  • I hate trying to deburr the little notches between the flanges on the ribs. It's too tight to get in there with most of the normal tools, and putting a gouge or nick in there is exactly what you DON'T want. That would create a stress riser, and that's what we're trying to avoid by deburring in the first place. While there are some good tips and tricks out there already, I think I came up with my new favorite. And it's so simple!

Great idea so I tried it. I made mine with 3 layers of soda box cardboard and instead of the rolled tape, I used a drill bit 3/32” taped to the edge all wrapped in 3 layers of painters tape. Use 320 grit and worked great. Thanks for the great tip! Really enjoying your build.

Great idea! I was just thinking last night about other things I could use. I was trying to duplicate the process of rolling up the tape and finding it more difficult to get a small enough “tube” that I had the first time for some reason. Drill bit wrapped in some tape sounds like a great option. Thanks!

There are good tools available to do this, but you won't find these by watching people like "plane lady" or shopping at Harbor Freight. Go to a real machine shop supply store and buy some Gessiwen Riffler files. They are made in very many shapes and forms for filing small areas. They are Swiss made and expensive but the last forever. There are Asian knock-offs but they are junk.
While you are at the tool supply store look at the Cratex abrasive line. They are ready made bobbins that are not very expensive when bought by the box. Get a Cratex mandril to mount them on. The supply store guys will explain all of this to you. When you use the Cratex in your air tool, you cannot run it full speed, as it will vibrate and break the tip off of the Cratex .

Thanks, I’ll take a look. I’ve been meaning to buy some decent tiny files, and I don’t mind spending more for quality tools.

The best method I found while building my RV-14A was to get a roll of 2” cloth backed 220 grit sandpaper. Take a piece about 6” long and rip it in half lengthwise. Now place the 1” strip over the burr and putting light pressure on the back of the strip against the burr with your thumb, pull it strip through. It will usually remove the burr in one pass. With use, the 220 grit becomes more like 400 grit and becomes very flexible. It will then conform to any shape of the flange including the tight areas discussed in the video. This method is very fast and does a great job. Use a quality shop roll, I got mine from Klingspor online and it will hold up indefinitely.

Nice, I like it! I've been doing a lot more deburring with sandpaper lately.

Hey that seems like a quick way and definitely a cheap way to get in there. Would you mind making a quick video tutorial on how exactly you crafted that little device, perhaps with close ups? Thank you

Sure, I’ll see what I can do. It’s really just as simple as rolling up a piece of thick tape into a thinly little tube.

Here’s what i’ve been using. Take a 1 inch wide role of emery cloth from harbor freight. Cut a length of about 10 inches. Then grab the cloth at the tip and with your other hand tear a small slice about 1/16 to 1/8 ( real easy to tear) and use it like dental floss around cut outs etc. i have 2 or 3 grit sizes but always finish with very fine. Works great.I used this method basically on the all flanges on the the airplane.

I like it! What grits do you typically use?

@@missiletwentynine2667 I use 240 and 120 grit. I said emery but what I meant was aluminum oxide. Can not find 1" roll at Harbor Freight anymore so I ordered from Amazon: 240 grit VSM-332652 $13.82. Shears easy and does an excellent job. Better than files. I've been using for many years

VSM 332652 is 1" x 50 yards by the way

Excellent, thanks! I’m past most of the deburring on the HS (thankfully) at this point, but I’ll order some before I get started on the elevators. I also managed to find some 400 grit that’s Aluminum Oxide at the my neighborhood HD for finer work.
