Funny Girl was a big sensation on Broadway in the 1960s, so I guess that's why. However, because she hasn't been on Broadway since then, Barbra Streisand should've been much lower on the list. Bernadette Peters being relegated to honorable mentions is wrong.
Soooooo many issues with this list. 1) They REALLY should either make a follow-up list or they should have split the list into classic and contemporary Broadway stars. 2) WHERE are even nods for Glen Close, Sutton Foster, DEBBIE REYNOLDS, DONNA MURPHY, Sierra Boggess, Laura Osnes and a whole bunch more (AHEM, Judy Kuhn...) 3) Whoever thought Bernadette Peters only deserved an honourable nod should be taken out back and shot. NOT RIGHT!!!!! But all the names on the list deserved the acclaim. Just far too broad a list.
emmamaria truer words were never spoken. This list was made for me, and most of the classics I was expecting. But we NEED a contemporary one THIS INSTANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Whoever thought they could get away with putting Kristin there and not idina should be lined up with the poor soul who made the mistake of only putting Bernadette and lea as honourable mentions and also shot.
Bailey Bieganek Don't shoot me....but I would choose Kristin over Idina any day. And I LOVE LOVE LOVE Idina, her acting and her voice. Kristin is a FAR more consistent live performer and her vocal abilities are just astounding! Listen to "The Girl in 14G" for a reference point.
emmamaria lol I'm not going to shoot you. People are entitled to their opinions and I can't say I like idina better than Kristin because I don't know too much else of her work aside from wicked. My love of idina over her stems from my love of elphaba over Glinda, though both are incredible characters. Regardless of who thinks who is better, my fault with this list is that it gave Kristin a well-deserved spot, and it MENTIONED idina. Not even honourably mentioned her. And that is not ok, especially not if you're going by wicked as your main reference point. I agree with you on all your points; I wouldn't want to shoot such an eloquent and polite fellow UA-cam commenter!!!!
emmamaria I simply meant that putting Audra McDonald and Angela so late on this list is completely unjust. They are two of the most decorated and important actresses of their respective generations. Leaving Bernadette Peters out is also completely unfair. The woman has been given us some of the most beautiful performances to ever grace the stage. I agree that basically all the women deserve a spot up their but the order is debatable.
R Lloyd I will agree with that...please see the comment I just added myself to the general comments on this video. I just think that your wording was a bit too damning. This list is not completely hate-worthy. Just many problems with it ;)
Not to mention Barbara at number 3??? Even they said she's only been in 2 shows.... she doesn't hold a candle to Julie but surpassed her on the list??? No thanks.
Not a bad list. I think Mary Martin or Sutton Foster rank higher than Betty Buckly, and I'd move Verdon up a few notches, but if this was their list, I wouldn't nit pick.
Where is BARBARA COOK in this list?Look at the tributes she had and you will see her importance as Broadway leading ladies. Even stars like Betty Buckley ,Audra Mac Donakld and Patti LuPone who are in your list talked about her and gave a big tribute, Where are Mary Martin and Julie Andrews inthos list;MY LIST IS THIS ONE 1) ETHEL MERMAN,2) MARY MARTIN 3) ANGELA LANSBURY 4) BARBARA COOK 5) GWEN VERDON 6) CHITA RIVERA 7) JULIE ANDREWS 8) AUDRA MAC DONALD 9) PATTI LUPONE 10) BERNADETTE PETERS-BETTY BUCKLEY(TIE)
If they (possibly) consider doing a second list, it should be laid out somewhat like this... #10. Gwen Verdon #9. Sutton Foster #8. Donna Murphy #7. Laura Benanti #6. Bette Midler #5. Keli O'Hara #4. Glenn Close #3. Lea Salonga #2. Idina Menzel #1. Bernadette Peters
DEv INity Then you’re not really well versed in musical theatre 😂 she played both eponine and fontine in les miserables (which are both coveted roles) and starred in Miss Saigon (in which she got a tony). Not to mention her voicing both jasmine and Mulan.
Some of these dolls are absolute legends! We have so many incredible songstresses out there it's hard to choose. That being said. A diva is next level. Transcends the stage to become an icon and legend. A name you know whether or not they are on stage at this moment. Lansbury, Channing, Chenoweth, LuPone, Peters, Audra McDonald, O'Hara, Stretch, Merman. These are just the ones I can immediately think of without immediately going back to assign a specific role.
