BTS (Korean: 방탄소년단; RR: Bangtan Sonyeondan; lit. Bulletproof Boy Scouts), also known as the Bangtan Boys, is a South Korean boy band formed in 2010. The band consists of Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook, who co-write or co-produce much of their material. Originally a hip hop group, they expanded their musical style to incorporate a wide range of genres, while their lyrics have focused on subjects including mental health, the troubles of school-age youth and coming of age, loss, the journey towards self-love, individualism, and the consequences of fame and recognition. Their discography and adjacent work has also referenced literature, philosophy and psychology, and includes an alternate universe storyline.

I know you're trying to compliment them, but since they're BTS, it honestly came out to me as insult, yeah sure they're good looking, good singer, dancer, but that's literally like the bare minimum in kpop groups, the actual reason why they stood out is their music, lyrics and story.
They write and produce their own stuff. And they're very thought provoking.
For example, in this song it may sound like normal temptation type of vibes. But if you go deeper, they might be warning their fans about self-indulgence. Some also think this song is a diss of the current reality of pop music in making money, like exploiting teen girls like the title itself 'PIED PIPER'. A famous fairly tale in medieval period of a guy who plays flute and takes children.
But if you want to go deeper, you'll go to the album itself and it's placement in the album. The themes of 'HER' album is more like an illusion that will soon be broken in the next album called 'TEAR which is more about the dark reality' but ultimately the journey will end in 'ANSWER' album where you will face liberation and self expression.
As you dive deeper into BTS you'll find out that not only are they not a pop group but they don't have a genre. They started out as a hip-hop group and have covered every genre imaginable since then. They also make their own music and have based their albums on psychological books and theories so their lyrics and messages are on another level.
You'd be surprised how many metalheads and people over the age of 60 are fans of BTS since they have that rock stars elements and are probably the most versatile artists to ever exist. You'll see all of that eventually.

I'm a 60 year old ARMY here. I grew up on the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and the whole Disco era. My first concert was Fleetwood Mac. I've seen 100+ concerts/bands in my lifetime from Journey, Scorpions, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, RUSH, to Elton John, to Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Usher, and everything in between. I went to my first BTS concert in Vegas in 2022, and I can honestly and sincerely say it was the BEST concert I have EVER experienced in my life! I don't say that lightly either. These guys hit so many different genres it's insane, and their talent is off the chain. My family thinks these guys are just a teenage pop boyband like NSYNC or Backstreet Boys... LOL. The oldest Jin, was just discharged from the military yesterday. Just another year and all seven will be back together again. Borahae 💜
I have seen numerous of concerts ,all from the seventies groups and recently saw BTS Yet to come concert on Prime . Best concert I have seen and I have seen a lot . Those boys are so so so talented, love all of their songs as a group and individualy

58 year old here. The group is known for powerful performances, precision dancing and lyrics that have a message. They write compose and produce much of their music. They are often called 7 solo artists that choose to be in a group. The more you watch, the more you will catch on. Just dig into the discography and look for Mic Drop, Black Swan, and maybe On:Kinetic Manifesto Film. They are all different genres and will not only entertain you but will most likely get into your head because of all the hooks that are undeniably addictive. LOL, I'm 70 yesterday. I love these guys. Better than the Beatles, even broke Beatles records. They do every genre you can think of. These guys blow any other boy band out of the water. They are blue tooth and sync up with your seat number at concerts.
The one in the green mic is V, he is the baritone of the group, I'd suggest you watch some of his solo songs too like " love me again", "Fri(end)s" and " Slow dancing"

I'm a 73-year-old piece of coal! I'm the Beatle Baby........The Backstreet Boys with my daughter through 5 concerts and God knows how much merch! I love early rap and R n B. Been an Army since 2014 jamin with the videos with my granddaughter on my lap. These boys....men now are a genre of their own. A once in a lifetime group with so many talents and a beautiful message that is understood worldwide.
I know you think you get it, but you don’t yet. You’re comparing them to other groups from the past, but BTS are innovators. You have barely scratched the surface with BTS. You need to learn a LOT more about them before you start analyzing them. You should be in inquiry mode right now, not analysis mode because you’re not ready for that yet. They are album artists and you really can’t understand them without listening to an entire album or even album series. There are classes at universities around the world dedicated to BTS’s music and art for a reason. BTS’s fanbase isn’t full of brilliant academics just because they are attractive and entertaining. It’s because they make brilliant and innovative art with a ton of depth and social consciousness and with extremely smart lyrics.
also, they are all so beautiful and good humans, not to mention all are so Handsome they all have major brand ambassador endorsement deals. It might surprise you to find there are as many guys that are ARMY as girls in countries that stopped being intolerant of different. South America, USA, and most of Europe. We know this by who are buying merch and concert tickets.
Well said and economists and other fields professionals from various countries get together, have forums and study about them. Before Covid they had these forums 3 years in a row.
There was actually a course at UC Berkeley called Next Generation Leaders: BTS. I don't know if this course still exists. This group has been studied by so many scholars around the world. 💜

