I will say, I really liked that the fellow said that when most of these people are saying or coming across as 'mean' or 'stupid', it's because they honestly just don't know how to start the conversation and that mostly they really do not intend to be that way. I am so happy I watch these podcasts and that I have discovered people like Chris Cuomo because I feel that having heard conversations like this is helping me mature more and more these days on how I can gracefully interact with other people and not misunderstand people to the point where I take things the wrong way. This is a journey I have been taking this last several years learning philosophical things like some of the things I heard on this podcast. I don’t think Trump understands how tariffs work. And his people think he’s an economic genius. When you are rich, inflation is hardly felt/noticed, especially when you will be getting a big tax cut.
This isn't true, the tariff you talk of was the smoot-hawley tarrif that was designed to protect U.S. farmers. It did play a part in the depression but only a very minor role. It was collapses of banks like Creditanstalt of Austria failing and a host of other banks failing. It was overinflated shares, speculative spending on the stocks bought on margin and banks in a panic that caused the depression. There are so many factors as to why it happened, but it was mainly banks gambling with our money, just like they do today. Trumps Tarriffs worked for the short term and will again, its what he does after which will determine the outcome. If you carry on with the current administrations economic policies and those to come if democrats win will require more money printing and borrowing, that will not reduce inflation. There is a need for trade tarrif agreements or countries like China will just owning the entire stock market, they already export around 40% of everything that the ENTIRE WORLD imports. That means just 60% left for the rest of the world to compete for.
Times change, sure, Trump’s mass tariffs are nonsense, but the world’s black market is more sophisticated than back then. That’s why sanctions don’t work well.

Hey Chris, great guest and great show. In the early part of your conversation, Malcolm mentioned your father and DPM sense of civic duty in relation to their faith. I believe you should explore that aspect much more in your quest to unearth what ails our politics. Without going too deep into the weeds, I'll just say that our drive to ride ourselves of religious dogma, we collectively pursued a secular agenda, leaving behind a common thread that was central to the Sunday morning service. Dare we say that nothing has replaced that, less everyone accuses us of proselytization. I'll stop there. However, it's an indication that sometimes advancing means not entirely deconstructing the values of precious generations.

What also worries me that now pressure over 120/79 is considered a high blood pressure. I do not see any biology beyond statistics, telling us that 125 is bad versus 120, which is good.

Ironically, I fear that Chris may have tipped the wrong way, losing his moral compass in the process. What is even more disturbing is that Chris’s journalistic integrity and values seemed to have vanished at the very moment that they may have mattered most. In fact, in many ways it is painful to watch someone whom I once held in such high esteem demonstrate such a blatant willingness to realign their values for personal gain. Ultimately, I find myself somewhat disillusioned as I am forced to face reality and thereby acknowledge that while Chris has chosen to play the role of an independent media personality, he has sadly, somehow managed to retain only the weakest aspects of his former mainstream self in the process.