I was lucky enough to actually see Angela Lansbury on stage in Sweeney Todd. She was, and has always been, magnificent! (And yes, I'm a great fan of Murder, She Wrote.)
Mary Martin's was in 11 Broadway shows including being the original Nellie Forbush in South Pacific, Maria in The Sound of Music and the first musical Peter Pan. How is that only an honorable mention?
The one great diva that will always be synonymous with Broadway from the beginning to the end of time is Ethel Merman and should always reign in number one position.
I can't name like any of Barbara Streisand's songs but I can sing a lot of Julie Andrew's songs word by word, and my Bernadette as a lowly honorable mention. Preposterous!
I actually know Mrs. Barbra Streisand. My sister work with her husband and I think that she a wonderful performer. I absolutely love her as "Fanny Brice" in "Funny Girl." Honestly, she should have been number 1. She is a true broadway and film legend.
More than Idina, I miss Sutton Foster!!! Worth an honorable mention at least. Otherwise I love this list. Maybe MissMojo could do a follow up on this list?
Well you missed: Patty LuPone Idina Menzel Sutton Foster Betty Buckley Samantha Barks Jennifer Holliday All fabulous ladies who deserve a nod on this list.
I appeared with Mary Martin (Hello Dolly) and stood backstage to watch Ethel Merman in close to 100 performances of the revival of Annie Get Your Gun. Forgive me for my disdain, but several of the people who made your list were amateurs compared to these two titans who gave their LIVES to the stage. In my opinion Martin was THE NUMBER 1 GREATEST BROADWAY STAR OF ALL TIMES, for the way she made audiences adore her, even in lesser vehicles and Ms. Merman #2, a great singer but a bit of a cold performer.
Yes, she is, but she hasn't been on Broadway since the 1960s, so it makes sense that someone more prolific on stage like Chita Rivera would take the top spot.
barbra is around the world famous star ,,, for the haters here ,,, not so many as her , nobody as her actually ,,, and 50plus years of carreer , ,so respect
I know she's kinda new, but I think Phillipa Soo is going places. She played the title role in the Broadway version of Amélie, she was the original Natasha Rostova in the Off-Broadway production of Natasha, Pierre and The Great Comet of 1812 and, this is where you'll really truly remember her, she earned a TONY Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical for her role as Eliza Schuyler Hamilton in Hamilton: An American Musical.
Don't hurl insults at me for saying this, but Barbra Streisand should not be on that list. She was, as the video said, in only two productions, while women like Idina Menzel have been in more than that
Although I loved Julie and Barbra so much, no.1 should be Ethel Merman, the first lady of musical. Bernadette and Mary should have more than just an honorable mention. Barbra should be lower than Andrews since she did only one show on Broadway. And then we have a bunch of divas, Idina, Sutton, Betty, Barbara, Elaine, ...
Tough task to tackle, distilling Broadway's Finest Females into 10 slots, but your choices are admirable. I like Chita, but would not have made her #1..That is my only disagreement with your list since your historical research is quite accurate. Thumbs up!
I loved the list, but I think it's unfair to give Barbra Streisand such a high place. She had only one performance when Agela Landsbury, at number 10, had several lead roles in several successfull plays.
Agreed.....this should be top 10 20th CENTURY and top 10 21st Century. I would go with (not in order) Carol Channing, Mary Martin, Julie Andrews, Chita Rivera, Gwen Verdon, Liza Minnelli, Ethel Merman, Barbara Cook, Angela Lansbury, and instead of Streisand how about the woman she played....an actual Broadway diva: Fanny Brice! MY honorable mentions are Elaine Stritch, Rosalind Russell, Beatrice Lilly, and BEA ARTHUR! Now there are tricks here as some of the Divas truly crossed the 2 centuries....actively performing before AND after 2000. But for my 21st Century (not in order) I say Sutton Foster, Jessie Mueller , Both Idina Menzel AND Kristen Chenowith, Kelli O' Hara, Now Lea Salonga, Audra McDonald, Judy Kuhn, Bernadette and the DEFINITIVE Evita: Patti Lupone, were stars in the 20th but they're going here with MY honorable mention being Bebe Neuwirth . Feel free to blast me apart! lol
If we go back just a little further, you would find names like the great Gertrude Lawerence, and Barbara Cook. the first real Broadway diva was probably Marilyn Miller from the 1920-30's star of Ziegfield Follies, Sally, and As Thousands cheer.
