Curving arrows with a war bow

- It always brings me joy when a trick is doable with regular gear! It just hits different to modded shots 😁
(Not everything we do as trick shooters would hold up in a combat scenario, but I will always at least try to be open about the downsides!)
If you want to watch some videos explaining the technique for these shots, (or if you just want to support me) check out my patreon:

Bow: MR Bows Tiron 126lb@32"
String: Freelance Archery
Arrows: Alibow Manchu Arrows
A technique like this might be more useful as an intimidation tool than as an actual attack. You might not hit a target around a blind corner or might not pierce their armor, but you sure as hell will scare the crap out of them, especially if they have no archery training themselves.
Intimidation is a useful asset for sure! It all depends on having obstacles in the right places though! Many historical battles took place in fairly open environments, so this would very much be a niche shot
@@blumineck For sure. But fun to imagine! Nice video!
@@blumineckBut you could for example shoot an enemy who is currently fighting an allied infantry soldier, right?
@@DuelistFencing maybe in a skirmish, but but not in a pitched battle- infantry tended to fight in dense formations
Just aim for the eyes :')
Possible, practical, and repeatable. Important points!
Imagine taking out an unarmored lord or commander by curving the arrow around one of his guards. The panic it would cause. Also, great way to deliver a message arrow, without them knowing where the shot came from. "Arrows fly straight, so he must be over there!"
Not practical in irl/historical settings, but for fantasy/sci-fi, the weakness of the impact is why you start investing in explosive tips for your arrows. 😉
If the stars are aligned… I would 100% take the shot. Good advice for life, too. I’ll take this man as a motivational speaker any day. 🥰
Haha thank you! As a great fictional archer once said: "you miss 100% of the shots you don't take"
I'd say it can also be an element of "non-standard success requirement". If the goal is simply to deliver some kind of small payload to a space that is directly inaccessible, it gains added practicality. Like some Hawkeye BS. Deliver a tracker, paint a target, deliver a message. Or even the fairly straight-forward aim of "flaming arrow into a waiting explosive from behind cover".
Oh for sure! 😁 like I said, if the stars align
You could do it just for the intimidation: "You aren't safe behind that cover!"
Yeh, even if it isn't especially deadly, it seems good enough for suppression and bullying someone around in the right situation. Also with gimmicky things like grenade/hornet/etc. arrows, what really matters is just getting the warhead where you want it...
If you've got enough arrows spare for suppression shots, then absolutely!
For me it is like shuriken jutsu/knife throwing or jumping and spinning kicks. These techniques are very difficult to master, they require a lifetime of training but if you are dedicated to do this even if in 99% situation you will stick to the simplest and most effective techniques at the end you only have to need it once to make a difference and create a surprising effect
In my opinion this is how it works
....weeb
to play devil's advocate technically a good jump kick is good to knock someone off a horse. It is quite situational though
@@rowanfynn6518 Yeah I totally agree, even in MMA fight you see that kind of thing very often, because it is surprising and unexpected.
But what is common with archery trickshot is the comparison between the amount of training and the result.
Still I think a warrior who has dedicated his life to master his art will perform this.
I'm inclined to agree. If I was going into battle, I'd want to be really good at regular shooting, but if I could also do speed shooting and other niche techniques, then it would give me some more options in a pinch
@@rowanfynn6518 Off a horse? You'd have to have a supernaturally good jump kick, and they'd better not be armed, (Saber against leg is an encounter with a rather predictable ending), but it's an amusing concept.
Great video! In Deep Rock Galactic, the scouts crossbow can shoot (among many wild trick bolts) special "Banshee Module" whistle bolts which, as far as I can tell, just have a whistle on them so they make a scary scream noise as they fly at a target, and it inflicts an AOE fear effect. Seems super cool to me, I'd be interested to see if you could come up with some kinda "screaming banshee" trick arrow that works with your bow. Whatever you find, I think you and your channel are really really cool :)
Noisemaker arrows were a thing historically, like the Japanese kabura-ya, which had a ritual purpose but were also used to deliver messages since the noise could allow you to more easily find where the arrow landed.
signal arrows were commonly used already, but they arent very effective heads for damage
Screaming arrows are real, a quick search will find you tons of videos.
Issue is the head shapes needed for good sound make them bad against even light armor.
There's a Korean movie named "War of the Arrows" (2011) where the protagonist is able to curve his arrows, which I thought was really cool. Thanks for demonstrating that it is possible and, with the right equipment, it is practical.
I would like to see a second camera placed at the target dummies to show the arrows hitting them.
I did try to show multiple angles for these shots!
I instinctively winced when he pointed the bow at the camera before remembering a) I was watching this on my phone and b) he probably set up a camera beforehand so there was no one holding it.
Maybe not super war practical, but if you can shoot someone hiding behind a tree, even if it's not a killing shot but just to flush them out of cover, I think a lot of medieval bigwigs would find that worth investing in. Could be a sort of specialist archer, just mix a couple into a regiment to demonstrate to the enemy hiding won't prevent getting hit.