Malcolm Gladwell is definitely a Liberal's Liberal, that has that type of establishment world view of the Professional Managerial Class (PMC) that made Hilary Clinton so unpopular, as it assumes a pretense that prioritizes well earned expertise over the lived experience of average people for the obvious reasons ("they", for understandable reasons, assume it's ignorance that's compounded by some kind of prejudice rather than actually understanding it from a completely different lived experience that makes regular people not to automatically accept the explanation of the experts?!?!?!? How could average people, who've not invested the vast number of hours to hone expertise, be in a position to critique and or question the well-considered ideas of experts?!? However, I'd like to think that this book is the answers to that question. That, regardless of ones's expertise and training, which can bias you in a way that is almost impossible to see as a result of thousands of hours of study that requires you to take on a certain philosophical underpinnings and or positions that necessarily inform your understanding of a certain ideology that someone outside of that worldview or education might not automatically start from that world view. That isn't to say that everyone outside of "expertise" is somehow given extraordinary insight into the thing they've studied for decades & obviously understands at a much, much deeper level. However, even though it's very unlikely for a layman to understand something differently for whatever reason, whether it's a completely different experience as a result of just coincidence, understanding something through a different set of expertise & or that it gives a different perspective on a similar idea and or the reality that any of our places within the context of class, race, gender, National identity & or absolutely anything else whatso-fuckingever could potentially give us insight, so it's important to explore?!?!? Yes, before you say that we have to let all the dumbasses "do their own research" dismissively in a way that made Hillary so popular. I'm suggesting that we may have a once in a blue moon 2% of the time be genuinely interesting and relevant interpretations of data that may not represent what the PMC crowd prefers is the outcome (or more directly, the PMC may be purposely misrepresenting for whatever reason. I don't think it's as prevalent as rightwing darknet troll suggest but I also don't think it never happens and so for the same reason everyone should be able to question everything and evidence absolutely require for all! ) The PMC as a consequence of the way they learn, their milieu and how they interpret data. The PMCs may instinctively not appreciate this advice the first time around but this wonderful book presents an opportunity to further explore many more avenues from different perspectives that, although unconventional in a higher educational sense, may ultimately inform a more nuanced approach that helps ALL fields more broadly and I hope in these extremely difficult/divided times could help bridge the gap between the people who make the plans and the ones who actually have to carry them out! Or more importantly, understanding that the new dividing line is no longer left versus right? But the gatekeepers of the establishment and their vast resources versus absolutely everyone else?!?!? I truly believe that Malcolm Gladwell is for the most part a good faith actor in these discussions I hope so anyways, because he's one of the few people who are actually meaningfully digging deep into a lot of issues that will inform our ability to work together as a community to address some extremely difficult and fraught problems that will only become more challenging as they become more concentrated and exebriated by division as well as limited resources. Been listening to this while showering. Really good discussion. Couple of points I'd like to raise. Also congrats on trying to develop critical thinking skills in people. Keep up the good work. 1) The Algerian boxer - my guess, based on the fact she had XY chromosomes - is that she was born Intersex. The I in LGBTIQ stands for Intersex. A person born with indeterminate external genitalia. People tend to forget about Intersex people BECAUSE of the EMPHASIS ON & INFLUENCE OF the trans community. Intersex people DON'T see themselves as being trans because they have a medical condition like Androgen Insentitivity Syndrome (AIS) - they see trans people as being different to them due to trans being differences in the brain - proven by research by the way. FYI - I identify as agender, which means I'm trans. My identity comes from my belief that we just shouldn't have gender roles - these are a social construct, just like ability. And what's socially constructed can be socially DEconstructed. And should be. This boxer ISN'T the FIRST Intersex atblete to compete in an Olympics- another was the Sth African runner Caster Semanya. There was also a skier whose name I can't remember, and there may well have been others - apparently Britain's Princess Anne, the Princess Royal was the ONLY Olypian to NOT be subjected to chromosome sex testing when Her Highness competed in the Equestrian events in 1976 (I think). 2) Word usage, especially by media talking heads. This morning, Australian time (I'm Australian) I saw two different news stories on the US Today show that made use of the word "decimated" but in only 1 story was the usage correctly applied. The 1st was in relation to the damage caused by Helene (the correct word is deVAStated - ok, both do start with de & end with tated, but those 3 letters in the middle make a HUGE difference), the 2nd in relation to Israel's strikes in Lebanon & the deaths of Hezbollah leadership. Because the meaning of decimated is to reduce by 10%! The Today show, which I think is ABC, NOT Fox. Helps us think critically & develop context if the reporting is accurate. 3) Chris' comment re the current situation politically is global. It's not. It's much more extreme in the US than elsewhere in the world. It's a unique situation to Merica. And goes right back to your Founding. The first country to have a written constitution. Said constitution influenced EVERY other country on the planet when it came to how they formed their governments when the time came, especially Canada (1840) & Australia (1901). Both are the SAME - Federated Parliamentary Democracies, both have 3 levels of governance - local, state & federal. Yet our political bell curve is much more centrist, whereas yours is skewed to the right. The US is also more hyperindividualised & hypermasculine in approach than other democracies. The other democracies possess strong welfare states whereas in Merica - welfare's apparently a swear word not to be used in polite company. You place strong emphasis on INDIVIDUAL FREEDOMS & RIGHTS AND ZERO EMPHASIS ON THE RIGHTS OF THE COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE. My right to A is more important that/outweighs your right to A or B or even C. Here in the land of Oz (& NOT Dr Oz) - we're not like that to the same degree - we have a strong welfare state that our Conservative parties WON'T GO AFTER. PERIOD. Such candidates just don't go anywhere come election time. We do have a Trump equivalent in Clive Palmer - used his own money to form his own political party called Palmer (the Australia) United Party. They got trashed at our last election and elected to get removed from our Register of Parties - the rout was that bad. Yes - Clive did a Trump in that he made it plain he was only in politics to make his enemies pay. Given what he did to the people of Noosa before he went in politics, I'm surprised they elected him to begin with!! 4) Dr Rose - I wouldn't mind betting she's also having difficulty publishing her work. Bucking an established narrative on ANY topic is hard because of the investment people have in the established narrative - financial, reputational, and yes - even a sense of security - because the narrative works for them.