I feel like this video needed a different name, because it's referred to as Top 10 Female Broadway Icons multiple times, but the official title is Top 10 Broadway Divas, and that's 2 different things.
Mary Martin honorable mention? Come on now! She’s a Broadway legend and starred right up to the end of her life! I adore Streisand and Chita but where are their South Pacific, sound of Music, Peter Pan?
I'm Barbra Streisand's biggest fan but come on. She hasn't performed in Broadway for YEARS and there are so many other actresses who have much bigger repertoires.
She's maintained the Broadway catalog and brought it into pop music for everyone. That's a good thing, but agree, she's not the quintessential Broadway diva
No disrespect Ben Lau, but how does her not performing on Broadway for years make her any less of one of the top ten divas? Would you say Michael Jordan's not one of the top ten best basketball players of all time because he doesn't play anymore? C'mon now.
Agree that Streisand belongs nowhere on the list. If for no other reason that she RUINED the movie version of "Hello, Dolly!" In fact, most of her big-screen work is unwatchable it is so bad. I believe Streisand is a completely manufactured talent.
I was thinking about it and I guess the fact that she has done like 5 film musicals and the fact that at least half of what she sings nowadays (including the most recent album) are Broadway hits. Buuuuuut still....not saying we don't love Babs and her voice like buttah, but one starring and one supporting role on Broadway just isn't quite there for this list.
You should've made a list for classic stars (Julie Andrews, Carol Channing, Liza Minelli, Bernadette Peters, etc) and then another for contemporary actresses (Audra McDonald, Kristin Chenoweth, Idina Menzel, Sierra Boggess, Laura Osnes, etc).
Katie Tucker Where would Patti Lupone fit into that list? Because that bitch has been doing leading roles since the late 70s until literally THIS year.
Lea Salonga should have been more than an honorable mention, she won a Tony for Kim in Miss Saigon, was Mei-Li in Flower Drum Song, and of course is considered by many to be the best Eponine in Les Miserables. She was Eponine in the Les Miserables 10th Anniversary Dream Cast, and Fantine in the 25th Anniversary Cast. This doesn't even count her vocal credits on the Disney films Aladdin and Mulan.
When I hear the words "Broadway Diva" the first name that pops into my head every time is Patti Lupone. She doesn't just command Broadway she is epitome of Divadom
So? Sutton's done a hell of a lot more on Broadway than Babs ever did, not to mention (as much as I love her) Kristen. Let's stop looking at how long they have been alive and look at serious CONTRIBUTION. Sutton has half this list beat. And Audra at 8? That's just horse sh*t. Audra's so much better than Chita ever saw the day to be.
@@mlchc9004 I agree Julie shouild be before Rivera who is great but isnt the best all time Broadway star;I dodntg know who made thos list but how can be out Mary Martin,Barbara Cook,Bernadettr \Peters,Gwen Verdon and ot her great Broadway ladies? Who made this list?
I agree Where are Barbara Cook,Gwen Verdon, and other great artists? Barbara influenced some of the artists that are here like Audra Mc Donald and Kristyn Chenoweth..Gwen received four Tony awards .
Why is Angela Lansbury so low and Bernadette Peters and Idina Menzel and Bette Midler not even on the list.
Yes I agree Ms.Lansbury should have been top three.
There should be "Another" Broadway Divas list.
I think people vote in their sleep 🤣
Matt R Exactly
Matt R where is Elaine page?
I'm not even that into Broadway and even I know that Bernadette Peters deserves to AT LEAST be number five. Honorable mention??? Give me a break lol.
k a y l e e I AGREE COMPLETELY SHE ORIGINATED THE WITCH IN INTO THE WOODS SO LIKE SHES QUEEN
She’s amazing
Couldn't agree more.
This so much!
She certainly deserves to be on the list before Chenowith (who is an amazing talent but...)
........no offense but why is Babs even on the list when Bernadette isn't?
i know she cant sing
@@marjanf56 she can sing come on.
