    Tough to shoot smaller handguns, they really need bright front sights, wood grip looks nice but doesn’t help with recoil. Nice looking guns,I’ve never tried either brand. Thanks for sharing.

      I almost made that mistake yesterday. Was looking at a 38 Special Charter Arms, then I asked about the Rossi RP63 - 357 magnum. My son noticed that they were close in price and the ammo was close in price as well and said we can shoot 38 Special and Plus P in the Rossi. Also, the Charter Arms was a 5 shot and the Rossi is a 6 shot.
      Purchased the Rossi, need to wait the mandatory 2 weeks for the permit to pick up my revolver here in Hawaii.

    Thank you, Range Ronin, for your presentation. My observations on my RP63 - overall, very well made, S&W influence noted. I like the three-inch barrel on any revolver. My concerns are - the grips put the knuckle of the third finger right up against the trigger guard and really "smart" when shooting 38+P's. I haven't shot any 357's, and don't intend to. The fixed sights: the rear sight "notch" is woefully too damn narrow. It could have easily been widened at the factory with their machinery. The wide, "target-trigger" has no place on a revolver meant for CCW/EDC and makes defensive shooting drills just that more difficult. and, lastly, on my particular revolver, the front sight is "wobbly" within its mount. I have the cerakote steel model.

    • @RangeRoninChronicles
      @RangeRoninChronicles  10 місяців тому +2

      Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. The RP63 is a well-built revolver, it seems. Like you, I find no pleasure in firing .357 magnum loads through it. As far as sights, these revolvers were never intended for target shooting except at very close range - bad breath distance.

      @@johnlong7504 No problem. Had I had "stickeys" I would have done that, but I had to roll without them. The main intent was not to show accuracy, as both guns are more accurate than I am with them, but to show the differences between the muzzle rise between a ported and non-ported barrel. The difference in muzzle rise is really significant with full load .357 magnum ammunition as well as felt recoil - much softer with the ported barrel, although it's hard to tell.

    I have always been a fan of Rossi revolvers. The ones imported from Interarms during the mid to late 1990's seemed to be of their best quality. Now I'm wanting the RP63 but with Taurus having their fingers in them I've been a little skeptical. Thanks for a great video.

    • @RangeRoninChronicles
      @RangeRoninChronicles  8 місяців тому +1

      Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Don't be too skeptical. The RP63 seems to be a fine revolver. As I stated, and you may have seen in the review, I would be hesitant about firing full-load .357 magnum ammunition in the RP63 - for longevity sake. Now that they are being manufactured in a Taurus facility, I believe that the quality has increased, as the now quality of Taurus firearms seems to have improved.

      Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. Rossi revolvers are returning after somewhat of a hiatus. Now being manufactured under a Taurus license, they might start popping up in retailers. Obviously, Taurus is going to put their line of revolvers first. If Taurus improves their quality, there should be an increase in Rossi's quality, one would think, since they are co-joined at the hip, so to speak.

    A better comparison would be the RP63 and the 605 both being .357Magnum even though the 605 is only a five shot. My 856 Defender three inch does not have a safety lock. Mine came with Hogue grips and the standard small Taurus rubberized grip included. Ameri-Glo front tritium day/night sight with standard front sight included. Yes I do like to stage the trigger from time to time. The problems of shooting .38Spl. in .357Magnums are well documented as long as the shooter knows about them. The .38Spl. lead build up in the chambers of .357Magnums can cause loading problems for the longer .357Mag ammo. So the chambers need cleaning to prevent this. There has also been some talk whether credible or not that .38Spl. can crack weaker forcing cones in some .357Magnums. Although there has been talk of etched .357Mag chambers with .38Spl., I have not heard of it actually happening and it was probably just crud build up. .357Magnum owners just need to be aware of the lead build up in the chambers when shooting .38Spl. and the possibility of weak forcing cone problems.

    • @RangeRoninChronicles
      @RangeRoninChronicles  Рік тому +7

      Thanks for watching and commenting. A comparison between the RP63 and the Taurus 605 is in the mill. It's on the schedule; I just have not yet reached that point yet with other reviews in progress.
      As far as cleaning chambers, I find that most cleaning brushes for the .38/.357 are not thick enough to adequately clean the chambers; they are good for the bore being sized for such, but too small in diameter for the chambers. I use a bore brush for the .40 Smith & Wesson or even a soft nylon bore brush from a .45 ACP to clean the chambers.
      Flame cutting of the chambers can occur, but it takes a lot of .38 Special/.38 Special +P rounds to accomplish that. Lead deposits will build up, making chambering a .357 magnum cartridge difficult, but again, it takes a lot of .38 Special/.38 Special +P rounds to accomplish that.
      I use Wilson Combat Carbon Remover to clean the face of the cylinder, the forcing cone area, and the chambers every time I clean my revolvers, accompanied by judicious scrubbing. I have even polished chambers to get extraction as smooth as possible.

