    I LOVE the benign naiveté of this podcast. I sincerely believe that it represents the very best potential, and benign possibilities of the human species. It is EXACTLY what I hope for too. However, the deep wisdom, and humanistic heart and intentions that this podcast embodies is the antithesis of what is actually happening. "The road to hell is paved with good intentions" should be the motto of the human species. Collectively, as a species, have become so embroiled in our own geo-political, religious, economic and historical myth-making that objective reality has gone elsewhere. We live in a "la-la land" where wealth and privilege controls EVERYTHING. Wisdom, compassion and common sense have been abandoned by our privileged "deciders". Most of us - nearly 8 BILLION strong - are merely "passengers" on a down-hill slide to oblivion orchestrated by self-serving fools with little heart or vision. "Unmitigated Greed" will be Humanity's tragic epitaph.

      This podcast is more than just naive. Because it is agenda driven, it turns out it is _all_ agenda driven. Reflecting on the nature of humanity, why we humans do what we do, is not something that will get them anywhere, so they don't do it. The really hard problem of climate change is that it results from humans being human, and changing what we do is really hard.

    To point, the west, namely US scuttled peace agreements on at least two occasions. Russia has never intended to occupy or move further east provided Ukraine remains neutral. The US has stated that once Ukraine is under NATO it intends to put weapons on the Russian border…including nukes. If the situation were reversed, what would be the US response? Recall 1963. Paul should do his research on this.

    Thank you Regina, Peter and Paul. 2.4º Centigrade is in the system with the present level of CO2 (e) at around 560 ppm. Already it's going to take immediate cessation of fossil fuel use and what we can do ecologically and technically to stay below 2 and a half degrees. We've hit the scifi classic novel Ministry for the Future prognosis at this point in time. To stop it will need the Children of Kali. Well it's only a novel, but 'by golly gosh' the novel is proving to be closer to the reality than the IBRD, WTO, BIS, IPCC COP and the CIA-MI6-NATO attack dog combined. I note our mutual ally and friend Roger Hallam along with 3 others face sentence in a London Court for "telling the truth about the climate" on Thursday the 18th July. The bravery of truth tellers is beyond political and judicial deceit and dishonesty, which is in the realm of international crime, including war crime and ecosystem crime against life on planet Earth.

      what we have and what is coming is different, 1.5c seems to be something we are close to now.
      what we are going to get seem to be more than 5c in the next decades.
      that means that we are in full on collapse of humans and life on earth, only a few species left over the century.
      aiming for any degree is foolish, those are only incremental slow change towards a goal the moves and we can not track it.

    TRANSITION of the military economy has long been the challenge for USA , since at least 1945.
    Now a Charter for an Office of Transition & Survival is critical.
    Every church, union, and affinity group needs to organise a CATS Inc. committee with a strong commitment to youth. C.A.T.S. = Citizen Assembly for Transition & Survival..
    Check out the Nuclear Free Zone (NFZ) movement in New Zealand a generation ago, with childcare groups and towns, system change can catch on robustly by shifting the norms of legitimation from the face-to-face level of local institutions.

    The Militaries, and International travel, are usually excluded from CC statistics, from what I understand. I would point out, that the transport of fossils fuels, usually through International Waters, is therefore also excluded. The pumping and refining of oil is already a huge percentage of the total GHG, and then part of that is excluded. Our just getting our fuels, must be a really big source of our CO2 emissions.
    I've seen 40 gigatons and 55 gigatons of CO2, stated from different sources. Is that 15 gigatons, the part that is usually excluded from the figures?

    Just watching the intro, will need to catch up tomorrow.
    I have said for a long time that war in it's current form is impossible without oil. There are changes afoot with drones and sea drones though in the case of UAVs costing millions they can be destroyed with fairly cheap missiles so the costs become asymmetrical against the more technologically advanced army. It also looks like tanks could be become redundant with drones. That is more recent developments though.
    Until recently my argument had been overseas wars required aircraft carriers that required a 'ring of steel' of smaller vessels that protect the aircraft carrier. Without oil such fleets or battle groups are impossible, likewise with many planes that may be replaced with drones for some purposes.
    Moving to renewables reduces the likelihood of war but there are huge barriers.
    1.3 billion cars creates a huge economies of scale for oil. If we were to reduce the number of cars by 50 % and replace them with buses many oil fields become economical and the price of oil would need to increase. The military / taxpayer would pick up that extra cost making it difficult for countries to extend their power through war.

