  • A great song from her 1982 album "The Dreaming". It features Richard Thornton on backing vocals. The voices at the end are sampled from Kate's answering machine.
    Lyrics:
    The first time I died
Was in the arms of good friends of mine.
    They kiss me with tears.
They hadn't been near me for years.
    Say, why do it now
When I won't be around, I'm going out?
    "We needed you
    To love us too.
    We wait for your move."
    Only tragedy allows the release
Of love and grief never normally seen.
I didn't want to let them see me weep,
I didn't want to let them see me weak,
But I know I have shown
That I stand at the gates alone.
    "I needed you
    To love me too.
    I wait for your move."
All the love, all the love,
All the love we should have given.
All the love, all the love,
All the love you could have given.
All the love, all the love,
    All the love...
    The next time I dedicate
My life's work to the friends I make,
I give them what they want to hear.
They think I'm up to something weird
And up rears the head of fear in me.
    So now when they ring
I get my machine to let them in.
    "I needed you
    To love me too.
    I wait for your move."
All the love, all the love,
All the love you should have given.
All the love, all the love,
All the love we could have given.
All the love, all the love,
    All the love...
    "Take care, tootle-ooh."
    "Bye-bye."
    "Bye, so long now." [uncertain]
    "Bye!"
    "Later."
    "Bye-ee!"
    "Cheerio."
    "Bye!"
    "Bye-bye."
    "Bye."
    "stay healthy." [uncertain]
    "Bye-ee!"
    "Bye."
    "Cheers."
    "See ya, luv."
    "Bye!"
    "Good bye."
    "I'll see ya, luv."
    "Good night."
    "We needed you
    To love us too.
    We wait for your move."

    Kate about 'All The Love'
"Although we are often surrounded by people and friends, we are all ultimately alone, and I feel sure everyone feels lonely at some time in their life. I wanted to write about feeling alone, and how having to hide emotions away or being too scared to show love can lead to being lonely as well. There are just some times when you can't cope and you just don't feel you can talk to anyone. I go and find a bathroom, a toilet or an empty room just to sit and let it out and try to put it all together in my mind. Then I go back and face it all again.
I think it's sad how we forget to tell people we love that we do love them. Often we think about these things when it's too late or when an extreme situation forces us to show those little things we're normally too shy or too lazy to reveal. One of the ideas for the song sparked when I came home from the studio late one night. I was using an answering machine to take the day's messages and it had been going wrong a lot, gradually growing worse with time. It would speed people's voices up beyond recognition, and I just used to hope they would ring back again one day at normal speed.
This particular night, I started to play back the tape, and the machine had neatly edited half a dozen messages together to leave "Goodbye", "See you!", "Cheers", "See you soon" .. It was a strange thing to sit and listen to your friends ringing up apparently just to say goodbye. I had several cassettes of peoples' messages all ending with authentic farewells, and by copying them onto 1/4'' tape and re-arranging the order, we managed to synchronize the 'callers' with the last verse of the song.
There are still quite a few of my friends who have not heard the album or who have not recognised themselves and are still wondering how they managed to appear in the album credits when they didn't even set foot into the studio ».

Very melancholy......Often think of this as a funeral song for someone nobody loved!!!...until it was too late...........................

only kate could take the sound of people saying simple goodbyes on an answering machine, and twist it into something that has real emotional resonance.

This whole album The Dreaming is a masterpiece of Kate Bush. Better than Hounds of Love. Too bad this was too "fine" music
to so many. I bought it as a new in 1982.

There are so many fantastic tracks on The Dreaming that the odd one gets lost a little, until you realise what a wonderful song it is. All The Love is one of those. Love Del's bass on this track. There's also something about when Kate sings in that key that always does for me!

What I like about All The Love is it's musically like a link between Never For Ever and The Dreaming album and also a kind of forerunner of Mother Stands for Comfort from Hounds of Love. It's like some of the seeds of parts of Hounds of Love are in Never for Ever and The Dreaming.

