Always puts a smile on your face when Lady Lobster puts a generally positive stamp on a bass you bought before the review came out! Yes my machines are also a bit stiff and gotohs may be in the future. But I’d already been on a gig and I got nothing but compliments both visually and audio-wise.
@@LowEndLobster for these people like me who think that Stingray style basses look like a toilet seat, you can completely remove the pickguard and this Z3 finish is very helpful because camouflages the holes. You can show it in a future mod video too :)
The black one is way more sparkly, than I expected Love it ❤ Even some birds eye in the Fredboard @5:02 Wow, that's a really thorough and in depth review very helpful thankyou :)
This is the review I was waiting for! As always, just the absolute best bass reviews on the internet. Thank you for what you do! Thank you for for just being you!
Duuuude, I love this new format for your videos! I wasn't a huge fan of the lobster hand. Love the effects, love the backing track and improvisation and above all, love your playing. Not sure it it was the bass, the new format of the videos, or your new format(congrats!) but seems like you are letting loose! well done! :)
Timely review as I look to thin the herd a bit to pick up a MM!!! This definitely sounds like a much better option for a gigging MM than what I was looking at - upwards of 2K lol... Awesome overview as ALWAYS!
For what you get for the price, I couldn't justify getting a Ray24 or 34 over this. The only thing missing from their Z lineup now is a double humbucker model. Another stellar review!
I was tempted to get a Ray24. I was interested because it has (from what I heard/read) a 38 mm nut (or 1.5" for our American friends). I really don't like wide necks, so much that I gave up a US Stingray. Sounded amazing, but the neck just wasn't for me. Now I am waiting for my Schecter to be turned into a Stingray through new preamp and pickup (fingers crossed)
Wonderful work. Always the most accurate and detailed look at details, they make this channel a reference for bass players who cannot go to the store and need to buy remotely. You save us many disappointments. Greetings from Brasil.
Didn’t know you came back! Very cool review happy to see you happy! I got a stingray special that I love but I only got it because it was half price because some guys wife was selling it. I love it but it’s unfortunately the only bass I have and been thinking about another but I don’t think I can afford it. Might consider this though thanks for the review.
Hey Lobster! For a bass at this price this bass blows me away! And after all the Sterling basses you have modified, wow, you only want to change the tuners on this bass! I wish I still had a dog to save me from the Big Muff. Great video.
Great review, as usual. It's weird that Sire's m.o. seems to be "We're going to do everything Ibanez used to get sued for and cop everyone else's designs." At least they're, for the most part, making decent copies.
It's good to have you back, I love your videos. I'm looking forward to the review of the Yamaha TRB1005J or the updated review of the BB735a that you recently got. Greetings and success.
While I'd rather have 38mm nut, this looks like a great MM alternative with some better bells and whistles. I do wish Sire would use this smaller headstock on all their Fender inspired bases. Any chance of a review of that F10?
Fantastic video! Between this and Bully’s it is clear that the Z series is great stuff. Also, appreciate the details about the specs and janky tuners - glad that’s the only drawback.
Thank you for the long and detailed review. I really think a set of tuners and maybe a preamp would be the mods to go for with this one - but not required for the preamp. I'm a passive P player all day but this kind of showed me what to enjoy about MM style instruments. Thank you, Lobster! Happy you are back on UA-cam.
Undoubtedly, another superbly built bass from Sire (aside from the tuners). I've been looking at this Z-series for a while so this review is most welcome. Thanks for your thoughts - always respected.
I suspect that the delay for the Z3/Z7 bass are probably due to quality issues as many seems to have those. It's probably the first batches of bass and unusual for Sire. But man that bass sound great. Can't wait to get my Z7 even if it take few months to get it in canada.
Oooo ok I've been wanting to try one of these but it's a bit of a drive to the nearest store that carries them. This video absolutely convinced me to make the drive. Especially that active/passive bypass. Great video!