Funny Girl was a big sensation on Broadway in the 1960s, so I guess that's why. However, because she hasn't been on Broadway since then, Barbra Streisand should've been much lower on the list. Bernadette Peters being relegated to honorable mentions is wrong.

emmamaria I totally agree with you, but I think that this was one of their better lists
This list is an insult to all musical theatre fans.
R Lloyd Wow. You clearly don't know anything about musical theatre to know that this isn't an insult, all of these women are Broadway legends.
Justify that statement!? The list is far too broad, I will completely agree with that, but each of these women deserve a place on this list.
emmamaria I simply meant that putting Audra McDonald and Angela so late on this list is completely unjust. They are two of the most decorated and important actresses of their respective generations. Bernadette Peters should have been in the top 10, not the honorable mentions.
IMO:
1.Ethel Merman
2.Chita Rivera
3.Angela Lansbury
4.Patti LuPone
5.Elaine Stritch
6.Gwen Verdon
7.Bernadette Peters
8.Audra McDonald
9.Carol Channing
10.Betty Buckley

This is much better. We have Gertrude Lawrence, Barbara Cook, and Mary Martin, each of whom could be credibly put in a Broadway Diva list as well.
If they (possibly) consider doing a second list, it should be laid out somewhat like this...
#10. Gwen Verdon
#9. Sutton Foster
#8. Donna Murphy
#7. Laura Benanti
#6. Bette Midler
#5. Keli O'Hara
#4. Glenn Close
#3. Lea Salonga
#2. Idina Menzel
#1. Bernadette Peters
Hadley Epstein This list is legit!
Would you consider putting Rebecca Luker on that list as an honorable mention? We don’t talk about her nearly enough!
OMG how is Lea Salonga not on this list!?
DEv INity Then you’re not really well versed in musical theatre 😂 she played both eponine and fontine in les miserables (which are both coveted roles) and starred in Miss Saigon (in which she got a tony). Not to mention her voicing both jasmine and Mulan.
What Bernadette Peter just a honorable mention?
and whats with Sutton Foster? Elaine Stritch? Idina Menzel?
Betty Buckley?
Lea Salonga and Bernadette Peters!
BETTY BUCKLEY deserves some kind of mention here.
Some of these dolls are absolute legends! We have so many incredible songstresses out there it's hard to choose.
That being said. A diva is next level. Transcends the stage to become an icon and legend. A name you know whether or not they are on stage at this moment.

Audra McDonald takes my breath away. Her voice is awesome and uplifting.
I was lucky enough to actually see Angela Lansbury on stage in Sweeney Todd. She was, and has always been, magnificent! (And yes, I'm a great fan of Murder, She Wrote.)
Ms. Mojo is way off base. No mention of Elaine Stritch....one of the last great broadway dames.
Can you please do a Top 10 Male Broadway Stars countdown video as well if possible?
Well, they might be Diva's (and a lot of names missing) but only one Queen and that is Julie Andrews..
Love me some Julie but she only did 4 shows with no Tony wins or Specials! She more of a movie diva than a Broadway diva!
I came here for Julie Andrews
Bella Boo Me too! Am sticking to my own list with Julie topmost # ONE!
I can't name like any of Barbara Streisand's songs but I can sing a lot of Julie Andrew's songs word by word, and my Bernadette as a lowly honorable mention. Preposterous!
Her name is "Barbra"😂
Not even "People" ?
Nobody can roller skate like Barbra.
Well that says more about you than it actually does about Streisand's career chief!
This list is going to be horribly inaccurate but yay it exists!
Yah, and what about Laura Benanti? Hope they make another one
I actually know Mrs. Barbra Streisand. My sister work with her husband and I think that she a wonderful performer. I absolutely love her as "Fanny Brice" in "Funny Girl." Honestly, she should have been number 1. She is a true broadway and film legend.
Classic:
5. Liza Minelli
4. Angela Lansbury
3. Mary Martin
2. Judy Garland/Bernadette Peters
1. Julie Andrews
Contemporary:
5. Lea Salonga
4. Kristin Chenoweth
3. Patti Lupone
2. Bette Midler
1. Idina Menzel
Feel like Sutton Foster also deserved an HM, along with Idina Menzel.
lea salonga??
