  • Following the arrival of the two keel trees we have been taking lots of photographs that will be fed into some photogrammetry software so that we have a 3D graphic image to add to our records.
We will use this technique at every stage to record materials being used and the different components made.
We have been practicing this technique in our volunteer Recording Team and so far have a brilliant R2D2 3D model! Practicing on smaller desktop items means that you need a lot less photographs to complete the processing.
This is something that anyone can try at home. The software we are using is called Agisoft (there are many others) and has a free 30 day trial.
In this video you can hear Jacq, our Project Manager, interviewing Andy, a volunteer crew member about the Photogrammetry process.
To help fund the project, please consider sponsoring a section of the ship so that you can be part of the ongoing legacy of the Sutton Hoo Ship
Visit our website saxonship.org to sign up to the newsletter and find out more about the project.

Mmmmm how on earth did those “primitive” Anglo Saxons manage to build such a massive vessel without all this modern tech? 😉😂👍

Hi Robert, they were incredibly clever and would have been immersed in boatbuilding from a young age. You only need to look at the detail of the buckle that was to know how talented they were.

@@StephenMortimer Sorry Stephen the 'mush in the mouth' is me! and we are learning as we go along. I will look into what we can do (obviously we will now hold the phone in landscape in future) but we don't have big budgets to play with so we are doing the best we can with what we have. The alternative is that we can't share anything which would be a great shame. Do you have any suggestions about how to get better audio with amateur equipment? thanks Jacq
