Jay, as a new (adult) student of the sax i think Mr Gross's point that everyone learns at their own pace, we just need to keep moving forward is so importaint. it is so easy for every one of us to listen to much to our selfcritical voice and become discouraged. Keep bring such great interviews.
I so agree with this. I'm not new but I'm returning to saxophone after 10 years. I constantly remind myself, it's the journey that matters!
What a privilege to be able to listen to these two cool cats talk about the magic ingredients of the craft of jazz. Thank you so much Jay for sharing this with us.
Jay, thanks for getting these people on tape and sharing the stories that everyone should hear.
I love Mark Gross
It IS a perfect interview. You strike the perfect balance between talking and listening, Jay. And that’s apart from the great content. 🙏🏻🙏🏻
A treasure. Thank you. You work hard and unselfishly for jazz lovers
An excellent interview Jay. It's like sitting in on a mini master class. You are one of the keepers of the flame.
I just love these interviews about the jazz greats, it helps considerably in our music journeys.
I wish back when I was studying music that my professors explained improv to me in this way. My misconception of improv made the artistry of jazz a frustration, but between listening to the two of you discuss the process and watching the videos you've posted over the last few years I'm beginning to understand. You have really helped to demystify this art form for me. Thank you.
Glad to hear this from you.
These interviews are my favorite videos you make. Hearing from the greats feels really encouraging even as a novice and they somehow always leave me feeling good by the time they're over lol.
Jay, this is, hands down, my favorite interview that you've had! Mark G. is so ridiculously perceptive and friendly.
Great interview! I've had the pleasure of meeting and attending a few workshops with Mark Gross in attendance. He's is extremely gifted and inspiring to people of all ages. He walks the talk.
Absolutely appreciate listening and learning from that conversation.
“Keep moving forward” That’s what I needed to hear today. Great interview!
Man I love these interviews
Thanks for that Interview. Being only two months younger than Mark Gross, I started the journey to saxophone four years ago and am looking forward where it may lead….
Love that UA-cam clip of Mark playing Billie’s Bounce with Baptiste H. Legends. Brilliant interview Jay!
WOW enjoyed that conversation so much. Thanks Jay
Hey another great interview Jay.
Great interview, Jay. Thanks for everything you do!
Another great interview, Jay, thanks man. speaking for myself and perhaps shared by many others, Marks Gross’ endorsement of your videos says a lot about your contribution to our knowledge as developing horn players. Very much appreciated.
thanks Kirk
Love ur reeds, I’ve been experimenting for a while now with tenor sax reeds and these reeds just flow so nicely. My highschool jazz band has played some pretty fun pieces and these reeds are awesome for them.
Great to hear thank you!
Thank you Jay, a super video !!❤
I've listened to every single studio album and live album that Apple Music has for Cannonball Adderley. He was great! I'm convinced that you can't be a fan of Julian
Cannonball" Adderley and not respect Nat Adderley as well. They were such a team!
Incredible interview! Elvin Jones' story of playing in THE quartet! Dizzy's story of playing with Bird! Mr. Heath & Coltrane's conclusion after listening to Bird -- 'if that's how you play alto -- we'll play tenor!' Ha.
Another great video Jay!
Love those! keep them coming
Hey Jay! My sax prof Todd Williams used to teach at Queens. He played at Dizzy's funeral with the Wynton Marsalis septet. Maybe you know him?
Another great interview.
Is Benny Golson next?
Obligations…🎵🎶🎵🎷
Hello,
I have been thinking about buying a soprano saxophone that is one piece (you can’t take off the neck from the body). I don’t know how I could clean it though. Do you have any ideas? Great video!
you can pass a swab for a neck or mouthpiece through in many cases. You have to be careful that it doesn't get stuck though. If it does, take something made of wood or plastic to poke it back out.
Jay, I think you reached with Mark, a similar level of content to when Jaleel Shaw shared that Roy Haynes said to him, "I could play any rhythm behind Charlie Parker or John Coltrane and they wouldn't miss a beat. Their sense of time was so independent."
Hey Jay, can you give an update on the cheap Amazon Sax you bought a few years ago? How is it holding up?
I gave that instrument away in a giveaway contest so couldn’t tell you.

I don’t consider myself a jazz player at all. I’m R&B, soul, pop, funk etc. I know some standards and I can hit a few licks in jazz but not enough to call myself a jazz player. Most of it I don’t understand.
Jazz is too sophiscated and intellectual for the hive minds