When anyone thinks of Broadway they think of anyone but Streisand!
More than Idina, I miss Sutton Foster!!! Worth an honorable mention at least. Otherwise I love this list. Maybe MissMojo could do a follow up on this list?
Ethel Merman "POWER" And funny. Julie perfection, range, and goofy.
I'm surprised Sutton Foster was nowhere on this list.
IDINA MENZEL?!?!
Well you missed:
Patty LuPone
Idina Menzel
Sutton Foster
Betty Buckley
Samantha Barks
Jennifer Holliday
All fabulous ladies who deserve a nod on this list.
Patti LuPone DID make the list.
So..... if you play Rose and/or Mrs. Lovett , you get on the list😂😂
Chita is still special even today!
This is amazing! 😮
Watchmojo is trying to start a war apparently
They're trying to get views and get us to comment... so they made this list ridiculous.
Agreed about PLP.
Lea Salonga will always be one of the best and finest. She is just an honorable mention here. Of course because she's Asian.
Patti should be number one.
Nope. Tried to take this seriously but the fact that Babs is not only on here but is number 2. The person who made this list was just bored
Who the hell made this list and only put Peters as an HONORABLE MENTION?! Kick Striesand out of there if you have to, Bernadette Peters is a LEGEND!
Barbra Streisand should have been number one. She's s legend
Yes, she is, but she hasn't been on Broadway since the 1960s, so it makes sense that someone more prolific on stage like Chita Rivera would take the top spot.
Angela Lansbury is 10????
Imagine them all together and directing this!
No one tell Rachel Berry that Pattie only made #6
Kinda very upset that Judy was not mentioned
Judy Garland never really acted in any Broadway productions. She mainly just did concerts in Broadway venues like the Palace Theater.
barbra is around the world famous star ,,, for the haters here ,,, not so many as her , nobody as her actually ,,, and 50plus years of carreer , ,so respect
What about Sierra Boggess, Renee Elis Goldsbery, Pippa Soo, and Jasmine Cephas Jones?
Their careers aren't old enough for them to be considered true Broadway divas.
I know she's kinda new, but I think Phillipa Soo is going places. She played the title role in the Broadway version of Amélie, she was the original Natasha Rostova in the Off-Broadway production of Natasha, Pierre and The Great Comet of 1812 and, this is where you'll really truly remember her, she earned a TONY Award nomination for Best Actress in a Musical for her role as Eliza Schuyler Hamilton in Hamilton: An American Musical.
you had better be making a second list with Idina Menzel as number one!
Mary Martin should be number 1. She originated many singular roles that others played in the movies.
Gwen Verdon,Gwen Verdon!Five nominations for best actress female,4 wins!
This needs to be split into classic and contemporary categories
Don't hurl insults at me for saying this, but Barbra Streisand should not be on that list. She was, as the video said, in only two productions, while women like Idina Menzel have been in more than that

Tough task to tackle, distilling Broadway's Finest Females into 10 slots, but your choices are admirable. I like Chita, but would not have made her #1..That is my only disagreement with your list since your historical research is quite accurate. Thumbs up!
Whoever put this list together knows absolutely nothing about Broadway.
I loved the list, but I think it's unfair to give Barbra Streisand such a high place. She had only one performance when Agela Landsbury, at number 10, had several lead roles in several successfull plays.
Barbta striesand😍
Agreed.....this should be top 10 20th CENTURY and top 10 21st Century. I would go with (not in order) Carol Channing, Mary Martin, Julie Andrews, Chita Rivera, Gwen Verdon, Liza Minnelli, Ethel Merman, Barbara Cook, Angela Lansbury, and instead of Streisand how about the woman she played....an actual Broadway diva: Fanny Brice! I don't think the person who made this list even knows who Barbara Cook even is... they should redo this list
If we go back just a little further, you would find names like the great Gertrude Lawerence, and Barbara Cook. the first real Broadway diva was probably Marilyn Miller from the 1920-30's star of Ziegfield Follies, Sally, and As Thousands cheer.
RIP Carol Channing.
Julie Andrews did NOT do 'The Sound of Music' before Eliza Doolittle! Someone needs to get their chronologies in order...
