Fingerpicking on the guitar sounds (and looks) harder than it is. If you're willing to take a few minutes to get each component, putting it all together takes very little time. You can do it!
This is the two-finger Travis Pick, based on the style of legendary guitar player/singer/songwriter Merle Travis (1917--1983). I believe Travis usually used 2 fingers, but it is easy (and fun) to add another finger (or two).
I have a similar tutorial for another fingerpicking pattern here:
• Enjoy This Meditative ...
0:00 Intro
0:22 Left hand
0:1:15 Step 1--Thumb
0:3:45 Step 2--Index Finger G String
0:5:51 Step 3--Index Finger B String
0:10:12 Bonus--Double G's
OMG, where have you been all my life? I have learnt so much in such a short time. I'm 71 years old and now I may be able to play the Guitar, Cheers my friend. Stuart from the UK.
Same here!! 😊
Same here, i am 73 and now very happy with that lesson. 🤗Thank you so much. Greets from Germany
I agree this guy is amazing❤
OMG he da man 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Same here, I am 79
Excellent, finally a UA-cam guitar guru with the patients required to demonstrate at a rate that guitar learners need to see and emulate. You sir are a valuable resource. I didn't realize how helpful your video was until I came back to it and followed you carefully. THANK YOU
thank you for your comment and you are very welcome
Yes Golden Music Teacher Indeed!!!!!
@@BLazLessons hi. I'm Janine. I believe you can teach me. Do u teach
@@BLazLessons wowzzzzza. So is there a way you can teach me the last part of your video. How I can learn where to find the root 🌹
Thanks
Janine
Please make more videos. You have a talent for teaching. This was so relaxing. If you did a whole series of meditative finger-picking exercises, I'd watch them all.
Ok I'll make more meditative ones. People aren't really feeling the covers and I don't really want to make them anyway. Did you check the 2nd meditative one?
Thank you for taking time with us. I'm 75 years old and enjoyed your instruction. Please keep this no rush approach.
Glad you liked it, and I will.
Me too 🎉
@@colleensmith6655ur 75 yrs too?😮
@@mailord7901 I am also 75 and this was an excellent video.