You give the best reviews, thank you 🙏🏼 I’m on the fence between this bass and the Sterling Pete Wentz signature model passive stingray, i prefer passive over active basses, I like the simplicity!
I wish Sire would offer this model with roasted maple fingerboard, and maybe even fretless. Most people don't need the additional J pickup on Z7, but this roasted maple is a very nice thing to have (I own a P5, so I know :) ) This is a very versatile bass, I heard MM, P and J tones, and the smaller lower horn really looks good, IMO better than all kinds of "real" Rays.
I knew these were on their way, but I saw an 8 lb Ray34 demo at Sweetwater and jumped on it. Did I make the right choice? The price tag says no, but the listed weights for Z3s on Sweetwater say yes.
I hope the tuner issue is going to be addressed. Could just be a QC issue with your example. Sonojono didnt complain about the tuners in his review and other reviews I read of this bass stated that the tuners, while nothing great, served fine. Either way, we'll see when mine arrives probably later this month, haha. After 2 very faulty Ray34s (frozen truss rods on both, twisted neck on 1st, a janky tuner, and discovering they're wired in SERIES) I'm REALLY hoping it's a winner. Looks fantastic, appears comfortable and certainly sounds the part. Hard to argue with for $450.
Fantastic review Lobster! My Z3 came in at 8lb, a big surprise and I can see I've been very lucky. I have the same impressions with the bass, very good base, hambucker and preamp but tuners can be improved. So I look forward to you showing us this upgrade you mentioned! 🙌 Greetings!
Great review as almost always. Hey nobody's perfect;-) I'm really look forward to your take on the Z7. A few years ago I got one of the Harley Benton M-84's Which is overall an ok bass. Very playable and decent sounding with the 5-way switch and 3 band pre. For me though it's too heavy and the neck profile is too thick for me. As Sire goes I currently have a M7 and, in a case, because I don't have any more wall space, a V5. The M7 gets a fair amount of play but I favor my Fender J's (both MIM & USA) over the heavier Sire. At any rate. I really am interested in the Z7. I look forward to your next video. PEACE
Great review! Looks like Sire is having QC issues, releasing several new models at the same time and probably expanding the production lines to meet the demand. There's probably a lot of pressure with end of the year sales too. We see it on reviews and I've seen it in boutiques as well. One of them had to send back the ( only ) two he received and he wouldn't get more before december, with backorders already. I'm interested but I'll be patient to let them sort that out.
Can't wait for your modification video, i have 5 string z7 that i'm in love with, but tuners are too heavy and i need suggestions for a replacement! Great review as always!
Hello dear lobster, France is listening! I dreamt about it and you did it, a big thank you for this moment in the company of the Sire Z3. I think the Z3 is more attractive than the Sterling, but that's just me. As far as the Music Man is concerned, it's a beautiful product that justifies its high price. I'm off to find myself a Z3, and thanks again!
Great review Lob! Been waiting to see how these would be! Question: will you be reviewing the fretless Jack Casady? I felt like it would make its way to your claws soon! :)
Great review, and cool, original playing examples! Sire has a winner here! I like the modified body shape. The pickguard shape not so much, seems like it can't decide whether to follow the body shape or not. I like that they put higher quality parts on it compared to the Sterling Ray 4, which looks and feels a bit cheap imho. But I'm not sure if I'd prefer it over the Ray 24, which nails that classic vintage StingRay look & feel at a great price. And with some minor mods, it nails the tone as well. I feel the treble on the Z3 to be a little sharp, especially when boosted, because the EQ has it at a pretty high frequency, as you mentioned. But with less treble boost (or some treble cut), it sounds really nice and very authentic, especially through your Trickfish stack! I'm really looking forward to your Z7 review/comparison! I originally thought that this was the absolute winner, but then I heard about some QC issues with the pots. And it might be a bit overwhelming with its 7 controls. What I would have loved to see on the Z3 is the treble control becoming a passive tone blend in passive mode. That's what my current main bass does, and I don't want to miss it.
