I watched their appearance on 'Going Live', about 1987, when this song got re-released. It failed to reach the top 40 on the Gallup TOTP Charts twice, about number 48 in 1986/ 46 in 1987 and made number 40 on the Nescafe 'rival' charts.I was totally drawn to its powerful sound, fantastic song. I always felt gutted when songs' missed out on being big hits when I felt they should've been, and this is one example of many.
What a great sound, Upbeat and energetic. Not new wave but not hard rock either. A sound like this is why I say the 1980s had the best upbeat and quality music ever. Why did I never hear of them? No mass exposure and no top 40 hit for America. This is great music.
Have never understood why this wasnt a bigger hit, its outstanding and have always thought so. Even the motive failed to set the charts on fire, which has always baffled me too. One of the best bands around mid to late 80s, reminded me of a British inxs.
One of the alll time best bands, on their day. Great lyrics, especially in this song. The reference to 'bitterness and breaking point' of the Thatcha era is as relevant as ever, with CaMORON and his army of public-school nest-featherers.
this was the first 12" i bought of TJ and from then on i just bought every album they did, mark shaw was a good looker then and it's great to see they are still going even now, many happy days listening to these guys both then and now
It still sounds brilliant to this day. I suggest there be a 'Nostalgic Look Back' Top 40 Chart. Re-released songs Chart, to remind people today what we were Privileged to hear in our teens, growing up in one of the best music decades ever. It blows today's so-called talent away, (reality TV stars, etc); yes, there are great bands around now, often a lot of them are unsigned. There has been some trashy songs over the decades', in the charts, but the difference today is no Top Of The Pops, and we are saturated nowadays with all this 'instant reality stir in' pop stars, though some, maybe have a great singing voice but there is too much 'manufactured management' behind it.
Only just realised the vhs lines were a stylised part of the original video, and not the result of someone uploading the original from a knackered old tape.
First 21 seconds is awesome art rock. The Cure's Friday I'm in love was already juvenile-sounding geared for a 1990s audience.Singer (and music) has so much upbeat, fast paced energy in his voice.Men like this are a very rare, endangered species at this point. 2:19 and afterwards awesome. Too bad 1980s British artists were hostage to the same political cause though. At least now they support the environment or the homeless or veterans or something other than what became the murder capital of the world
the best voice from the eighties, what a band, could have been huge but spoilt by Mark Shaw not getting on with fellow band members. In his own words "He had his head so far up his own arse". Should have been as big as U2.
u2/simple minds what about Cure? ;) I always wondered whether Robert Smith knows this song as well (TOO well?) ... and knitted his "Friday I'm In Love" (1992) from the INTRO guitar stuff from this song. Compare: even the clean sound is nearly identical.
Fantastic song! Trouble is they tried to make these guys the next big boy band instead of allowing them to gain a following as a credible pop/rock band. I remember accidentally seeing these perform a mini-gig in a market square in Peterborough in '87 and it was very pre-Take That in presentation. Really off-putting tbh but this song was just too bloody awesome to ignore and I went out and bought the 12-inch. Still, girls did used to buy a ton of records and merchandise so maybe you can't blame the band or management for going down this route.
Forgot about this Song? Yeah Very Good Band was Surprised they Weren't as Popular as U2 or Simple Minds or Sumthin? I mean None of em wer as Good Looking as Mark Shaw but Morten really. Still very Different Bands they wer Equally as good.
top band, they should have been huge. why did they split was it just marks big ego ? i have there vhs of hits, there 1st album was ahead of its time, loved marks solo cd to.
Does anyone have the lyrics for this song? I can't find them anywhere. Apparently the song was banned by Radio 1 because of it's anti apartheid slant (not sure why? if it was apartheid then I could understand), so maybe that's why I can't find the lyrics anywhere?
Simple Minds new material was not nearly as good as this by 1987. This kind of music in 2015 is like tremendous trees falling in the forest. Are they heard like they should be? No.

I take an interest in such; throw me some names if you like.
Bought this vinyl from woolworths around 87. Really underrated song.
Privileged to have followed these guys in 1989/1990 and still friends with them to this day, nicest guys ever X
Why were they not more successful and why did they break up?
@@I_Have_The_Most_Japanese_Music they are back

I had never heard of them until like a year ago: TY YT.
one of the best bands ever....very ahead of their time....Pulp, Suede, killers, james, even Cure, and so many others have their sound....
True never realised that but I hear it now
100 years ahead!
I remember Paula Yates introducing this band on the Tube, practically wetting her knickers over the lead singer…..happy days 🤟💕
My favourite Then Jerico song; still sounds fresh and relevant.
I always come back to this song when I've had a drink and it still sounds like brilliant

The were my fave band of this era. Never dull or boring, great tunes.
Best rock pop band of the 1980s, so underrated
They could have been massive. Hints at greatness in this track. What happened?