I am right there with you on your background. I am a 55 yr old rocker girl from the 80s and 90s. I've seen Def Leppard 47 times live since 1986 and tons of other metal and hard rock bands. I NEVER thought I'd be fangirling over 7 men so much my Jr but here I am loving every second of my BTS journey!! I was really sick of all the classic rock and metal I'd grown up on and was in a total burn out when BTS found me 3 yrs ago. I have never been more fulfilled musically in so very long! BTS has so many different styles and so much to discover. Thanks for the reaction and have a great summer!! 💜

I am 48; huge NKOTB fan, but western boy bands cannot be compared to BTS, they are so much more then pretty faces and great voices. There story from beginning to now is a long one and you see how much they have grown and become the incredible men that they are now, There will never be another group like them. You can’t really dance around the outside, you need to dive deeper to understand and appreciate.
54 year old Army here. Standing next to you is not an Usher song. It is Jungkook song. Usher is a feature on a remix of the original song. Jin just finished his military duties and is officially back as of today. I am sure we will get a solo album from him next.

Honey,you're a kid 46 is nothing. I'm 67 this month, and I've been with Bts since 2014. It's been the best experience of my life. In all this time, I have never been disappointed. Yes, they had different color microphones. They sold for charity where the money was donated to stage hands. They've donated almost every year for the last 5 to the Grammy charity foundation.

Silver ARMY here. 64 y/y and these are my guys. Love them and they draw from me as much emotion as any song from the 70s...in terms of variety, there is something for everyone and every emotion. There is something so special, unique and fresh about them as a group and individually. There is so much music they have gifted us. So much loving content. Too many accolades to mention here. I’m almost 47 and I LOVE BTS. I am a die hard NKOTB fan but my God, do I love these boys. I have never seen such a talented group of young men, they truly blow my mind. My bias is Jimin all day, every day but the group would not be the same without every single one of them. They are perfection. Also, WELCOME HOME, JIN!! WE MISSED YOU!!! 💜💜
Pied piper actually bts's way to advise armys to focus on studying / working instead too much attention to anything related to BTS (contents, music videos, pictures, etc etc)..
I would give anything to see Pied Piper Live in Concert. The feeling it gives me watching it on a video, I'm sure it would be 10 times stronger in concert. Also; You have to see BTS live in concert. I used to book concerts all over the world and I have never seen anything like these men in my whole life. Any concert is great but BTS like an incredible feeling that spreads throughout the crowd. It's bigger than Metallica, Lincoln Park, The Boss and Taylor. You have to experience a concert to understand that BTS holds your attention for 3 hours and each song has you singing at the top of your lungs, while groovin' in your seat. Mid 70s here..heard so many different genre / artists. These guys are the real deal..good looks, talent, dedication..their dancing and singing is amazing. Offstage they are funny, humble and thoughtful. Their music composition and ability to tell stories with the songs is just.....!

I'm 61 a professor love snow patrol, Keane. These are not a boy band. Those were just sloppy singers with no depth no content and no contribution to the world. What they espouse as a group and individually is about strength of character, of integrity of respect. Of sincerity which no group has shown, metal. Or otherwise. And we haven't started on talent and professionalism and purity. What you got somewhat right is that they are each in their own right artists. One member singing with usher is nothing. If that's all that amz3s you then you really do not get it. My advise is stop coming at this with this is a pop group filled with young girls and cute boys. This song was for the fans male or female to tell them that they are appreciated and to focus on their studies and lives and that BTS has their back. Their discography is so large that just watching one and not understanding the context tells you little. I suggest you watch their growth learn about their principles, listen to their songs which talk about social issues and learn about them. Though I am a V Stan I respect BTS as a group and what they stand for. It requires some work and some hard thinking. So it's not as simple as some football match with a bunch of jocks or pop singers or western pop groups put together to feed some perceived female need. Maybe that's why it's difficult to appreciate and acknowledge BTS.

