Enjoyed the talk, Sean. Steve Freeman still uses the Lasater system of raising replacement heifers. I can appreciate the Lasater principles that shaped the Beefmaster breed as well. Thank you.
Culling a cow that lost its calf from lightning is madness. I watched his video and don't agree with that logic... you'll run out if cows or be forced to keep mediocre heifers if you cull too hard on your cows... If you have predator issues and she can't protect its calf from small predator like jackal then is understandable but things like wolf or leapards the cow has no chance.
I think the logic behind culling a cow that lost her calf to lightning strike is due to he didn't want her to have an unfair advantage over her counterparts. This being the fact that he is creating a breed and wants a level playing field for all. There is also the logic of if the cow doesn't bring in a satisfactory calf whether it be by death or poor performance then the cow then takes the calf's place to put herself up for sale as replacement for the money she came up short on with no calf or below avg calf. Its a business and at the end of the day the cow is there to make you money, if she fails to do so she offers herself up in place. Solid business practice for people doing this for a living.

Good explanation, enjoyed the video
Thanks
Which farm are these from? I’ve been looking for some smaller framed beefmasters in Missouri and they’ve been a bit tough to find.
Give me a call when you get a chance 417 955 2646 I'd like to talk to you.
