    When the Byrds visited Sweden in early 1967 they did a short TV recording but also this live recording with introductions between the songs. Quite unique. Don’ miss the 2 great Gary Usher Byrds specials on UA-cam. Lots of new amazing stuff.

      This is as good as it could possibly be given the state of recording equipment in 1967. Just wish it was about two hours longer. Rare to hear “live” Byrds from this year at this quality.

      This incarnation of the band is the only one that should be recognized. The future was filled with charlatans whose mission was to to maul and mar the legacy of one of the greatest groups America has ever produced.

    This is, probably, the tightest, cleanest live performance of the original Byrds lineup(minus Gene Clark)that we'll ever hear. McGuinn, once, said that the band almost never rehearsed outside of the studio. Imagine if they had. Most of the live Byrds stuff I've heard from this time period is pretty bad but I blame much of that on awful sound systems, primitive live recording equipment and techniques, and drug use. I guess one very talented member felt he had to be high when playing live. Too bad. I wish this recording had 20 songs on it. Byrds forever!!!

      I hope it is not quite stating the obvious but if the band had rehearsed more then would they would have invest more in how they sounded? And, if they were recorded, how well they were recorded when playing live?

    • @artysanmobile
      @artysanmobile 4 місяці тому

      McGuinn and David had a major falling out and listening to this intro, I can somewhat see why. “Rhythm guitar” and they kick it off with David singing ‘Hey Joe’ like an angel. They really rubbed each other the wrong way even while making fantastic records. I worked with David on a number of CSN projects and was pretty shocked by his fury over my mention of The Byrds. I was relieved to see them happy together near the end for David. Bob Dylan might’ve had a lot to do with that.

    • @artysanmobile
      @artysanmobile 4 місяці тому

      @@MrDirtybear When a band encounters major success, time is always short and the first thing to go is rehearsal. It makes some sense as studio time always counts for some. I’ve worked with many acts at the height of their touring careers to see all rehearsal being done at soundchecks. It’s just a reality of the biz, which works a hit act to the bone to make max money.

      This version of “He Was A Friend of Mine” is my favorite, the vocals are more expressive than on the album and the percussion is better here, too. I wish Gene Clark had stayed in the band a few years longer, The Byrds would have reached even greater heights!

    It never amazes me how fans of the same bands can be so divided on their opinions of the same band's output! I am astonished by the comments on UA-cam which rave about bands and performances that I consider abonimably bad, and lord! lookout for any retaliation from those fans when you leave criticism! I've waited years to hear this recording by the Byrds, and I think they sound really, really good here! I'm not enthused by the out-of-tune and over-distorted guitar on Mr Tambourine Man this time round, but their singing is really fine here, and is almost at, or at, the quality of their studio recordings. And, I disagree with the comment left here about Hey Joe being sub par...couldn't disagree more! Their rendition of Beethoven is also pretty good, however out of character it seems for them. Also, it's really amusing to hear their commentary between tracks. They sound at once smart and stupid, young men but still kids. I love the first incarnation of the group and always hated their later stuff...sorry Jim! I don't think they knew themselves how incredible and great they were when they were at their height and most influential 1965-67. Which is why this recording is so precious to me; it marks the end of that original lineup, minus Gene Clark already, when they still had that original spark, which would quickly vanish shortly after this. A great addition here on UA-cam!

      I enjoyed your comment..my fave period of Byrds is 5D to Notorious..I guess their psychedelic period with the emphasis on Crosby and his boundary pushing..I am out of step with a lot of Byrds fans in that I wasnt a fan of Sweetheart of the rodeo..I liked their country flavoured tracks that Hillman wrote on younger than yesterday, but not when they went all out country..also, my regret was to learn that they were about to do another Jazz rock/psychedelic album after Notorious but changed their minds..what a loss that was I believe..I would love to hear any demos they may have done for that never to be album..if only

    • @CameronUKSA
      @CameronUKSA 3 роки тому +1

      @@cliveedwards2958 Yeah, I never liked Sweetheart of the Rodeo either, except maybe '100 Years From Now' which has their traditional sound to the vocals. Could never stand Graham Parsons, and so that cuts out all the Burrito Brothers material for me as well. I also bought 'Easy Rider', and there are a couple good tracks on there, but you have to understand that it's a whole different lineup by then. I also like their country-esque tunes on Younger Than Yesterday. I just love Mr Tambourine Man, the whole album, especially 'Bells of Rhymney' but the whole album is full of gems. I always liked their unreleased 'I Know my Rider', which sounds an awful lot like the Turtles' 'Outside Chance', if you don't know either of them, check them out.

      @@CameronUKSA oh thank God...I allways thought it was a mortal sin in Byrds fan land to admit to NOT liking Sweetheart and Gram's contributions..I'm such a fan of the three albums 5D....Younger.. and Notorious..that it was for me a completely different band when Gene Clark and ultimately Dave Crosby left that I may as well have just been listening to some Nashville band..I liked moments like Bad night at the whiskey and a few others like Lover of the bayou but by then the key sound had just gone...I know Classic Rock magazine carried a huge article on the magnificence of Sweetheart..but I just wanted to stand up and shout about I see you and Rock and roll star and that whole period..but nobody was listening..I'm gonna check out that Turtles track you mention..I do know their version of You show me which was good...good to talk to somebody who loves the real Byrds

      Listen, we were lucky that they reached a plateau that in my mind eclipsed anything the Beatles were doing in the studio. The Notorious Byrd Bros. was absolutely cutting edge creativity for that era and the band's most talented musicians, Crosby and Clark were through with each other and the band. A tragedy, musically that a future including those two never came to be. And the only recourse for McGuinn was to make really bland studio music unworthy of their name and instead concentrate on doing live arena shows with a kind of hillbilly Ten Years After backup band featuring mind numbing jams that clocked in at 15 minutes plus regularly. In the history of American rock, one of the its greatest travesties. The devolution from creative giants , and I would include producer Gary Usher here, to a bunch of guys wth guitars just making a living was breathtaking in the worst possible sense.

    Such a great document. The byrd's meant so much for me, you see I played drums in a street fairs-clubs band called silver wings ✈️ test flight 1977-1986, also singing a little, a some songwriting. I believe the byrd's influence to be possibly the most underrated in pop music. Without the byrd's folk, country, and country rock as we know it today would likely not be the same. It is a valuable sound source to enjoy the original byrds' studio live! Compared to their album's progressiveness, it feels a little sluggish From this setlist. However I can hear the secret of the basic track of "Younger Than Yesterday". Two jangly guitars, melodic and captivating bass, and brash drums. The sound quality is good remastered. I hope these are officially released!

      Yes, funny that. They were a brilliant band. And Clark proved over and over again through his solo work, that he was better. Much petty jealousy and childish selfishness on the part of the two leaders. Thanks guys. The demise of your collective mastery left a void where even Eagles dared to settle, then leave their litter everywhere.