Yes the song started with Jungkook in the purple microphone. They all have chosen their microphone colors, which match their In-ears. The lightsticks are called “ARMY Bombs”. The light sticks are synchronized in the concerts. This is a super catchy song! Kim SeokJin (Jin with the pink microphone) just got released from his military duty TODAY! All of the other members are currently serving their time in the South Korean Military. And we are celebrating FESTA 2024 right now. Eleven years since their debut. You definitely should check it out!
the different color mics started during covid and yes, their inears match. Jin' always has the pink one. In fact he calls it Pink Mike.
The key point to this song is in the beginning when RM's words are to study for your test; your parents and boss hate me. The Pied Piper never stops enticing. All the members are extra enticing in the song, but their verses are dangerous.
In other words, don't lose your life in fandom. BTS Army is encouraged to do good for themselves, they are beyond fandom.

I'm 63 and a rocker and I found them in 2015. I'm still obsessed. Saw them live in 2019. There is no comparison to anyone else. They are a genre themselves.
42-year-old ARMY here. They're definitely goodlooking ;) ...but that is not why I'm a fan. Personally, I was drawn in by their dance, stayed because of their lyrics, and became ARMY because of who they are as people. I don't think you get it yet :) But if you choose to keep learning about them, you will!
77 year army here. They are the music I listen to every day. Please do more of their individual works also. V’s Layover album on Tiny Desk Korea is my favorite but everything they do is special.
Beyond the winking, the singing, the dancing, and entertainment, beyond the fact that they are very talented, we love BTS because of their love for music, their artistry, their invidual personalities, their brotherhood bond and most of all their love and appreciation for us ARMY. No other artist in the world who would always think of the fans when they write thier music. We always get included so at the heart of whatever BTS do, there's the ARMY. I hope people will realise we do not just get hyped because these dudes are hot and good looking. Bottomline is that ARMYs love BTS because they love us more.

I heard this song was written tongue and cheek to ARMY. The audience are holding ARMY BOMBS (Light Sticks). They are Bluetooth enabled allowing the sound/lightning crews to control them so that they sync with the music.

Most Kpop groups have a light stick or something similar that their fans buy to show support for the favorite. There are also fan chants that usually go along with specific songs or are just to hype the group up.
Dude. I am 52. I was definitely into all the hair metal bands in the 80s/90s. I was into HIM, NIN, etc before getting into BTS. Now I have seen BTS in concert in Vegas and I was blown away. Best concerts I have ever experienced... and I have experienced a few. They have it to an art that you feel like you are a part of the show, not just an observer. It makes their performances and experience. Please continue with them. They are extremely talented and hard working.
BTS have a wonderful humility and sense of humor. This song is how you taken in, forget all your troubles, ignore your responsibilities to just focusing on them with their songs, their videos, and other things they do. There is A LOT in go in rabbit hole.

42 yr old R&B,Rap and Rock fan. Never was into boy bands at all growing up. There is so much to each talented member and they are all great humble humans. I absolutely love that they have a huge diverse discography. If you really give them a chance it will be really hard not to fall in love with them for their music, performances and personalities.
I’m 77 year old ARMY an and saw them first on the UK The Voice as the guests at the final… from then on I was gone… super talented, compassionate, kind and thoughtful to everyone around them, generally seven good guys who just love to perform. We patiently await their return to normal life from military service which they have to do in a Korea….jin was discharged only a week ago, next day he was performing at FESTA.

Your ending statement really hit the nail on the head! They're all individually stellar artists - they all bring something unique and special to the table, and as a group they shine. It's really something to behold. I'm a late millenial, so pushing 40, but vividly remember my tween years being very into boy bands. Peering back into the 'boy band' world with my musical taste spanning rock, metal, indie and electronica, I was initially skeptical about BTS, and wrongly so! You'll find this story is pretty common within ARMY, haha. They seem so superhuman, but never act as such - they came from humble beginnings, and continue to be humble despite their status. I adore them.
You may be shocked ARMY demograpphics roughly only 25% are under 25 and 30% are men. You will get alot of silver ARMY in comments because they have more time. That is why BTS are brand ambassadors for the big luxury brands like Tiffany, Bottega Venneto, Cartier etc.
Ive been army since their pre debut days in 2013 and havent turned back since. They have pver 300+ songs together and as solo artists i love it.

Idk if you have checked out Agust D who is SUGA in BTS but Agust D is his solo name. He is phenomenal and a musical genius. If you decide to react to him his solo stuff that’s older start with Give it to Me. Then A gust D. Next is his trilogy Daechwita. Haegeum and Amygdala. You have to watch those 3 in order. He writes everything and produces not only for himself but other artists as well. He had his first solo tour last year D Day which was amazing and there’s plenty of concert footage with other great songs by him.

