truly an amazing gift Henson gave us by choosing him for this film.
A little bit overly complex to be honest. But it sounds honestly like an interesting fusion of 80's and 70's Bowie. The vocals were definitely improved in the final version, but I really wanna hear a more polished version of all that lovely instrumentation and weird chord progressions in the background. Maybe I'll try and make it myself someday (but don't hold your breath lmao).
@@mirrorperson1744 you know what it reminds me of? That bit in that Beatles documentary when Ringo's trying to compose Octopus's Garden, and the chord changes are really different from the final version and just not as satisfying.

This is incredible. I watched the documentary about the making of the film on DVD like 20 years ago or something, and I immediately noticed in the scene where the puppeteers are practicing the choreography of the scene, they're playing a clip of this version and I had never heard it before. Now that same documentary is on UA-cam, and when I watched it again all these years later, I heard the song and wished there was a version of it floating around. So glad I found this. Thanks for posting.
This is great! Where did you find this??? I would LOVE to hear Bowie's vocals incorporated into the studio version, just like they did with Mott the Hoople's "All the Young Dudes" on the 2006 re-release. I like Bowie's version of that song, but I like Mott's a little better, so it was cool to hear Bowie's vocals on the verses and Hunter's vocals on the chorus. Now we need a version of "Chilly Down" like that!
This is it. My favorite thing on UA-cam ever. If I ever find something else to be my favorite I want someone, anyone, to bonk me in the head. Because this is it. THIS.
oh wow, this is really nice! i'm so used to the version from the soundtrack, but i almost like this one better-- the arrangement is wonderful to listen to 💕
I do enjoy this version, though I feel the one in the movie is better. This one is a little too upbeat for the movie, so it doesn't really fit. It still sounds good though!
The fucking best thing ever this fucking is. I allways wondered if he wrote this song........I asked Google and it led me to the wiki and thus here. Good day
Yeah, the album version and the version in the film had Kevin Clash on lead vocals, since it didn't make sense for David to sing it. He wasn't there in the Fire Gang scenes, after all.
Dwarf's Danny John Jules & Charles Augins......Bowie should have starred in an episode of Red Dwarf, maybe as an alien rocker! Why not? They featured (the hands of) Phil Manzanera from Roxy Music in Psirens! I reckon Bowie would have been good as Legion, or even as an alternative Holly, damn shame.....he actually had a really fun loving side, and he'd have been up for it (but could they afford him?)
Watched this movie at least a million times growing up. I have a theory that each little section represents a different drug. The fire gang def represents weed.
@@yosefdemby8792 he's pretty good, in character. His Kermit work is great. I'm not sure how he could've been for this song, though. Kevin is a remarkable vocalist outside of portraying someone.

Man, hearing this alternate version makes me feel like I'm listening to a reunion concert of the Fire Gang.
Bowie had more talent and charisma in his left pinky than a thousand people had in their entire bodies.
The same goes for Jim Henson.

This reminds me of like a Beatles vibe rather than the more Reggae style of the movie. This was my absolute favorite song from labyrinth
Hmm, i think the changes were for the better. That initial melody is just too muddled.
