when it comes to Sabbath's ballads, "Changes" is generally considered their greatest and if you haven't heard it you should. But "Planet Caravan" is so beautiful too that even Megadeth covered it.
They were so ahead of their time that they invented heavy metal in 1970 and people in the contemporary doom metal and stoner rock genres are still heavily influenced by their early '70s work.
They were experimenting at the time putting their voices through old synthesizers. It's obvious in Iron Man but a synthesizer is also providing the wobble and weirdness of the voice here - it was indeed ground breaking
why?why?why? make this statement as if its fact.... the intro to "Iron Man" was achieved by having Ozzy Osbourne sing through a spinning fan. When the Guitar Hero team wanted to record a cover of the song, they bought the same model of fan through Craigslist to duplicate the effect. And they used a Leslie speaker to achieve the vocals' treble and vibration effects on Planet Caravan.
@@colyzee I read that they were using a VCS3 synth with its ring mod capabilities to alter the voice making it robotic at fast speeds and more warbly at slower speeds
Break out the tarot cards and bead curtains! It's way cool that you find the sound of "Planet Caravan" decades ahead of its time, but from my perspective it's one of their more sixties sounding tunes, a couple steps behind its times. On the record it serves as the lush interlude between the bombast of "Paranoid" and "Iron Man", two songs with sounds ahead of their time. "Planet Caravan" evokes the sound of the flower power counter culture coming out of San Francisco in the late sixties, made popular by bands like The Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead. But also, I suspect, the sounds of Peter Green era Fleetwood Mac as well as Fairport Convention and others. For a taste of that, check out Fleetwood Mac "Albatross" (1969), Strawberry Alarm Clock "Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow" (1967), Blue Cheer "Peace Of Mind" (1969), and Fairport Convention "She Moves Through The Fair" (1969).
Love this song, sounds amazing with headphones when you’re trippin’ 👍
one of the most beautiful songs of all time. was very far ahead of its time and still sounds like the future
This song in my option is one of the most underrated album cuts. This production is immaculate 🔥
True and my goodness, listening to this one for the second time made it hit even harder for me.
@@JustJammin yeah it’s a complete departure from their typical heavy metal vibe. They never really returned to this sound either. ✌️
This was off of the same album as War Pigs and Iron Man. Paranoid is the album.

Dude watch Black Sabbath live in Paris 1970 . One of the most underated bands ever .
The space race was big in 1970. So were psychedelics.
The music is good, but Ozzy shouldn't have sung it under water.