I understand where you're coming from based on the songs you've heard, but BTS can't really be put into one genre. It's one of the reasons why they have fans from many different age groups. The lyrics are another reason, btw. I appreciate that you noticed the lyrics. However this song is mostly a little lighthearted jab at the fans 😄. So they didn't really go that deep in here. Though they have made reference to the legend of the Pied Piper, which is not uncommon in their songs: to refer to a literature piece or other art pieces. They also have an album series based on Jungian psychology (Map of the Soul).
If I could recommend you a video to watch, I would actually suggest a video essay called "bts are rockstars" by boracity magazine. I think it would be interesting to see what you think of that. There are things in the video you probably already noticed yourself, but put into different perspective and other things might surprise you. Just for the record, the video doesn't claim BTS are a rock group or something like that. It has less to do with a genre (because as I said before, once you hear more of their stuff it becomes harder and harder to place them into a genre) and more with every other aspect of their music and performances.
But, to be fair, you're not wrong about the winks and kisses 😂. Also, body rolls and hip thrusts. We do go crazy for the body rolls and hip thrusts and they know it. They have called us out on that before as well...right before they started arguing whose hips worked the hardest in a particular song 😂. However, there is really so many more (and more important) reasons why we love them, so while these winks and kisses are nice, we'll still love them when they're all "old farts" 🤣
I am an old fart from '54, and four years ago, I found BTS. I never loved boy bands before. 😂
You need to watch a lot more. Their music is so varied that you can't really understand why they're so great from one song. This one is sort of directed at fans and making fun of their obsession with BTS, but if you start watching other songs you'll realize the girls aren't just there for their winks and good looks. Their fan base is really all over the map.
59 female here and I grew up listening to what my mom liked 50s and 60s and of course for me the 80s was the decade I grew up in. I thought Kpop was just boy bands and pop, but it's not a genre, it's just Korean. I've also branched out into groups like Forestella, who are are awesome, and Chinese popular music. Zhou Shen and Hua Chenyu. The Khazak singer Dimash Kudaibergen who is an insane singer. I could go on. There is SO much great music out there that we used to miss in the West, but now it's much more accessible.
But regarding BTS you GOTTA watch a lot more. This is a great song but it's just a tiny part of what they can do.

Jungkook's is purple, V's is usually green, Jimin's is gold, RM's is blue, JHope's is ed, Suga's is black and Jin's was pink, he broke i before going into the military, so may change. And it isn't 100% I have seen them with different colors. I used the mic colors at first to help id them in the beginning
I love that BTS has so many different sides and they have no pretense about which one they are putting on for the stage. We all know it's the persona of the song or the concept that they are embodying, but it's still them.
A massive chunk of ARMY like me initially were NOT into them because we thought it was all winking and flirting, but now we see this as a bit of fun in between the stuff that really drew us in -- the songs that show their depth and willingness to explore the "big" things in life. Those are the songs that built their fanbase to what it is, while he also have these fun "inside joke" songs with them.

Each member has their own personalised hand held mic's and some have they encrusted with gems like Jin's famous pink mic. They also use a variety of head mics at times.
The lyrics are them scolding the fanbase for our obsession with them, they did a horrible job though in deterring us 😂😂

55 yr old ARMY here since 2016. I got my 78 yr old mom and 26 yr old daughter into the ARMY too! They aren’t your typical “boy band” they are a SUPER GROUP 💜 ARMY are holding light sticks called ARMY bombs. They write and produce most of their music so they are not mainstream “KPop”. They perform just MANY genres of music. I personally like V’s jazzy music.
Im a 33 year young Army and these guys do have different color mics and ear pieces as well not to mention the crowd Army was holding Bts light sticks called Army bombs.
They are amazing artists song writers, composer, producers, rappers, vocialist, dancers but they are very down to earth. Their music can't be contained to one genre either plus their lyrics are extremely important and reflect them as individual people and artists. There are many songs where they are in life what they've gone through lots of reference's to social issues, mental health, classic books, Psychology, art and their relationship with ARMY (fandom). Oh and quiet a few heavy Diss Rap's to their many haters. Their looks come secondary.

I'm in my 60's and I've worked in LA and I've worked for Scene Magazine as a photographer so I've met my fair share of artists and groups. I've gone to so many concerts over the years too as part of my work. I don't do that anymore but I have to say that going to a BTS concert is the BEST I have ever been to and that's saying a lot. They are nothing like your average boy band because BTS writes, produces, and has a ton of input about what they put out to the world.

