I liked it and it made me emotional a few times. Going through that at 15 is sad. I do wish there was more intimate moments between the 2(which is why im excited for the Tv adaptation as we might get extra content of their romantic relationship) I really enjoyed their scenes from sharing the bed and the bath and just talking with each other. James calmed mungo down a lot and he needed that as he has nobody in his life like james. I found it sweet. I wish mungo did tell them what happened in the end, especially as all 3 of his family were the reason he went on the trip. Would be nice to see their reaction to mungo telling what actually happened. I dont want his family getting off lightly for what they did. I believe mungo crossed the road in the end towards james and they left together. Nothing left for mungo. With hamish distracting the police he had the opportunity to leave “Mungo knew what he was going to do , where he was going to go. The only place he would ever want to be” these lines confirmed it for me
I am trying to finish the book in Italian. The author writes a lor about bad smell 🤧🤧 i don't find anyone saying that. And I am still waiting for the love story, I'm on 246 page.
I've read shuggie bain and I've heard so many people say this is verrrry similar and based on the content I may give it a miss. I did find shuggie to have interesting plot shifts which are written well but it could have been 100 pages shorter imo 😊
Have you read a A Little Life? If so, did you have a similar feeling of events being unbelievable? I loved A Little Life but personally I found it gratuitous and a disconnect at times because it seems beyond the realm of likelihood. I didn’t feel like that with Young Mungo though, so would be interested to hear your thoughts.
ah yeah... see, with A Little Life, it seemed clear that HY was pushing the boundaries of genre. It seemed like an opera/tragedy or something, and leant in to the melodramatic. With Mungo it felt like he was trying to do 'proper' realism and I think that's why I didn't get on with it...

I don't think I noticed the smell!