    • @Gieszkanne
      @Gieszkanne 22 дні тому +1

      Why should 38 special fired from a 357 crack forcing cones? That makes no sense and I have never heard oft it. Just that the hot 124gr 357 loads can crack forcing cones.

    • @rbm6184
      @rbm6184 22 дні тому

      @@Gieszkanne If the forcing cone is weak it could since the .38Spl. has more distance to travel in the chamber being a shorter cartridge and the bullet hitting the forcing cone with more built up force. But like I said, just what I heard and may be hearsay. Like I said, whether credible or not. I would be more concerned about chamber etching and crud build up from the .38Spl.

    • @Gieszkanne
      @Gieszkanne 22 дні тому

      @@rbm6184 If this would happen the timing isnt right and 357 then would do much more damage because it has much more pressure. Forcing cone cracks are only from high pressorer/velocity loads like 125gr 357 Mag. Only once I have heard about a .38 special only revolver that has forcing cone cracks from very hot 110gr 38 Special +p+ loads. Build up from 38 Special in a 357 is no problem at all. Just clean your cylinder!

    I’ve been interested in getting a 3” revolver in 357 in order to shoot Buffalo bore 38 sp+p outdoorsman’s rounds for my outdoor adventures. Something a little heavier and robust, but is a 6 shot preferably. I have a 856 2” lite weight and it’s great to carry but sucks to shoot +p in. Not interested in actual 357 though. Also, something that won’t break the bank. I have to answer to my other half. Plus with 38 in a heavier frame I figure maybe she can shoot it too as a home protection gun with lighter rounds. Been debating on a 605 defender but really want that 6th round. Maybe this is the way to go. Thanks!

    None of the Taurus 856 revolvers (one 2" black steel, one 3" Defender stainless/black, one 2" stainless UL, one 2" black UL) I have purchased since Dec 2021 have the safety on the hammer. I did mount the Ameriglo night sights on the 2" revolvers and Galloway Precision spring kits on all four. The Rossi RP63 wasn't available in my area until recently, but I won't shoot .357 Magnum ammo out of anything smaller than a steel S&W K-frame. (One of my lieutenants brought a S&W 340PD to the range at qualification before I retired the last time. I fired 5 rounds of .357 Magnum from it and immediately gave it back to him.) I have been very happy with the Taurus 856 series of revolvers, giving the black steel 2" to my younger daughter and the stainless 2" UL to my grandson.

      Thanks for watching and commenting. The RP63 that I reviewed has been traded-off. While I thought it a fine gun, I really felt it to be more of a .38 Special/.38 Special +P revolver. Since I already have two small revolvers that will handle .357 Magnum (Ruger SP101 and Kimber K6S), I felt no need to have a third hanging around that I would not shoot .357 Magnum out of. The 856 Executive and 856 Defender takes care of .38 Special/.38 Special +P needs just fine.

    The key holing of the Taurus is ridiculous and unacceptable! I would send it back! The warning about the +p is nuts. I am sure that it wont have any problems of standard use of +p. The recoil and blast of the 357 in the Rossi is very impractical.

    • @RangeRoninChronicles
      @RangeRoninChronicles  22 дні тому +1

      Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate both.First of all, you are correct about the felt recoil and muzzle blast of the RP63 being impractical. I found it to be abusive to the hand. Secondly, the issue with +P ammunition in the Taurus is more about liability, and I do agree that with limiting the amount of +P ammunition would increase the life of the gun. When I do carry the 856 Defender, it is loaded with standard pressure 158-grain LSWHP ammunition; it was good back when and is still good now.
      Key-holing can be caused by any number of things. I have not had good results with Armscor ammunition in any firearm, regardless of the barrel length and regardless if the firearm was pistol, revolver, or PCC, with the primary issue being key-holing. I have fired the aforementioned defensive ammunition through the 856 with no key-holing issues. I have also fired Hornady Critical Defense 38 Special +P 110gr JHP with no key-holing issues. The 856 is fine; what I put through it for the evaluation is questionable.

Although chambered for .38 Special and .38 Special +P, the 856 Defender was much milder of the two when shooting +P ammunition. The Rossi RP63 is not as friendly to the hand, especially when shooting .357 Magnum ammunition. I traded in the RP63 for another gun to review; the 856 Defender stayed in the stable.