I am 69 and just found BTS last year and I was mesmerized - that's the word to describe - and continued to be mesmerized by their incredible talent, dedication, tenacity and humiity. That they are very good looking, too, is a just pleasant bonus. i love all of them!
I'm curious when you're going to get into BTS root songs -- their hiphop that they started with. We love their cheeky pop songs, but get a bit frustrated when people really do lock into thinking that's all they do.
I'd say the biggest difference between them and the groups you mentioned was the they started with underground rap as their base and they write/create their own stuff. They have way more artistic freedoms than their contemporaries in kpop (which is what pioneered the way for other Korean acts to do the same) and the members have explored the full range of music.

This song is a stand alone almost, within the vibe and lyrics of the song. 90% of BTS songs have a deep meaning and lyrics, which I feel is more important for new people to learn and see first. Love Pied Piper as its own thing though!

We go crazy not only because of their ability to sing and to perform, once we know their individual personality, attitude, their works; how well they wrote and composed their songs, their determination since the training era,, how we cannot go crazy (love) them?Not to mention we joined the BTS army because BTS helped us through their songs copping our lowest days. Btw, I'm 51th, just found by BTS in the covid era.
They usually have colour-coded mics. Sometimes they may use other colours but typically certain members will use specific coloured custom mics and matching in-ears.
The lights that the fans are holding are called ARMY bombs. They're kinda expensive so not everyone has one. So when you see a huge sea of lights, even that doesn't show exactly how many ARMYs are at a performance. The light sticks that are connected to an app on our phones and when we go to concerts, we go to have it programmed for our specific seat numbers for that specific concert. Sometimes they do cool stuff with the bluetooth to control shapes and colours in the lights based on seating. It's beautiful to watch.
About BTS themselves. Yes they're very attractive and they know how to play to the camera and perform well but that's sort of a pre-requisite for kpop idols. I would even say that attractiveness may be the one thing you need to even be considered for a group since they train everything else into you for 6months to several years. So the sort of love BTS gets isn't just that because frankly pretty faces who can sing and dance well and flirt with the camera can be found by the thousands. Literally. BTS's impact goes much much deeper.
Even this particular song has an interesting message that ties into how it's performed. The song is very catchy and designed to be an earworm with lots of flirty moments that plays into their "idol-ness" in an in-your-face way. Which works because the song is about them acknowledging that fans are drawn to them like the pied piper luring people in. They acknowledge their worry that it might be unhealthy for us that we pay so much attention to them and worry that our real life responsibilities might be pushed aside to pay attention to their songs, videos, etc. They encourage the listeners to take time to focus on what's important and find balance.
Funnily enough, many of the younger fans showed BTS photo proof of why they were doing in school to prove that they had balance. The song sounds sexy and flirty but it's about keeping fans accountable. We joke that the song is so good it makes us want to listen more, not less.

Not just the girls go nuts for BTS. Doesn't matter if you're straight or not you can't resist them. Each member has their own mic in the colour they like best. Some of them are jeweled. SUGA had to take the jewels off his following his shoulder op as it was too heavy to use comfortably. Pied Piper is roasting their fans for losing sleep over them. They're telling us not to do it but also that we can't resist them. The crowd are holding BTS light sticks called ARMY Bombs. They are linked to the stage so that the lighting engineers can change the patterns the lights make. Most Idol groups now have their own version of these. I think this performance was from the amazing Fifth Muster in Busan. That's a special fan meeting. BTS don't have big egos so they always introduce themselves as from BTS even when they are doing solo shows and concerts. They're not the only group to do that in the Idol world unlike the west where the big egos often take over.
Yes that was Jungkook with the purple microphone, lead singer of BTS and the youngest member. Each member has their own color microphone and their own earpeices that match. So if you don't like BTS you don't have to check it out. These guys are genuine and cover many topics that are meaningful. I'm a 58 year old ARMY and there are three generations of my family that are ARMY. My husband included. They do so many different genre's, and cover so many different topics, and yes, they have pop music, but they also do hip hop, RnB, and so many other genre's, and their lyricism is on another level.

BTS concerts have every age from kids to Gramma’s, every skin colour, every gender. Their concerts are spectacle. Those lights in the audience are called ARMY bombs and are synced up by wifi in the stadium to display different colours and patterns. Special effects include everything from bubbles to lasers to fireworks to water cannons, fire and confetti. They write and produce their own music AND lyrics. They cannot be pigeon-holed. They do everything from rap, hip hop (their roots) & rock to jazz to pop to Latin and on and on. Plus they started from a nearly bankrupt company and had to fight their way up to where they are. And ARMY has been with them at every step to cheer them on because in addition to their crazy good talent, they are good human beings. Once in a generation group. For real.