The effect of that, I'm afraid, has been profoundly terrible. Bought into several businesses, which, like Trump, he proceeded to run into the ground. One was a nickel refinery just north of Townsville, a regional city (popn 250,000, mid way along the Qld Coast. I used to Iive in Townsville and knew someone who worked at the refinery. This person told me of a leak of a sullage pond that Palmer got fined by the QLD govt for - $3000. Chump change, right? Yeah, well Palmer decided to contest the fine - an action that COULD'VE put his GM in jail!! GM resigned (naturally) & got replaced by Palmer's nephew. Palmer also ran a high class resort in a very touristy town called Noosa into the ground. Of note the surrounding area is full of retires with money, which explains why he got elected as the Federal member. At one point, Palmer thought he could take on a Chinese govt company - don't know why. Anyway - the price of nickel dropped. IF Palmer had been minding his books (he wasn't, too busy playing payback to enemies via Canberra - which is why he ran for a federal seat, pissed off with the QLD govt), he might’ve been able to restructure. But because Palmer wasn't paying attention to the books (& creaming off the profits to fund his political movement - Palmer United Party or PUP - yes, he stuck his name in the name of the party) the refinery hadda shut the doors. Now this refinery was 1 of 3 major private employers in Townsville - the others being a copper & zinc refinery. So just imagine the effect on the local economy of the loss of 800 jobs overnight. I personally lost some $115,000 off the value of the house I owned at the time. Unfortunately - unlike Trump - Palmer never committed any criminal offences 2) Our media landscape. Initially controlled by 3 families - Packer, Fairfax & Murdoch - Rupert was born in Adelaide. I'll assume I don't need to tell you anything about Rupert. Huge war between Rupert Murdoch & Kerry Packer. Packer eventually went into TV. We have 5 TV networks. ABC (for Australian) & SBS (Special Broadcasting Service - at least 51% of their programming is in languages other than English) are BOTH GOVERNMENT FUNDED. We have THREE COMMERCIAL networks - 7, 9, & 10. Papers - major dailies are The Australian, The Age (Melbourne), Sydney Morning Herald (Sydney). Our popn dynamics are weird - about 90% live in a 200 klm wide band that hugs the coastline, with 80% of ALL Australians living in the 3 eastern seaboard states of Queenland, New South Wales & Victoria. In descending order of popn it's NSW, VIC, QLD. But the other capitals (Adelaide - Sth Aust, Hobart - Tasmania & Perth - West Aust) have their own papers. Those major dailies - owned by Fairfax. Rupert went OS & Kerry's son James (yup both called their eldest James) went out of media into casinos, all of which are in trouble with the regulators. As I said - we do have a far right wing, serviced by several parties - PUP (see above), One Nation (started by Pauline Hanson - huge in QLD & WA, but not much elsewhere), Katter Australia Party (Bob Katter, huge in parts of regional QLD, but that's it). Right now in QLD - we've got a state election in 2 weeks time - early voting began yesterday. Yes - our Conservative party put abortion on the agenda - currently it's not a criminal offence to seek one AND the procedure IS funded via our Medicare system. This was IMMEDIATELY shot down in flames by the parliamentary leader of the party in question. Any other info I can share, just ask.

