Here are many causes for, the first one seems overpopulation of human beeings following destruction of natural habitats by burning and blocking traditional wanderings of the elephants. The climate change too, not enough rain. (Climate changes always in history!) Especially Botswana stopped culling for many years, so the younger elephants die at first by exhausting. POACHING is another problem in many african countries. The best answer of all gave the book ,,A GAME RANGER REMEMBERS " written by the former Chief Ranger in Kruger NP Bryce Bryden.

As agriculturists take more and more of the historic range of game, they are pushed and concentrated into areas where they are allowed; this can become a concentrated, unnatural and destructive situation. The powers that be in Africa have gradually come to understand that controlled hunting provides enormous wealth to combat poaching, feed hungry Africans, and grow the wildlife herds, including elephants. A hunting client can spend as much as a quarter of a million dollars to hunt in Africa. Previous bans on hunting, while well-meaning, were a disaster, fostering political corruption, international crime/poaching rings, and even worse losses of wildlife. People just don't understand this.

The only animals I have hunted are waterfowl. I started doing it because it pushed me out of my comfort zone, and because I eat meat. I always have, and figured if I choose to, I might as well be able to complete the entire process of "field to table". However, personally, I could never shoot an elephant. I have just assigned too much emotion and sentiments to certain animals and hesitated to watch this video. Having said that, that was about as clean of a death as a wild animal could wish for. If hunting is done, this is how it should be- with respect for the animal, with conservation in mind, giving back to communities and completed by well trained, organized, calm, ethical hunters who ensure the animal has a clean, quick, merciful death. Bravo and clean kill, gents.
Poaching on the other hand, is another story. I understand some people have no choice, but those bastards and those who support it can rot in hell.

The entire elephant was consumed and/or utilized by the locals. The only thing left after the elephant was processed was a greasy spot in the sand and the contents of the stomach. They were spread out over millions of hectares & now are confined to small areas that can't handle the numbers...its a totally man-made problem & man has to be the solution by controlling elephant numbers as they have few natural predators, besides specialist elephant hunting lion prides - the lion in Hwange National Park have become very good at hunting young & adolescent elephant - when hunting elephant the pride males also have to join the hunt as they have the power & weight to help bring them down, which is usually not the case. Read the description of the video. Nature isn't what you think it is. Nature is a violent, brutal landscape, and if we weren't hunting the world would be overpopulated by animals. Not only would humans have far less food, other animals would also starve because of the amount of plants being eaten. It would be harder and harder to keep humans safe when there are too many animals as well. Killing is part of nature, and it will be that way for a long time.

Thanks for the kind words! For this concession, the government essentially issues permits based on a very strict quota in 10 lb. increments starting at 25 lbs. and going up to 55 lbs. for the weight of each tusk. So each year they'll issue x-number of permits for each 10 lb. category based on the number of elephants in the area. The area is over 7,500 square miles! They are extremely strict on the weight and the bulls must be over 30 years old before they are able to be hunted. You cannot shoot a bull over 60 lbs. I believe because the government wants those genetics in the area and the bigger tusked bulls draw the tourists. We looked over hundreds of elephants and dozens of bulls before we found on that was at 35 lbs and over 30 years old. There is a big fine if the hunters shoots a bull above his permit weight so we didn't want to mess up. You can roughly judge the weight of an elephant's tusk by taking the circumference at the lip (in inches) and multiply it by the length from the lip to the end of the tusk (in feet). So a bull that measures 14" at the lip and is 3 feet long will weigh approximately 38 - 42 lbs.