I think Bernadette should be on here with others like Carol, Angela, Barbara,
What about Idina???? Come on!!!
Audra McDonald is number 8. She’s won every Tony a Woman can physically possibly win, and she’s number 8, that is some damn bullshit!
Chita Rivera also win a second Tony for Kiss Of The Spider Woman.
Where's Elaine Stritch? 🤔
Someone has to be in the spotlight!
Barbra Streisand should've been number one on the list.
gotta say you only chose musical divas you forgot the first lady of the stage Miss Helen Hayes
Elaine Paige? Idina Menzel? Sutton Foster? Gwen Verdon?... Bernadette Peters... Honorable mention?
I feel like this video needed a different name, because it's referred to as Top 10 Female Broadway Icons multiple times, but the official title is Top 10 Broadway Divas, and that's 2 different things.

Do actors next!
Patti LuPone not being number 1 is a crime
Donna Murphy should at least be in the honorable mentions. And Angela Lansbury should be MUCH higher on the list -- say 1 or 2!
I suggested this one :)
10:00 Barbra's voice did not change one bit. Maybe got a little raspier, but it's still beautiful.
Very nice video
Bernadette Peters and Mary Martin should have been on that list in the top five
I cannot believe Bernadette isn't one of the top 10.
My personal top 5;
1. Barbra Streisand
2. Carol Channing
3. Liza Minnelli
4. Ethel Merman
5. Cher
Surprised Idina Menzel didn't get her own spot
I'm Barbra Streisand's biggest fan but come on. She hasn't performed in Broadway for YEARS and there are so many other actresses who have much bigger repertoires.
I agree i am a fan I love Barbara but not on this list again watchmojo sometimes gets confuse and base on the stardom of someone.
She's maintained the Broadway catalog and brought it into pop music for everyone. That's a good thing, but agree, she's not the quintessential Broadway diva

I looked up diva in the dictionary and it had a picture of Patti LuPone.
Yes
You should've made a list for classic stars (Julie Andrews, Carol Channing, Liza Minelli, Bernadette Peters, etc) and then another for contemporary actresses (Audra McDonald, Kristin Chenoweth, Idina Menzel, Sierra Boggess, Laura Osnes, etc).
Those last 2 would not have made the list
Katie Tucker Where would Patti Lupone fit into that list? Because that bitch has been doing leading roles since the late 70s until literally THIS year.
Katie Tucker I would put Bernadette in "contemporary" but I agree with you
There are no younger stars, they have no star quality, or great talent.
none I’m trying to work out what you’re saying because I know you’re not dumb enough to think that Kristin Chenoweth is talentless
Patti only number 6? She is the definition of broadway.
You end on that song and don't mention Elaine Stritch?! 😭
This doesn't even count her vocal credits on the Disney films Aladdin and Mulan.
can't believe she was only an honorable mention here, lol
Can't I like this more than once?!!
Tell that to Bernadette Peters who won two and originated some iconic roles like into the woods. This is a biased list.
She also won the Olivier for Miss Saigon.
I love Lea Salonga but some of the credits mentioned aren't Broadway. Just sayin;. She's def a legit Broadway diva tho.
When I hear the words "Broadway Diva" the first name that pops into my head every time is Patti Lupone. She doesn't just command Broadway she is epitome of Divadom
THIS.
Bernadette is NO runner up! ....and where is Sutton Foster!?!!
I know, right?!
Snoz Berries she hasn't been on Broadway as long as everyone else on the list.
All that yazz are you talking about Bernadette or Sutton? Because if you're talking bout Bernadette, that's just wrong
Magic_The _Cat12 I'm talking about sutton
I love Barbra, but Julie Andrews ranks above her. C'mon.
Janet Wickline I agree! No way are Streisand nor Rivera better than Julie!
Ok, how the heck was Bernadette Peters ONLY AN HONORABLE MENTION and NOT IN THE LIST?!
I know, I can't believe it either.
Where is Barbara Cook and Gwen Verdon? Flawed list for sure.
Dominique Town correct
I agree Where are Barbara Cook,Gwen Verdon, and other great artists? Barbara influenced some of the artists that are here like Audra Mc Donald and Kristyn Chenoweth..Gwen received four Tony awards .
Elaine Stritch, anyone?...
Brilliant