Its so lovely to be amongst the kate Clan. The dreaming confirms Kate Bush as the most important female artist ever to come from the UK. I don't say that in an idle fashion either. From the way she approaches her work to the control of her own career she took from the very beginning. We have no right to expect her to be a genius as well. Yet she is.
The Dreaming will be seen as the masterpiece that it is one day. It's amazing that she took that intensity and made The Hounds Of Love. Lucky Us!

Stunning song! I love Kate for pretty much the same reasons i love Tori Amos. Both phemomenally talented Singers/songwriters/musicians/performers/dreamers/visionaries etc. etc. I just love the way they can capture my soul with some of the most beautiful, most.... HAUNTING music i have ever heard in my whole life, as is in evidence here! Just LISTEN to that! I am taken on a 'journey', to a 'place & time' so far removed from my current, earthly existence. Will i ever return to that place & time? I don't know. But, i can enjoy the 'memory' of it via sounds and emotions such as this... Love, peace and respect, Kate... \m/ (:o)

Mine too... when I heard that it was her worst-selling album (by the time of Hounds of Love's success), I thought, "typical me... fall in love with the one album the rest of the world had no use for..." But I still feel that songs like this one had a lot of depth. You don't find this everywhere.

In the twenty years that's passed since 'The Sensual World', the lady has only released two albums, making her very much the opposite of prolific.
If I'm not misremembering, in one of the few interviews she did in conjunction with the release of 'Aerial', she found the word 'cherished' as being a 'just lovely' description of herself.

Really don't know what it is about Kate. It seems to be a very real, emotive love which has grown deeper over the years. I'd liken it to a blending of the listener into the music, for which no other artist has the same impact ... and I love many artists from many different and diverse styles. Thank fuck Kate is there, she is a transport of delight; a reminder that there is an awakening on other levels of conciousness

Yes, to a rosegrowingold. Yes. Because she was organic. Because she wanted to. Because there were no videos to watch and because she was young. She made it up with her best honest intentions. And some who have loved her said, "But Tori Amos tours!" , Kate Bush chipped away and chipped away and blocked off the world to chip away some more at her craft and there it is. Done." Thanks to Videobeat in Evanston Illinois for having her vids but Kate is Kate and there is no other. Timeless yet then,

I've been a fan of this lady for 31 years now (wow I'm old!) and was lucky enough to attend one of her live performances (for the first time in 35 years!) at Hammersmith in 2014. I actually initially created my UA-cam channel 5 years ago so I could watch all of her videos, which I hadn't seen for many years, and it grew to other artists from there on.
I'm also quite a fan of Steven Wilson too...he's kind of like the male version of her lol! Many commentators here say he brought them here. Could someone please tell me where exactly SW mentions to check out Kate Bush...just curious? She's sadly a bit of a forgotten artist nowadays, so more new blood getting into her once ground breaking music the better!

He's an artist and producer, also guitar player for the progressive rock band Porcupine tree, and various other projects. The reason people are attracted to this song because of him is because he mentioned that Kate Bush, and this song in particular was a big inspiration for one of his tracks on his recent album "Hand. Cannot. Erase." You should check it out.

    Productive:
Capable of producing something, especially in _abundance_.
    Synonyms:
    prolific
    fertile
    fruitful
What can be said about this, is that Kate herself has done very little to deserve the epithet 'prolific', even if she should inspire other artists to produce work of abundance.
Woody Allen makes one film per year.
    He's prolific.

@claude1918 I like your technical observations of this amazing song! I hadn't paid much attention to the sighs before! Reminds me of the last lines of a poem by Count Louis Hamon (Cheiro) called 'If Only We Knew':
Regrets are useless and tears are blind
And empty words can no past undo
It's no good sighing - "I'd have been more kind
If I only knew - If I only knew!"

Incidentally, a loose woman could actually rightfully be called prolific.
    I never thought about that.
Calling Kate Bush prolific is a bit like referring to her as 'that blonde woman'.