I know it’s not as effective as a straight up shot, but a warbow curving shot that can still injure an exposed bit of skin is terrifying! One for the rouge rolling advantage on attacks to try.
"If I had the chance to shoot someone around an obstacle, I would 100% take the shot."
Alright, note to self : Always stand in direct eyeshot of this man
I suddenly need to write something with a really good archer character and have them kill something behind a barrier. That’s so sick
In a real battle you also have to keep in mind how much stamina you use and don't hurt yourself trying to do anything fancy or to fast
That's very true! Many archery tactics were intended to be repeatable over long periods of time!
That said, faster shooting is a useful skill if it can get you out of a tight corner when needed
This is gold, thank you very much ❤
If I'm hiding around a corner, and my armor got hit by an arrow (even with no damage) I would know I was fighting archery gods and give up then and there. Lol
The bard is at it again
Nice little mantra there, "Possible, practical and repeatable ". Might have to use that in other parts of life!
As always, an entertaining and informative vid. 😸 Nice to know curved shots are worth doing in the right circumstances. Even a glancing hit might be enough depending on circumstances!
Popular media seems to deal in sort of abstract ideals of things, rather than mucking about with physics. Like, a bow's purpose is to shoot arrows, therefore it does. An arrow's purpose is to pierce a target, therefore it does. Energy, friction, gravity, all these mechanical ideas can go suck eggs.
sometimes you just need to break concentration and a lil bonk is enough
God, I just love your vibes 💔
Thank you!
I still don't know how the sideways draw makes it curve but it looks cool af!
Possible, practical and repeatable, for a look that's both stylish and practical! #IYKYK
Yes! Arrow science!! For when you absolutely, positively need to knock the poisoned chalice out of your liege's hand without breaking stealth.
What are the mechanics of wonking the arrow down the string actually curving it?
I'm LEARNING
Okay so in a war battlefield its no good, but Archers/rouges shouldn't be on the front lines anyway. So on sneaky spy stealth missions, special situation trick shots could be a regular asset. You don't have to expose yourself while taking out an enemy around the corner. Or you can send your inside man/damsel in distress a note on an arrow even when a straight shot to their room isn't perfectly available. Maybe you could even confuse a group of guards on where your shots are coming from giving you more time to pick them all off before the actually find you.
If one were to use poisoned tips tho.... Well... I see this working for a very particular build... 😈
I was just looking for your videos, lol
TIRON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You could draw it vertical to curve down and hit someone behind cover with a lot more power than a side shot
I feel like this would mostly be used to scare the crap out of someone in a situation where they're hiding behind an object or corner like it might not cause that much damage, but if you're trying to flush them out you'd have the time to mess about with less efficient techniques and pull out those weird arrows that are only used for one thing.
Commenting on all of your videos until you tell me where you get those tunics
Where is your shirt from? It looks really cool and fantasy! I need more asymmetric clothes lol
Im a huge fan of archery and looking up places in Finland to start
Where did you buy your bow?
Where did you get the 120lb recurve bow, im looking to get one
But can you make an arrow complete a full circle though. J/k
This whole channel makes me question my sexuality a little
Not me.😂
yeah, he's kinda hot ngl
I'm not questioning mine, I already knew the awnser.
@@lordgatopro it was the wee wink that got me hahaha
Might not be effective but it is cool.
Arrows could surely be modified to weaponise trick shots i.e. explosive arrows or vapor arrows.
But then that adds weight
Despite how tech has changed arrows fundamentally stay the same
Balancing the weight of the arrow with the power of the bow.
@@mk_gamíng0609 true. i guess you'd have to use some kind of specific material combo (a mx of different densities) to create matching weight maybe
But Lars Anderson said...
I thought you need to be a Schwarzenegger-built guy to use a 120 lbs bow.
What kind of bows do you use
If you are good enough that you could aim for an eye...
Are... Are you Tom Scott's nephew or something
Is the Bioneer your dad?
Bro you can dance, shoot, got strong af muscles, is there anything your not good at?!
I feel like I can trust you because you look like an elf
hop off the fence
As others have pointed out, you don’t just go “that’s not how it’s 100% done irl so it’s bad” when talking about weird techniques or arrow gimmicks, you actually try your best to make it work, while still being realistic with their upsides and downsides. You’re easily my favorite medieval weapon UA-camr!
Thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoy this stuff, because I love making them!
In the past days you've showed up several times in my recommendations. I have no idea who you are or why you seem to have an endless amount of bows but the videos are really cool. Maybe I should get myself a bow as well. Great videos.
You should! Archery is fun.
I can recommend it for sure!
He’s so cool!!

“I can get a pretty dramatic curve off a 50lbs bow…” Me, struggling with 24lbs: “You what now?”
In my defence, I've been at this for a while
Learning to activate the correct muscles, and training them, takes time. I've taught quite a few large, strong men how to shoot, and they have issues at about 30lb in the beginning.
