    When I met Tom and Mark, I had no idea that they were both extremely tall. It's funny looking at Tom with Les Pauls because they look like guitar hero guitars on him.

      That's so cool that you met them! How was it? I think that's why Tom said he switched to ES335s, because they didn't feel like toy guitars

      @@anndynegative This must have been perhaps 2002 or 2003. They were funny, it was the Mark Tom and Travis album time period. I just remember thinking they were like, average height seeing them on tv. Meanwhile Tom is like 6'4.

      various sources indicate mark is between 5’11” and 6’2” but I’m pretty sure it’s more well known that Tom is 6’4” that’s why some of his guitars are huge

    Anyone with ears can tell that EOTS and TOYPAJ are not recorded with distorted Invader guitars. They absolutely have that clean Tele twang.

    1:41 i am 99.99% sure that that photo was taken in 2003. in mark hoppus' day in the life video at one point they are in the studio recording asthenia and you can see tom delonge playing that guitar. the grainy phot is just a screenshot from that video

    That's true. These Jr Teles are the hidden secret of the 90s punk guitar tone (Blink182 / Sum41 and many more). Had two of these. An original from 1994 and one from 1998 with the different pickguard. Mark Hoppus revealed this several years ago in an instagram post. But, the main guitar you heard on Angels and Airwaves first album and later tracks is the Koa Strat. Mahogany body (sandwich with rosewood layer and Koa top) and instead of a humbucker a Seymour Duncan lipstick pickup. Own one as well with Mahogany body and a lipstick in the bridge as only pickup and it sounds incredibly good. There is another video on youtube where someone speaks about the guitars Tom has used over the years. But he was wrong with this bridge pickup as he mentioned that this will be some kind of a Dimarzio FS-1 but obviously it's not.

      Watching the Start the Machine doc, Tom's main guitars on whisper were his Gibson signature, a Les Paul with P90s, a couple of teles, and yes, the natural strat

    I heard Tom used his Gibson red wine Les Paul for Rhythm tracks, (smooth punch and thick palm mutes and power chords) and the Telecaster you have in that picture, for the leads which sound a little twangier. Dysentery Gary intro, lead for Dumpweed, Adams Song clean, etc.

  • @CustomChris
    @CustomChris Рік тому +2

    On The Dream Walker they used bunch of different guitars. Gibson LP Special Double Cut (P90s as well), Rickenbacker, Fender Eric Johnson Strat and his 335. What I found very interesting is that he/Ilan use the Mike Dirnt Bass. Tried some and have to agree that these Mexican Dirnt Basses sound really really good mainly because of the 59 Custom Shop pickup.

    Jerry actually had Tele Jrs (2 P-90s sorry thought it was a single) that Tom was said to have used (likely on cleans) but most things point to Tom using a Les Paul with PAF humbuckers for most of EOTS.

    • @anndynegative
      @anndynegative  Рік тому +3

      You're probably right as there's a lot more evidence of Tom using Les Pauls. Still, it could always be a mix of guitars that were multi tracked (like the explorer in the one photo)

    • @clfnole
      @clfnole Рік тому

      @@anndynegative oh totally. It would not surprise me at all if the intro to STFTK or WMAA were done on the Tele Jrs. Hard to say with the heavier riffs but P90s can handle distortion well just ask Jim Adkins and Billie Joe Armstrong so it’s entirely possible. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were used more prominently on TOYPAJ.

      @@anndynegative so I spoke with someone that had a bit of knowledge on that. Not sure on guitars but a Diesel VH4 does the heavy lifting. Also reportedly used were a Hiwatt and a modded Marshall. You would have to thinking blending was involved per usual.

    • @anndynegative
      @anndynegative  Рік тому +2

      This is so true. Usually "sponsorships" only apply to what people see, so guitarists will only play their signature guitar on stage, but record with whatever will get the right tone for the song

    I thought it was common knowledge that he never used his Strat in the studio... Everyone knows Tom's Strat is great in a live environment however it doesn't sound as great in the studio due to the Invader being such a high output pickup. I didn't realise people actually thought he used the Strat in the studio.