I watch so many tutorials and usually there’s too much/not enough of certain key elements; excruciatingly long intro; uncomfortable pace, etc., etc. Not this one! It’s just…perfect. I REALLY appreciate your teaching style. You make learning fun and easy. Very relaxing and engaging personality. I “Liked” and subscribed immediately. I’ll be back for more. Thank you so much!
That really makes me happy to hear, thank you!
Ditto
Awesome
Usually tutorials are too fast and not easy to see which strings they are playing and I just give up! This is just ace, thank you so much! Kathie
Me too! 😃
I've been trying to learn fingerpicking online for 10 months but this is the first video that made sense to me
That make me so happy.
I’m 71, frustrated fingerpicker stuck on one pattern. This is huge! Watched some of your scales videos and it all clicked. Other folks just make my eyes glaze over! You’re not in a studio showing off with your fancy equipment. You just give. We need you, man!
thank you, that is encouraging, I will give you more!
Really was great. Thank you.
Thank you..this is the speed and the amount of info i am capable of following in my beginner status
Great that's what I was shooting for.
For 30+ years I've never gotten figer style down.
I mainly play metal and always admired finger style, but could never get my fingers to coordinate
In the short time of this video I made more progress than I have in 30 years...
I will obviously keep coming back every day to this until it is 2nd nature, but I'm so impressed and happy right now
This makes me very happy to know.
You, sir, are a Godsend! Teacher Extraordinare!!!!!
A Non-guitarist/Percussion Dreamer's Gift!
I'm a non-percussionist guitarist dreamer!
I usually don't ever leave comments, but I felt like I really had to show my appreciation for this video! learning guitar has been really frustrating for me. oftentimes the videos I watch go too fast or don't explain things well enough, however this wasn't the case for me in this video! I really enjoy your teaching style and I feel like this was really beginner friendly as well. I believe this could be a good exercise as well just to practice picking. this taught me alot and was very soothing and relaxing, I subscribed and will be watching more videos!
Best finger picking lesson I've seen on UA-cam.. subscribed 👍🏼
Thanks
I'm so glad you got something from it and I appreciate your support! More to come.
It's a Friday night, here as I write , and you are so correct that this is easy. But what I find hard is remembering the melody when I am working on other pieces of music. Nonetheless, I am determined to burn it into my brain. Thanks for the lesson.
When you say the melody , do you mean the picking pattern?
why do Americans say 'you are so correct' and not 'you are so right'? Correct is when you get a question right and a tick.
Even though I’ve been a picker for a while I still found this approach interesting. A great introduction.
Glad to hear it
Thank you for such an enlightening, encouraging and informative finger picking lesson. I admit that it took a couple of day’s trying to get my 70 y/o brain to coordinate with my right hand, but after more than a few rewinds of your patient video I am extremely pleased with my progress. I will admit that my left hand fingertips are suffering, but I couldn’t be happier.
It’s the suggestion of “relaxing” for ME. You make me WANT to practice it. I just want to sit & relax & practice this two finger picking pattern. The power of suggestion is magic. Excellent lesson. Thank you so much!❤️❤️❤️😁
Thank you from the bottom of my heart! I’m just starting to learn guitar at 62 yo and this gave me so much confidence and joy. This is a truly excellent, and relaxing, tutorial.
I'm 66 years old and I've been playing the guitar for 50 years. The finger picking I do uses thumb an forefinger, I don't even remember where I learned it. What you're showing is the next logical step for me. but i'll want more, i hope you'll teach a few songs using this method.
Thank you ! This is really great and I have not yet used my guitar . Was just looking checking it out ! I will definately come back ! No blah blah blah ! You go straight to the point ! Thank you !🎸
Yeah do it with the guitar!
I have just started practicing my ever first guitar at the age of 62 which I bought about two weeks ago. Watching your channel and your method of teaching I appreciated very much. It never to late to learn an instrument, in order your mind and soul alive. I am having fun by your tutorial method. Many thanks.
Awesome, more soon
I accidentally found your channel and I'm so grateful that I did. I'm on my way to plat the Travis pick. Thank you so much ❤ from Australia 🇦🇺

I've been learning to play guitar for a year and a half. Getting lessons from UA-cam. I have to say, this video is the best I seen. Your very clear, you make it simple. I got it. Thank you.
Merry Christmas 2023
Yeah watched this lesson a few times now, got the pattern memorized, just consistently playing this to teach my fingers. Great teaching style by the way - Thank You!
You are very welcome and thank you for letting me know
Love how you took it real slow and calmly. Lots of times lessons are stressful but your method helped me understand it with low pressure and just feeling for it. Thanks!
I was so relaxed in ur training , I didn't even hear the honking..normally I hear every breath. Thank you!!!
Wow finally someone I can relate to thank you I actually learned something
You are welcome and hopefully I can make some more good ones
Absolutely brilliant! You have a very addictive teaching style! Thank you!
Yesssssssss
Thank you for sharing and taking the time to get down to our level ...
You're welcome but I don't see any level as being below me, music can be deep or shallow at any level, so it was good for me as well to slow down
Very good lesson. This is the way my guitar teacher taught me. Thanks I've been looking for a good lesson. I needed to relearn. Forgot it was so many years ago.
Thanks I'm glad you're back on your guitar, keep playing.
Thank you thank you! Dropped all social media and picked up instruments and books! You are very soothing to watch ❤️❤️

Thank you so much for this tutorial! 75 years young learning to play. Your ability to break it down into manageable sections is brilliant! Thank you for posting. Linda from the US.
You're the most patient teacher out there! Keep at it!
Thank you for that! I will try to keep them coming
Thank you for taking the time to teach us.
You are so welcome, I enjoy it
I love the way you focus on unconscious muscle memory and musicality at the start. Without that, the other elements fall away.
Love it. ❤
This is very true.
I never learned to finger pick, and your lesson made this look possible.😊. thank you. I will give it a try!
Likewise, I’ve been tutored out until you !!! Your time and effort is appreciated. I really get it. Finally!!. Thank you so very much. I have saved this video for re running to practice. Cheers.

