American schoolteachers are secular nuns. Think about it: To become a nun, you must swear to be poor, to submit to authority, to obey numerous rules, and to give up family life. You are expected to serve a transcendent cause and to feel guilty for any shortcoming in serving that cause. Isn't that a teacher's life? The difference is that real nuns have free housing, free food (at regular mealtimes!), and the consolations of religion.
I am so surprised to learn that you quit teaching. I still remember that, two years ago, when I was looking for a job, I found your video on UA-cam and then followed your advice to apply for a substitute position, eventually becoming a full-time teacher. I believe your UA-cam content was very helpful in guiding me toward becoming a teacher in Texas. Thank you, and I wish you the best in your new job.
I’m in my first year, and I cry every other day.
My team is a clique, and I don’t fit.
My mentor is a math teacher, but I teach English.
But guess what, I’m expected to suffer in silence.
Oh no 😭 first year is always rough. Try to find another English teacher who may be willing to help you (even if they teach a different level)
join the club of the stressful high anxiety job with little pay that u have to pay your earning to buy classroom things...

Thats unfortunate we lose more teachers to such conditions. Im subbing in a blue state with strong unions, my experience is the complete opposite and teaching is actually a chill job as long as u have some thick skin. Good luck!

Totally understand! My mom was a Texas English teacher while I was growing up. I was SO happy when she was finally free & retired. Selfless work for sure. Very underappreciated by many. Thanks for your time as a teacher! :) Glad you're happier now!

I don’t agree that the behavior is not the student. I think that is a cop out and gives students an excuse to act out just because they are going through something. Think about people who commit crimes. Are their behaviors not a reflection of the person? Oh so and so had a rough childhood therefore he vandalizes, steals, commits fraud. We have a choice to make and we choose right or wrong. These kids that curses at the teachers, don’t do work, and destroys property know what they are doing. Even kindergarteners know when they are being bad but some won’t care because parents don’t care.
Okay the dating one is extremely strange 😂 I am a 26 year old female teacher and when I told my boyfriend what my career was he was very impressed. Definitely stay away from guys that say weird comments like that

I taught in NYC right out of college. Left at age 29. Took me a decade to figure out that the only thing worse than having the job was not having the job. When I came back it was a matter of financial necessity, but I got through it. It's nice to have made it to retirement, but yes, there are major sacrifices involved. I feel like I gave them way too much work for free. Perhaps, I could have been more judicious, but in the moment I just felt like it had to get done.
Thank you for sharing this. A lot of people don’t truly understand or are very ignorant to the things teachers go through on a day to day basis. To you and many teachers across the spectrum, thank you for all your hard work, patience in teaching and helping kids grow in many ways. In some cases being more than a teacher. A friend, a mentor and someone who truly cares. I’m so happy that you looked out and made the best decision for you. Good luck and wish you the best 💜

I have a question, has a student ever called you by your first name
I’m a substitute in Houston and I wish I knew that you can major in a lot of things other than education or something that may have more opportunities and still teach the subject you want if you get your certification in that area. I’m one semester away from finishing my bachelors. Although I do plan to teach, I’m going back and getting my masters in social work (completely different major than my undergrad) to have more job opportunities in case I get burnt out. Yes this!!! I never wanted to be a teacher so my major was journalism and then I got certified to teach after college. I definitely didn’t have as much as experience going into my first year as education majors did but really no first year teacher knows what they are doing 😂😂

What blows my mind some teachers dont have their masters and admin will work to make sure they are bullied out of the because it makes the rest look bad. I am not a teacher but i jave see it happen. Its crazy.

Did you work for a charter school? I am a teacher in Texas and have worked in 3 ISDs and one charter school. The charter school paid once a month. All the districts pay twice a month. Teaching is a hard job!

I worked in HR for a school district in Texas near Houston. Our teachers got paid twice a month.
I taught at houston isd.....maaaaaaaan that was the toughest 2 years. No respect except a handful. I got paid but not worth it. Took a 10k paycut 2 hours away and it was way better

This is my fifth year as a Spanish Teacher and at times it really felt like I was back in school myself with the level of respect I received from the Teachers and Administration.
Also I would be one of those Teachers that would barely drink water and I wouldn't eat breakfast or lunch. I would wait until I got home to not be judged of what I ate by the other Teachers.
#2 is the truth and I was shocked that so many adults acted like students 😂😂😂

New subscriber !!! YESSSS TEACHERS ARE SOME OF THE MESSIEST PEOPLE I KNOW MAYBE BECAUSE ITS A FEMALE DOMINATED FIELD WHICH IS PATHETIC. You spoke the truth so thanks- year 12 for me and I teach special education so I'm patient in dealing with "adults" so I can perform my best for my students who need me, but man it gets tough sometimes. Also I agree, admin can make or break a school. I have a principal certification but I'm not ready to go for an admin position yet. Good luck in your new field! Wish you all the best!

Hey Brianna. Thank you for sharing us this video. Interesting thoughts that you shared with us, especially with seeing students outside of school and how they’ll try to find out more about you online lol. So I see that you’ve taken some days off to take care of yourself which is great. I’m guessing that you write up sub plans for those days, right? Would you normally give the students like a free “work” day or do you have them actually do something with the sub? I’m a substitute teacher myself in San Antonio for MS and HS.
Hey! I actually quit teaching. But when I was a teacher I would always leave sub plans. NEVER gave them a free day because they would go crazy lol
@@byBriannaStone oh yeah i knew that. it’s just that whenever i’m covering a class, and if there isn’t really much of a plan left by the teacher, i would always make the kids do stuff anyways even if it’s just for fun lol.

It helps if you don’t give a rat’s ass. Never take any work home. Make the kids do their reading silently in class. Write your lesson plans and grade your papers at work. Don’t bother flunking anyone, and just laugh at the kid’s stupidity. Yes, most of them are stupid. But most importantly, find something better to do and quit. If necessary just walk out without giving notice. Teachers are going to be automated out of existence anyway so don’t take it too seriously.

@@byBriannaStone I quit 36 years ago after 7 years. Quit teaching to ship out with the merchant marine for 8 years then went to barber college. Cut hair for 20 years.