Hey Chris, great guest and great show. In the early part of your conversation, Malcolm mentioned your father and DPM sense of civic duty in relation to their faith. I believe you should explore that aspect much more in your quest to unearth what ails our politics. Without going too deep into the weeds, I'll just say that our drive to ride ourselves of religious dogma, we collectively pursued a secular agenda, leaving behind a common thread that was central to the Sunday morning service. Dare we say that nothing has replaced that, less everyone accuses us of proselytization. I'll stop there. However, it's an indication that sometimes advancing means not entirely deconstructing the values of precious generations.

IT really IS....just as Malcolm alluded to is just having respect for the other person. Most people don't know hiw to begin a conversation about hot, emotional topics. If people felt they were being HEARD...with RESPECT... we as Americans would have deeper, more meaningful conversations regarding the situation of our daily lives in America.

I’m interested to know what the proper classification of high blood pressure is. I have supposedly “pre hypertension” level blood pressure but I’m 36 and extremely fit.
@codywurzer6174 There are an American heart association guidelines. What worries me is that blood pressure numbers depend on the position of the arm, it least in my case. What also worries me that now pressure over 120/79 is considered a high blood pressure. I do not see any biology beyond statistics, telling us that 125 is bad versus 120, which is good.
I am not from the US so was not familiar with the interviewer. I watched as I was interested to learn more about Malcolm Gladwell. What a difference bewteen the interviewer and the interviewee. Cuomo is too full of himself and over-dominates.

Ironically, I fear that Chris may have tipped the wrong way, losing his moral compass in the process. What is even more disturbing is that Chris’s journalistic integrity and values seemed to have vanished at the very moment that they may have mattered most. In fact, in many ways it is painful to watch someone whom I once held in such high esteem demonstrate such a blatant willingness to realign their values for personal gain. Ultimately, I find myself somewhat disillusioned as I am forced to face reality and thereby acknowledge that while Chris has chosen to play the role of an independent media personality, he has sadly, somehow managed to retain only the weakest aspects of his former mainstream self in the process.

The experts who specialize in cult behavior are really consistent with their advice on how to get people out, and it's not smashing the morons over the head with bricks. The only news show I go out of my way to watch is Lawrence O'Donnell. The guy dunks on maga cult like nobody else, but opening nearly every show with "Donald Trump, the stupidest person to ever serve as President Of The United States..." (or the laziest, one of the two) is going to deprogram exactly no one.

Malcolm Gladwell is definitely a Liberal's Liberal, that has that type of establishment world view of the Professional Managerial Class (PMC) that made Hilary Clinton so unpopular, as it assumes a pretense that prioritizes well earned expertise over the lived experience of average people for the obvious reasons ("they", for understandable reasons, assume it's ignorance that's compounded by some kind of prejudice rather than actually understanding it from a completely different lived experience that makes regular people not to automatically accept the explanation of the experts?!?!?!? How could average people, who've not invested the vast number of hours to hone expertise, be in a position to critique and or question the well-considered ideas of experts?!? However, I'd like to think that this book is the answers to that question. That, regardless of ones's expertise and training, which can bias you in a way that is almost impossible to see as a result of thousands of hours of study that requires you to take on a certain philosophical underpinnings and or positions that necessarily inform your understanding of a certain ideology that someone outside of that worldview or education might not automatically start from that world view. That isn't to say that everyone outside of "expertise" is somehow given extraordinary insight into the thing they've studied for decades & obviously understands at a much, much deeper level. However, even though it's very unlikely for a layman to understand something differently for whatever reason, whether it's a completely different experience as a result of just coincidence, understanding something through a different set of expertise & or that it gives a different perspective on a similar idea and or the reality that any of our places within the context of class, race, gender, National identity & or absolutely anything else whatso-fuckingever could potentially give us insight, so it's important to explore?!?!? Yes, before you say that we have to let all the dumbasses "do their own research" dismissively in a way that made Hillary so popular. I'm suggesting that we may have a once in a blue moon 2% of the time be genuinely interesting and relevant interpretations of data that may not represent what the PMC crowd prefers is the outcome (or more directly, the PMC may be purposely misrepresenting for whatever reason. I don't think it's as prevalent as rightwing darknet troll suggest but I also don't think it never happens and so for the same reason everyone should be able to question everything and evidence absolutely require for all! )
The PMC as a consequence of the way they learn, their milieu and how they interpret data. The PMCs may instinctively not appreciate this advice the first time around but this wonderful book presents an opportunity to further explore many more avenues from different perspectives that, although unconventional in a higher educational sense, may ultimately inform a more nuanced approach that helps ALL fields more broadly and I hope in these extremely difficult/divided times could help bridge the gap between the people who make the plans and the ones who actually have to carry them out! Or more importantly, understanding that the new dividing line is no longer left versus right? But the gatekeepers of the establishment and their vast resources versus absolutely everyone else?!?!?
I truly believe that Malcolm Gladwell is for the most part a good faith actor in these discussions
I hope so anyways, because he's one of the few people who are actually meaningfully digging deep into a lot of issues that will inform our ability to work together as a community to address some extremely difficult and fraught problems that will only become more challenging as they become more concentrated and exebriated by division as well as limited resources.