Great playing wow. That bass sounds fantastic. You made a believer out of me. I had a USA Stingray years ago and this gets into that sonic territory...perhaps even a bit brighter and livelier.
Best Z3 review on the webs! I had to go through it really quickly at first, because we were headed to see a movie. I scanned through and erroneously concluded there was no slap tone segment, about which I was utterly confused and annoyed! I found myself in the movie thinking, "it has to be there, I'm sure it is, I'll watch it in full later". And of course, it was. For the blind tone test, I guessed Pinky was bass number 1. Between those 2 samples, the Z3 honestly sounded significantly better to my ears. Pinky still sports possibly the most beautiful flamed maple I've ever seen, though. Bummer about the tuners, but easily replaced. And agreed, I really like Sire's bridge design for this bass. And it's just high time I got some sparkle in my life again. Last sparkly bass I had was a silver sparkle Modulus Flea bass with black pearl guard that I sold probably 15 years ago. Love this black sparkle finish, as well as the unique body shape. Very cool to see that the board has some birdseye figuring. If I get one (more like "when"), I hope mine does too!
Funny thing, there really sound like a stingray! Well done Sire. To me the iconic Stingray is about the tone, oval pick-guard, and 3+1 headstock. I know they cant do the 3+1 because of the Ernie Ball patent but 2 out of 3 knocked out of park :)
Great review as always. The tuners on my Sadowsky MetroExpress are "creaky" too, definitely feels like bad quality even though they can get in tune and stay in tune.
Very good review! I wish Sire would try their own version of the Thunderbird style or the EB. Tho it might not be what Marcus Millers plays or he likes. Still, I pre-ordered the U7 because of your review! The world needs more rock n rolla basses. Cheers!
I bought a Z7 a few weeks ago (and funny enough, it matches my Sire V7 Vintage!), and I freaking love it. The tone of the humbucker nails the Stingray sound and the neck and fingerboard are so comfortable!
I agree with you- Sterling has been really coasting, and even reducing finish options. And I love those basses. I have four of them. I hope Sire pushes Sterling to reinvest in their product lines and simply offer more colors, and some key options as Sire has like HS configuration, and a fretless option. Despite the poor tuners, it seems like a great value and a steal of an instrument. I hope Sterling is paying attention.
Hello again ! I must say I had no problems with the tuners on my SireZ7 . And one more thing dear Lobster when you test the Z7 : The humbucking pickups are upgrade compare to the Z3 Can’t wait till you test the SireZ7-5 str Swamp Ash !!!!!
As you mentioned years ago, I think Sire M5 is still the best bang for buck and the most versatile. I would love to get one of these, but I wish they make a passive version for each model at 100$ less, like a z3, m7, z7, and so on. Sterling is doing it, I think other brands should do it too. Keep with the perfect reviews as always Lobster :)
Great vid Lobster. Are you telepathic? Been looking at those Z Sires for two months now. Great review. Not many reviewers talk about the shape of the neck besides them having rolled edges. Anxiously waiting for the Z7 review.
At first I found the shape of those basses really ugly (on photos) but I gotta admit it's totally ok and all that finish is awesome, the sparkle + the glossy neck/fingerboard/headstock is great, I love it Sire again being super impressive with their releases, curious to see the Z7 version
I have a number of affordable basses that had tuner bushings popping out (on arrival). I take them out and put them back in with a dab of wood glue. Works every time.

At first I found the shape of those basses really ugly (on photos) but I gotta admit it's totally ok and all that finish is awesome, the sparkle + the glossy neck/fingerboard/headstock is great, I love it
Sire again being super impressive with their releases, curious to see the Z7 version
I have a number of affordable basses that had tuner bushings popping out (on arrival). I take them out and put them back in with a dab of wood glue. Works every time.
Im thinking of the Z7 Fretless might have to try this too😅