I highly recommend having a proper coach to help out with form. Biomechanics is everything.
That said, unless you need a heavier bow for a specific purpose. 24lbs is plenty and draw weight should never be confused with skill.
@@PXCharon absolutely true! Heavy draw weights are mostly a bragging rights thing (or a historical comparisons thing, which is why I'm learning them). But I have a lot more fun shooting mid weights than with the really heavy ones
The bow I practice with is a 20 lb, but it's a cheap compound and right handed (I'm a lefty, which is why I enjoy watching this channel so much). Id like a recurve, but it's difficult getting one where I'm at.
I had bought a 60 lb compound that was left handed but I could barely draw it and had to be quite serious about pulling the string back.
Sometimes the shot isn't about doing damage as much as what it causes them to do. Simply the fear of being hit behind an obstacles can be enough to cause a mistake. Also, it can force them to move, or their horse.
Not something you'd do often, but in the right circumstances it could be quite effective.
Your neighbours must love looking at their windows everyday to see you jumping on poles and shooting arrows upside down
But it will definitely surprise them! That could be worth something, in addition to the confidence boost of (maybe) actually making the shot.
I love these explanations!
Thank you!
Trick or not it's pretty cool to see done in reality
It's very fun to do!
Isnt owning a bow very illegal in the UK
I wouldn't expect people to carry modified arrows "just in case", but if it were practical to modify an arrow on the fly though, that could change things in that scenario imo. I will say, very unlikely in historical context, but in a higher tech or high magic scenario that can modify the shape of the arrow and the way it does damage (a curvy arrow that explodes on impact, shocks or releases gas is about as good as a straight shot on the chest), I could imagine it being more standard in battle.
I would take the curved shot solely to scare the opponent out of cover if I had the opportunity
Gee, what online archer would be so insecure or egotistical to distort facts for clout? (cough) Lars and shadiversity (cough)
The Tom Scott of archery.
i was thinking the exact same thing at the end
@blumineck Question: In the videos I've seen you do all these trick/ tactic shots with a standard bow/ recurve. But what about Compound bow like in the TV Series Arrow, is it possible to do any of these things you've covered with a more modern high-tech style bow? I'm curious to see if any of these are possible or just fun Hollywood scenes.
...so, what you're saying is: Shoot them with a curving arrow to distract, then parkour your way around the obstacle and loose a deathly arrow as you leap through the air.
Noted!
In Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, when Robin bites the edge of a feather from an arrow and notches two together at the same time and fires, he strikes both enemies, is that likely to not actually work IRL? Just curious 🤷🏼♀️ not trying to start a war in the comments 😅💕
or you could just side-step
Really interesting!
Get this man in touch with the guys doing animations for Legend of Vox Machina.
Your videos are all short and sweet. I'd love you to do a video one time for wannabe archers on, what type of bow one should start with. It is so daunting looking are so many options and types. How did you start? Either way keep up the good content ❤
I just hope the guy behind the obstacle isn't holding a glock
well hes not gonna be able to curve a bullet the way you can curve an arrow so id say we're still pretty safe as long as we can KEEP him behind that obstacle
If the arrow itself doesn't need to do much damage but just needs to deliver something, this could be really useful. I'm thinking messages tied around the shaft (the curving arrow is unlikely to injure an armored recipient), or even dangerous stuff. Fantasy applications could include exploding arrows, lethal even without needing to hit the target.
100%
I was wondering: Do you know how to make a good strong bow out of something like trees? It would be interesting to know.
Wow, the algo has been feeding me those turning arrow trick shots, then your amazing videos. Finally it gave me this that concludes it for me. Still gonna try to do trick shots but atleast I now know how useless it will be. Also just realized why all of those other videos uses fragile or weaken targets .
My face when that first arrow goes "fwonnggg!" off in a different direction mid-flight. 😮
Should we be concerned that you left "…and if I had a good reason to shoot at them" off that list? 😉
"For the benefit of the jury, would you please explain __why__ you were shooting arrows at the deceased?" "Well he just made such a good target…”
Lots of cultures use powerful bows with a short sideways draw. Just to point out that the sideways draw does not have to mean a less powerful draw, it depends what the bow was made to do. If the bow maxes out at a 20 inch draw, then you will not be able to make it more powerful by holding it vertically.
Use it to shoot around the knight and hit the wizard who isn't wearing armor.
Are bows made to standardised sizes and would there be any noticable benefit to have a bow custom made for your specific body proportions?
You definitely want a bow that matches your most comfortable draw length. Shorter bows generally will be more efficient, but the arrow being pushed by the string for a longer time can give it more speed. If the bow has too short of a draw, it can feel like it is cramping you, if the bow has a longer draw than what is comfortable for you, then you loose efficiency. Some styles use the feeling of the bow reaching its max draw as a trigger point...
I realized when you switched to the war bow in this video that you don't use an arm guard, and it hurts my arm just thinking about it.
You should not be hitting your arm if you draw the bow the right way. You can find videos of pros showing you how to avoid it.