Been listening to this while showering. Really good discussion. Couple of points I'd like to raise. Also congrats on trying to develop critical thinking skills in people. Keep up the good work.
1) The Algerian boxer - my guess, based on the fact she had XY chromosomes - is that she was born Intersex. The I in LGBTIQ stands for Intersex. A person born with indeterminate external genitalia. People tend to forget about Intersex people BECAUSE of the EMPHASIS ON & INFLUENCE OF the trans community. Intersex people DON'T see themselves as being trans because they have a medical condition like Androgen Insentitivity Syndrome (AIS) - they see trans people as being different to them due to trans being differences in the brain - proven by research by the way. FYI - I identify as agender, which means I'm trans. My identity comes from my belief that we just shouldn't have gender roles - these are a social construct, just like ability. And what's socially constructed can be socially DEconstructed. And should be.
This boxer ISN'T the FIRST Intersex atblete to compete in an Olympics- another was the Sth African runner Caster Semanya. There was also a skier whose name I can't remember, and there may well have been others - apparently Britain's Princess Anne, the Princess Royal was the ONLY Olypian to NOT be subjected to chromosome sex testing when Her Highness competed in the Equestrian events in 1976 (I think).
2) Word usage, especially by media talking heads. This morning, Australian time (I'm Australian) I saw two different news stories on the US Today show that made use of the word "decimated" but in only 1 story was the usage correctly applied. The 1st was in relation to the damage caused by Helene (the correct word is deVAStated - ok, both do start with de & end with tated, but those 3 letters in the middle make a HUGE difference), the 2nd in relation to Israel's strikes in Lebanon & the deaths of Hezbollah leadership. Because the meaning of decimated is to reduce by 10%! The Today show, which I think is ABC, NOT Fox. Helps us think critically & develop context if the reporting is accurate.
3) Chris' comment re the current situation politically is global. It's not. It's much more extreme in the US than elsewhere in the world. It's a unique situation to Merica. And goes right back to your Founding. The first country to have a written constitution. Said constitution influenced EVERY other country on the planet when it came to how they formed their governments when the time came, especially Canada (1840) & Australia (1901). Both are the SAME - Federated Parliamentary Democracies, both have 3 levels of governance - local, state & federal. Yet our political bell curve is much more centrist, whereas yours is skewed to the right. The US is also more hyperindividualised & hypermasculine in approach than other democracies. The other democracies possess strong welfare states whereas in Merica - welfare's apparently a swear word not to be used in polite company. You place strong emphasis on INDIVIDUAL FREEDOMS & RIGHTS AND ZERO EMPHASIS ON THE RIGHTS OF THE COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE. My right to A is more important that/outweighs your right to A or B or even C.
Here in the land of Oz (& NOT Dr Oz) - we're not like that to the same degree - we have a strong welfare state that our Conservative parties WON'T GO AFTER. PERIOD. Such candidates just don't go anywhere come election time. We do have a Trump equivalent in Clive Palmer - used his own money to form his own political party called Palmer (the Australia) United Party. They got trashed at our last election and elected to get removed from our Register of Parties - the rout was that bad. Yes - Clive did a Trump in that he made it plain he was only in politics to make his enemies pay. Given what he did to the people of Noosa before he went in politics, I'm surprised they elected him to begin with!!
4) Dr Rose - I wouldn't mind betting she's also having difficulty publishing her work. Bucking an established narrative on ANY topic is hard because of the investment people have in the established narrative - financial, reputational, and yes - even a sense of security - because the narrative works for them.

