Producer
- Comes up with the finances.
- Creative control over the movie i.e. story line, direction the movie is going, hiring main actors, etc.
- gets rewarded/paid even after months or years the movie is is still profiting
- has a percentage in the movie.
- takes a big risk (hence financing the movie) but has great returns if the movie is profitable.

IN GENERAL: Someone who creates something of value (a.k.a. goods/services)
IN MEDIA: Person responsible for financial/admininstrative aspects, exercises supervision of production, and hires required personnel
KNOW: Producer isn't the same as Director (Person responsible for executing interpretive aspects of script), but these two have MOST IMPORTANT RELATIONSHIP in media project
KNOW: Producers attach themselves to project longer than anyone else involved
Basically, the producer makes the media project *happen*.

I learned what a real producer can do from reading "Shooting to Kill" by Christine Vachon. Her life seemed like living hell as a producer on independent films. Great book BTW!
Thanks for answering this, I've always wondered what they do. I know sometimes like in the case of Dredd (2012) the producer was talked to more than the director. And like in Tintin, Spielberg and Peter Jackson pretty much co-directed the movie I think.
And I'm British!
I always thought the producer was also the guy that had the final say in the film...the more you know!!
The interviewer mentions the Director of photography on a movie set, There is no such title, other than just being polite; there is only one Director on a movie and he is the Director of everything. Sometimes the Director of the movie will give the photographer the task of choosing camera positions etc but even then photographer is not called the Director of photography; the director is the boss of every designer, actor, and crew member on set.

Transformers 123 has documentaries all on youtube you can watch and see how they are made. One of my fave moments was in the 3rd movie a stunt driver crashed a 500, 000 car and bay took it well. Producers added their input also.

As far as MoS goes, Nolan himself said he wasn't involved past pre-production.
Mozts1 That's interesting because Snyder & Goyer had to pitch the idea of Kal killing Zod because Superman supposedly wouldn't do that even though he has killed in the comics but that's for a different argument. Point I'm making is that they had to get Nolan on board with that idea? Why? Now that could've happened during the pre-production stage but I think he had more to do with it that just that stage.
Exactly... like people say Bay had some imaginary full creative control over TMNT... when he only visited the TMNT set once... people always get blamed for shit they don't do.

They did, Producer can do anything, normally the main producer is the one who started up the movie, hired the director, writers, etc.. then you can have like associated producers that take care of casting, executive producers that take care of the people taking care of casting, etc.. you can even be a producer like they said, by doing nothing, just introducing people to each other, it's a strange thing because it has the same name no matter the task

Man of Steel did have the same flavor as the Dark Knight Trilogy. Downbeat, somber, multiple subplots, color washed. Good or bad, they were linked by the tone.

And that is not that much easy , first of all you have to earn so much money to start and to give money to your employees and fund films and then there is risk to not having attention from audience and in result it becomes very stressful, so do it if you passionately wanna do with calculated risks, you commented 6 years ago, how it's going??