“Just chill, you CAN stay here. This is a third of the thing. I’d say half or more…” lol😂THE best and so true, what an amazing perspective and personality

Best Travis lesson. First lesson that really worked for me
I'm very glad
such a good teacher. please make more of these
Thank you and I sure will
This is a great instructional video 👍. I’ve watched so many that I couldn’t learn. This is perfect. I’m hoping I can get my picking hand to cooperate consistently. It will take some time but that’s ok. I’m a Buddhist and I totally get the Zen 🎋📿☯️. 👍☮️🌞🎸🎵
You got it, it will come, I have no doubt
I cant wait to start playing this. Thank you!!!
Duuuuude! 🙏 Thank you most sincerely. You are SO patient to spend this much time with this-for people like us. I’ve been a stummer for 40 years. I could never get a proper handle on finger-picking. I will by the end of the weekend.
you got it!
Brilliant! Really good job on sharing that little rift with us. I’ve just picked up the guitar after a 20 year hiatus and I think I’ve found the perfect entry point. Thanks again.
My buddy, I’m only on min 1 and have already subscribed! You’re calm, calculated and encouraged inspirational way about passing on knowledge is something very unique. I’m looking forward to see what you are offering here cuz I feel I’ve hit a gold mine with finding ya! Thx and one love for all
Fantastic video! Thanks so much for breaking it down and making it easy to understand.🙂

How have you only got 11k subscribers, this is easily the best tutorial I’ve seen on fingerpicking! I mean two fingers even my little brain can manage that…
thank you, I'm actually shocked I have so many subscribers, but I have come to terms with it and I'm ready to lean into it
Exactly what i was looking for! This is a real teacher. Thankyou so much!❤

Very patient & encouraging teacher!
Awesome! Just stumbled upon this and subscribed within 5 minutes. Perfect teaching pace. Meditative is right. 😊👌🏻
Thank you my friend! Glad to have you.
I much prefer these ‘follow along in real time’-style lessons as I rediscover guitar after a looooong break. Thank you!
That's good news to me because I also think it is the best way
I have looked at many you tubes and your are far the best! I finally got! You make it so simple, easy, relaxing, and fun! You are awesome! Thank you, thank you!
Wow, thank you!
Thank you so much for this. I've been trying to finger pick for a long time and this is the easiest lesson I've seen. I was actually able to do this by the end of the tutorial! Of course, my fingers are aching, but that's another story and I'm still trying to figure out what I can do to make my fingertips ache less.
Vielen Dank für die guten und ruhigen Erklärungen. Ich habe gelernt!
Huge thanks for this. LOVE fingerpicking! Superb teaching … and playing (of course!).

Yes my friend I will do it! And thank you.

Power cord riffer from the 80's. Starting to learn again after a 25 year break. Always loved good fingerstyle plaing. Awesome introduction to this style. thank you so much. Some james Taylor style playing would be great as well

Thank you !! I’m also 71 and you’ve simplified it perfectly! Really easy to do with your help!!
Thanks I am a beginner, playing for 3 weeks! followed along with the whole video, thank you it was great :)

Looks I found myself a new teacher! Love this lesson! Thank you!🙏🏻

Just found your channel and subbed. Beginning to learn this but slowly. Thanks for the tuition 👍

Just beautiful way of explaining I love the pace
Thanks for a great tutorial. Very approachable style and easy to follow. This is the first lesson I sat down and practiced. It's tough at first but once you can make your fingers work with your brain it starts sounding amazing.
Glad it was helpful!
