When I met Tom and Mark, I had no idea that they were both extremely tall. It's funny looking at Tom with Les Pauls because they look like guitar hero guitars on him.
@@anndynegative This must have been perhaps 2002 or 2003. They were funny, it was the Mark Tom and Travis album time period. I just remember thinking they were like, average height seeing them on tv. Meanwhile Tom is like 6'4.
various sources indicate mark is between 5’11” and 6’2” but I’m pretty sure it’s more well known that Tom is 6’4” that’s why some of his guitars are huge
1:41 i am 99.99% sure that that photo was taken in 2003. in mark hoppus' day in the life video at one point they are in the studio recording asthenia and you can see tom delonge playing that guitar. the grainy phot is just a screenshot from that video
That's true. These Jr Teles are the hidden secret of the 90s punk guitar tone (Blink182 / Sum41 and many more). Had two of these. An original from 1994 and one from 1998 with the different pickguard. Mark Hoppus revealed this several years ago in an instagram post. But, the main guitar you heard on Angels and Airwaves first album and later tracks is the Koa Strat. Mahogany body (sandwich with rosewood layer and Koa top) and instead of a humbucker a Seymour Duncan lipstick pickup. Own one as well with Mahogany body and a lipstick in the bridge as only pickup and it sounds incredibly good. There is another video on youtube where someone speaks about the guitars Tom has used over the years. But he was wrong with this bridge pickup as he mentioned that this will be some kind of a Dimarzio FS-1 but obviously it's not.
Watching the Start the Machine doc, Tom's main guitars on whisper were his Gibson signature, a Les Paul with P90s, a couple of teles, and yes, the natural strat
I heard Tom used his Gibson red wine Les Paul for Rhythm tracks, (smooth punch and thick palm mutes and power chords) and the Telecaster you have in that picture, for the leads which sound a little twangier. Dysentery Gary intro, lead for Dumpweed, Adams Song clean, etc.
On The Dream Walker they used bunch of different guitars. Gibson LP Special Double Cut (P90s as well), Rickenbacker, Fender Eric Johnson Strat and his 335. What I found very interesting is that he/Ilan use the Mike Dirnt Bass. Tried some and have to agree that these Mexican Dirnt Basses sound really really good mainly because of the 59 Custom Shop pickup.
Jerry actually had Tele Jrs (2 P-90s sorry thought it was a single) that Tom was said to have used (likely on cleans) but most things point to Tom using a Les Paul with PAF humbuckers for most of EOTS.
You're probably right as there's a lot more evidence of Tom using Les Pauls. Still, it could always be a mix of guitars that were multi tracked (like the explorer in the one photo)
@@anndynegative oh totally. It would not surprise me at all if the intro to STFTK or WMAA were done on the Tele Jrs. Hard to say with the heavier riffs but P90s can handle distortion well just ask Jim Adkins and Billie Joe Armstrong so it’s entirely possible. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were used more prominently on TOYPAJ.
@@clfnole absolutely. Jerry was a master of guitar yones. I'd be super curious to see what was used for Box Car Racer, but I haven't found much documentation
@@anndynegative so I spoke with someone that had a bit of knowledge on that. Not sure on guitars but a Diesel VH4 does the heavy lifting. Also reportedly used were a Hiwatt and a modded Marshall. You would have to thinking blending was involved per usual.
I remember reading an interview in a guitar magazine, and Tom said in the studio he used his Mesa, Marshall for gain, and a Dumble for his clean tone. I think it was for Take off your pants.
This is so true. Usually "sponsorships" only apply to what people see, so guitarists will only play their signature guitar on stage, but record with whatever will get the right tone for the song
I thought it was common knowledge that he never used his Strat in the studio... Everyone knows Tom's Strat is great in a live environment however it doesn't sound as great in the studio due to the Invader being such a high output pickup. I didn't realise people actually thought he used the Strat in the studio.
It's more interesting to learn about the use of teles and others that aren't les Pauls for me. Looking through some of Jerry's collection, he had some wild guitars and it's fun to speculate what was used
I discovered you a while back because of Danny Gonzalez. I now watch this channel more than Danny's. I still love his channel. I just love this one too. Im glad we have someone like you teaching the next generation the fundamentals of rock. Thank you, Andy-.
makes sense. i don't think you get the kind of note definition heard on a bunch of that album from an invader pickup...but whatever. i'd take a p90 pickup over an invader anytime...
Tom stated 20+ years ago he used Jerry’s guitars and equipment on enema it’s nothing new but I guess if ur just getting into blink you wouldn’t know. Toms strat is a great guitar for live but not the greatest for The studio.
It's "cannot be overstated" - not understated. If you say something cannot be understated, then everything you say is an overstatement, meaning it's worthless.

That's so cool that you met them! How was it? I think that's why Tom said he switched to ES335s, because they didn't feel like toy guitars

Anyone with ears can tell that EOTS and TOYPAJ are not recorded with distorted Invader guitars. They absolutely have that clean Tele twang.

The picture of Tom with the tele is from the making of the self titled album documentary
AHHHH, interesting!
Correct! There's footage of him using it to record the track "Asthenia".
Just checked again. Mark Hoppus revealed this "secret" on the 23rd of October 2010 in a blogspot post.
I remember reading an interview in a guitar magazine, and Tom said in the studio he used his Mesa, Marshall for gain, and a Dumble for his clean tone. I think it was for Take off your pants.
Yea he def used Marshall & Mesa, didn't know about the dumble tho... that's rad!
Many bands use different guitars studios eg led zep using telecasters recording yet using les pauls on stage

Yup - j mascis never records on a jazzmaster or with a big muff

@@anndynegative No doubt man, Jerry was and will always be a legend. What I would give to work with him on music :(
I thought he used the strat in studio
This is an awesome video! Jerry Finn is my all time favorite producer. What a legend.
Anyone who thinks artists primarily use their signature instruments in-studio just doesn’t know how music is created.
Exactly
"Who is Jerry Finn?" how dare you
I don't assume that everyone knows who he was

I once read Tom used a Gothic Explorer for ‘Give Me One Good Reason’ on TOYPAJ. Not sure of the truth of that though.
That's so cool! I wonder if there are any pictures
The grainy photo of Tom with the tele jr is obviously from the untitled sessions. 100%
You're probably right
Well I wasn't expecting to see my guitars or hear my name on here :), not to mention my ghostbusters bed sheets!

It's pretty cool to see one of the actual guitars from Jerry's collection surface tho!

Incorrect, enema was recorded on a gibson les paul that was gifted to him by a friend at gibson.
That's very possible. Tho pictures of him using the tele during the recording have since surfaced. He used a lot of guitars in the studio