    Nonviolence, by Joan Baez. "Fred: It's human nature to kill. Something you can't change.
    Joan: Is it? If it's natural to kill, why do men have to go into training to learn how? There's violence in human nature, but there's also decency, love, kindness. Man organizes, buys, sells, pushes violence. The nonviolent wants to organize the opposite side. That's all nonviolence is - organized love.
    Fred: You're crazy.
    Joan: No doubt. Would you care to tell me the rest of the world is sane? Tell me that violence has been a great success for the past five thousand years, that the world is in fine shape, that wars have brought peace, understanding, democracy, and freedom to humankind and that killing each other has created an atmosphere of trust and hope. That it's grand for one billion people to live off of the other two billion, or that even if it hadn't been smooth going all along, we are now at last beginning to see our way though to a better world for all, as soon as we get a few minor wars out of the way.
    Fred: I'm doing OK.
    Joan: Consider it a lucky accident.
    Fred: I believe I should defend America and all that she stands for. Don't you believe in self-defense?
    Joan: No, that's how the mafia got started. A little band of people who got together to protect peasants. I'll take Gandhi's nonviolent resistance.
    Fred: I still don't get the point of nonviolence.
    Joan: The point of nonviolence is to build a floor, a strong new floor, beneath which we can no longer sink. A platform which stands a few feet above napalm, torture, exploitation, poison gas, nuclear bombs, the works. Give man a decent place to stand. He's been wallowing around in human blood and vomit and burnt flesh, screaming how it's going to bring peace to the world. He sticks his head out of the hole for a minute and sees a bunch of people gathering together and trying to build a structure above ground in the fresh air. 'Nice idea, but not very practical', he shouts and slides back into the hole. It was the same kind of thing when man found out the world was round. He fought for years to have it remain flat, with every proof on hand that it was not flat at all. It had no edge to drop off or sea monsters to swallow up his little ship in their gaping jaws.
    Fred: How are you going to build this practical structure?
    Joan: From the ground up. By studying, experimenting with every possible alternative to violence on every level. By learning how to say no to the nation-state, 'NO' to war taxes, 'NO' to military conscription, 'NO' to killing in general, 'YES' to co-operation, by starting new institutions which are based on the assumption that murder in any form is ruled out, by making and keeping in touch with nonviolent contacts all over the world, by engaging ourselves at every possible chance in dialogue with people, groups, to try to change the consensus that it's OK to kill.
    Fred: It sounds real nice, but I just don't think it can work.
    Joan: You are probably right. We probably don't have enough time. So far, we've been a glorious flop. The only thing that's been a worse flop than the organization of nonviolence has been the organization of violence.

    • @Corrie-fd9ww
      @Corrie-fd9ww 3 місяці тому +2

      And some research published this spring, this paper holds important nuance about chimps and bonobos. Overly simplistic, popular culture narratives and extracted info tidbits do NOT encompass the complexity of nature:
      Chimpanzees and bonobos are often thought to reflect two different sides of human nature -- the conflict-ready chimpanzee versus the peaceful bonobo -- but a new study publishing April 12 in the journal Current Biology shows that, within their own communities, male bonobos are more frequently aggressive than male chimpanzees. For both species, more aggressive males had more mating opportunities.
      "Chimpanzees and bonobos use aggression in different ways for specific reasons," says anthropologist and lead author Maud Mouginot of Boston University.
      "The idea is not to invalidate the image of bonobos being peaceful -- the idea is that there is a lot more complexity in both species."

    • @coweatsman
      @coweatsman 3 місяці тому

      Chimps are social animals and war is the dark side of social animals. Meerkats wage war on other mobs. Ants wage war. It should not be surprising because you can not wage a war without the cooperation of enough people. A war would not be possible. All you'd have otherwise would be a fight between 2 animals. Humans wage war on a global deadly scale with terrifying weapons because we're intelligent. Intelligence doesn't lower the chance of war. Intelligence allows bigger and better weapons.

    • @coweatsman
      @coweatsman 3 місяці тому

      @@Corrie-fd9ww I can not see how. Chimps and bonobos separated from their common ancestor 3 million years ago. They are both members of the pan genus. Humans separated from the common ancestor of the pan species and homo species, existing one and extinct homo species about 6 million years ago. That would mean we are equally related to both chimps and bonobos.
      For example imagine a family with 2 children born of the same parents, the Pans and the children are named Bonobo and Chimp. They have a cousin called human born to the Homo parents. Homo and Pan have parents called Ape. The child called Human would not be more closely related to one of the Pan children, Bonobo or Chimp than to the other. They have have behaviours more reminiscent of one than the other but genetically both the Pan children are equally related to the sole child of Homo, Human.