Vis-a-vis Clive Palmer (Australia) & Trump (USA), we have had a profoundly large chunk of the population *thrilled* to listen to and consume partisan news for generations. The effect of that, I'm afraid, has been profoundly terrible. I would be almost uniquely qualified to discuss it as I have watched the news for all of my life (My father was a History professor, and I literally watched Walter Cronkite back in the 1970s).
I'd love to further understand similarities and differences between Clive Palmer and Trump, our news environments and yours.
And BTW, thank you. I'm told that Australia has been to war on the side of the USA longer than any other allied nation.

1) Clive Palmer. Businessman. Bought into several businesses, which, like Trump, he proceeded to run into the ground. One was a nickel refinery just north of Townsville, a regional city (popn 250,000, mid way along the Qld Coast. I used to Iive in Townsville and knew someone who worked at the refinery. This person told me of a leak of a sullage pond that Palmer got fined by the QLD govt for - $3000. Chump change, right? Yeah, well Palmer decided to contest the fine - an action that COULD'VE put his GM in jail!! GM resigned (naturally) & got replaced by Palmer's nephew. Palmer also ran a high class resort in a very touristy town called Noosa into the ground. Of note the surrounding area is full of retires with money, which explains why he got elected as the Federal member. At one point, Palmer thought he could take on a Chinese govt company - don't know why.
Anyway - the price of nickel dropped. IF Palmer had been minding his books (he wasn't, too busy playing payback to enemies via Canberra - which is why he ran for a federal seat, pissed off with the QLD govt), he might’ve been able to restructure. But because Palmer wasn't paying attention to the books (& creaming off the profits to fund his political movement - Palmer United Party or PUP - yes, he stuck his name in the name of the party) the refinery hadda shut the doors.
Now this refinery was 1 of 3 major private employers in Townsville - the others being a copper & zinc refinery. So just imagine the effect on the local economy of the loss of 800 jobs overnight. I personally lost some $115,000 off the value of the house I owned at the time. Unfortunately - unlike Trump - Palmer never committed any criminal offences
2) Our media landscape. Initially controlled by 3 families - Packer, Fairfax & Murdoch - Rupert was born in Adelaide. I'll assume I don't need to tell you anything about Rupert. Huge war between Rupert Murdoch & Kerry Packer. Packer eventually went into TV.
We have 5 TV networks. ABC (for Australian) & SBS (Special Broadcasting Service - at least 51% of their programming is in languages other than English) are BOTH GOVERNMENT FUNDED. We have THREE COMMERCIAL networks - 7, 9, & 10.
Papers - major dailies are The Australian, The Age (Melbourne), Sydney Morning Herald (Sydney). Our popn dynamics are weird - about 90% live in a 200 klm wide band that hugs the coastline, with 80% of ALL Australians living in the 3 eastern seaboard states of Queenland, New South Wales & Victoria. In descending order of popn it's NSW, VIC, QLD. But the other capitals (Adelaide - Sth Aust, Hobart - Tasmania & Perth - West Aust) have their own papers. Those major dailies - owned by Fairfax. Rupert went OS & Kerry's son James (yup both called their eldest James) went out of media into casinos, all of which are in trouble with the regulators.
As I said - we do have a far right wing, serviced by several parties - PUP (see above), One Nation (started by Pauline Hanson - huge in QLD & WA, but not much elsewhere), Katter Australia Party (Bob Katter, huge in parts of regional QLD, but that's it).
Right now in QLD - we've got a state election in 2 weeks time - early voting began yesterday. Yes - our Conservative party put abortion on the agenda - currently it's not a criminal offence to seek one AND the procedure IS funded via our Medicare system. This was IMMEDIATELY shot down in flames by the parliamentary leader of the party in question.
