Silesians were shipped to Germany (and some killed) in 1945-1946. Today Silesia do not have strong identity, one is either Moravian or Polish. Plus the numbers are small.
Hey my wife is from Brno and says she is pretty sure vrabec (Moravian sparrow) is named that way because the pieces of the pork are as big as the bird, or at least they should be.
Yes, and also the cutting of meat which were actually the rest from more important parts of meat, looks like a sparrow ruffling its feathers. Sparrows were very common in the countryside.
Hi Jen, a great vlog of self-reflection! One thing you probably got about Czechs by now is that any mistake, no matter how small, will be identified, mercilessly scrutinized, and corrected on the spot! May be due to the education system. The fact that on occasion there may be several conflicting corrections will be graciously overlooked. Alternative facts anyone?
True, another problem of the czech education. We deeply focus on the history, almost not learning past 100 years in school (and also just in the lasts years of high schools), just a little bit of information about what we should be aware of and learning from. But we know exactly what happened in 1415, why that king in middle ages killed his brother and took his wife and how many antic philosophers you would need to change a light bulb. Super important! 😁
@@ondrejandydlohos "how many antic philosophers you should need to change a lightbulb" :D But it's true that the more recent history often gets a very quick runthrough at the end of the school year... When I was attending the special history class for my maturita in history, our teacher specifically decided to focus on the 20th century history of "the Third World" the whole year (aside from preparation for the maturita questions) because that's something you _never_ have time for in regular lessons, yet it influenced 20th (and 21st) century history a lot. It has been, indeed, priceless for understanding a lot of things... ... but I feel that's actually a gap in the education we share with the US. :-)
@@beth12svist Would you believe me that I totally forgot I wrote this joke? I've just read it now and had a proper laught 😁 Yeah I can imagine. We should know something about the history, for sure. But the amount of information we are getting of very past ages are enormous and last century is just "meh". I also chose a "Second half of the 20th century" as a special subject in my 4th grade on highschool just because I was curious. It's really weird that schools put this so much aside. Also in other countries. And then you are asking yourself why so many people for example vote for Communist party. But it also might be residuum of communist approach to teaching. They didn't want us to know, what happened in last ten years and before. And thus this whole process might evolve even deeper and more crazy. This is just my idea, what could happen, I am not sure that it happened exactly like this, but I can imagine it.

Jen, your channel conveys amazing positivity, unique sense of humor, and clearly displays a very distinct storytelling knack on top of all the hard work you put in. In case this video was motivated by your feeling attacked out of proportion by some commenters (not saying it was), please thicken your skin and keep the great content coming. Yes, we Czechs can be judgmental. Old news. And maybe that's why we need ambassadors like you whether or not most of us realize it. You are the inviting hand reaching across the aisle and your courage is and will be appreciated. Please never spend a minute doubting that. (BTW pretty sure Janek meant no malice)

Ad imperial vs metric system - it reminds me one explanation from "Good Omens" book: Two farthings = One Ha'penny. Two ha'pennies = One Penny. Three pennies = A Thrupenny Bit. Two Thrupences = A Sixpence. Two Sixpences = One Shilling, or Bob. Two Bob = A Florin. One Florin and one Sixpence = Half a Crown. Four Half Crowns = Ten Bob Note. Two Ten Bob Notes = One Pound (or 240 pennies). One Pound and One Shilling = One Guinea. The British resisted decimalized currency for a long time because they thought it was too complicated."
If you really thought about it, you might understand why the decimal system is not Jesus. The imperial system divides the pound into 240 bits which is great for further division by 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, ... etc. 100 can only be divided by 2, 4, 5, 10, 20, 25, 50. Dont think decimal is king just because you were born into it.
@@Likexner So do you prefer to multiply and divide numbers by lets say by 6 or 8 and do you expect to do that without calculator? Much easier to do that by 10.
@@Likexner that system may come from sumerian counting system. They used system with base 60. Our counting of angles is a remainder thereof. It was taken over by arabs, who also took over indian decimal system, got them all mixed with their own system(s) and when they invaded europe, they brought it all with them. What counting base is used in which sphere was heavily influenced mainly by who developed the mathematical field. Angle theory was developed mainly by the Arabs, taken over by the sumers, so that is why we use 60 base. Math fields which were developed in Greece prefered to use 10 base system, so that is why it is prevalent in arithmetics. For the greeks, 10 was considered a perfect number, mainly because of pythagorean school, and they even ascribed magical powers to it. The history of counting systems is pretty fascinating.
@@martinajurickova5750 Yes, it is fascinating. I just had to react because i dont like the smugness of decimal supremacists who know very little about the subject and think that the system they were born into is the best because... because.
Hi Jen, wouldn't you like to make a video of what you think about Czech fairy tales? I'll write the best ones here♥️ Tři oříšky pro Popelku Lotrando a Zubejda Korunní princ Anděl Páně Dvanáct měsíčků Maharal
Oooh, I suggested this idea just this past Christmas....specifically, with what's probably THE most famous Czech movie fairy tale, 3 Hazelnuts for Cinderella....this video has very decent English subtitles:m.ua-cam.com/video/dIFCIArJrCc/v-deo.html
Tři oříšky pro Popelku is also quite famous in other countries, especially in Germany and Norway. There's an exposition dedicated to this movie in Moritzburg Castle in Germany. In Norway, 20% of viewers tune in every year to watch movie during Christmas.
@@DreamPrague "Dvanáct měsíčků" is the only fairytale, that has origin solely in Czechia (Bohemia probably), it comes at least from the middleages. Cant find the source for that, but other fairytales are either made up in a recent history (so not traditional) or are part of greater story universum originating elswhere (Cinderella, Little Red Hood etc.).
In our school we are friends with our teachers, but we belive everything they says. (Unless the class nerd knows better.) I think the enviroment at schools change since our parents were there. Now its pretty normal to ask teacher how are they today (very personal question in Czechia) and just have a talk about their and our lives at the high school.
Oh god, I'm so glad you're a good sport. Sometimes when I read (or even type, lol) the comments below your videos, I feel like you must be getting really tired of everybody always nitpicking on every single word.
Well, I think there always was a "cold war" between Bohemia and Moravia. Both sides hate something about the other side and spear rumors (and most of the rumors or jokes are on Moravia, so they mostly just defend themself) about that, etc. But nowadays I think it's a little bit cool down, cause now Moravia is fighting with Prague, and sometimes Bohemia helps them with that. The world mostly sees only Prague, not the whole Czech republic, and they believe that they visit Prague they will know Czech culture, etc. Because of that Bohemia is starting to disappear under the light of Prague and I believe that they don't like it too. I also hear an opinion that Prague is the Czech Republic, also one politician said that in Brno... I'm surprised that he is still alive too.
Moravians hates on Czechs and Czechs are making fun of Moravians because of that. Everyone hate Prague, so Prague people makes fun of them. Thats how it really is :)

