- In Tip 7 of Football Coaching Strategy and Training Tips with Coach Bill Renner, Coach Renner gives 8 reasons why every offense should have an EMPTY formation. He presents the 8 reasons and then explains each one in detail providing his game coaching experience from using an EMPTY formation for over 15 years including one year when he did not have a running back and had to play an entire season in an EMPTY formation. Some of the reasons you will learn about for using and EMPTY formation are: it is easy to read the defense, use it when you are behind by 14 points or more to make the game longer, for a last drive to win the game, as a hurry up change of pace using no cadence, 75% of high school plays are run from a hash so EMPTY takes advantage of that, no defense has 5 good defensive backs, receivers get more skill work in the off-season than defensive backs so EMPTY gives you an advantage, put your RB's as #1 receivers on the outside and your WR's as #3 and #2 on the inside and create matchup problems for the defense. Coach Renner's food for thought on EMPTY will give you the framework for a plan to make your offense even more difficult to defend but easier for your players to execute.