Same here. Never heard, never tasted smaženka so thought about it like chlebíček. :-O But it resembles me coated bread in an egg (obalovaný chleba ve vajíčku).
Well, it is great, when people can learn from their own mistakes. Though I prefer to learn from the mistakes of others, gives me time to get creative and invent my own mistakes.
Smaženka is usually piece of bread covered in eggs and then fried but some people do it with an omelet, it's just not as good (trust me!). Spread over ketchup or mustard (I prefer ketchup, actually), whatever you fancy, shredded cheese, add raw onion, pickles and if you're fancy other toppings that'd normally go on regular chlebíček, bell pepper, tomato,

V praze i Vídni máte nádherný Lichtenštejnský palác. Téměř celý průmysl České republiky je z kapitálu Lichtenštějnů, kteří jej vytvářeli těch 700 let těžením zlata a dalších rud, později průmyslem.

and there´s more - about smaženka, the important thing is that the slice of bread is being soaked in beaten eggs and fried to gold.. you indeed have the choice not to soak the bread and just lay down the egg omelette onto the mustard side of the bread but majority prefers the soaked variant cuz this makes the break moist ans silky..
Olomoucke tvaruzky (stinky cheese) is actually from the small Moravian town of Lostice. My brother-in-law lives right near there and brings us some often when he visits.
Hi from Olomouc. There is one more interesting building in Olomouc close to the city center - A conservatory with tropical plants. It is not as big as the one in DC but it might be interesting (currently closed :-( ). And I recommend having a beer, or two, in the park at the fountain. Thanks for your great and funny videos. I really appreciate your remarkable knowledge of Czech history, politics, etc.
Hi Jen, if you come to Olomouc, I'd recommend a walk around the historic city centre. There are still buildings dating back to when Olomouc was the Moravian capital. For example, I was told that a part of our majestic kostel sv. Mořice that still stands today has been built in the 14th century! One of the most important buldings in Olomouc, katedrála sv. Václava, was consecrated already in 1131, although the building has been rebuilt a couple of times since then, so its current shape is from later centuries. One of the reasons that our city centre is so preserved is that up until the end of the 19th century, there was a massive fortified wall around the whole city, so there could have been no "modern" development inside the walls. Only when they tore down the wall, the city started expanding and shaping towards its present-day look. But parts of the historical city center remained as they were to remind us of the olden times. Just wait for the lockdowns to end, because, as someone has already mentioned, you absolutely have to visit Black Stuff, Long Story Short, or Masné krámy. :)

@@ondrejandydlohos "how many antic philosophers you should need to change a lightbulb" :D
But it's true that the more recent history often gets a very quick runthrough at the end of the school year...
I've just read it now and had a proper laught 😁
Yeah I can imagine.
I'd absolutely love to see your Schwartzenbergs video

The British resisted decimalized currency for a long time because they thought it was too complicated."
that's hilarious!

V praze i Vídni máte nádherný Lichtenštejnský palác. Téměř celý průmysl České republiky je z kapitálu Lichtenštějnů, kteří jej vytvářeli těch 700 let těžením zlata a dalších rud, později průmyslem.

Those are few tips for your trip. Love you content :)
and there´s more - about smaženka, the important thing is that the slice of bread is being soaked in beaten eggs and fried to gold.. you indeed have the choice not to soak the bread and just lay down the egg omelette onto the mustard side of the bread but majority prefers the soaked variant cuz this makes the break moist ans silky..
I was born in Praha in 1956 and arrived in Australia early 1970 (after the problems in 1968). Já
už nemluvím česky but I enjoy your channel
Boží jako dycky. And cute Tobik behind you!
